Best knife I own is a Kitchen Devil which I bought from ASDA, 40 years ago. Stainless, slim blade, full-tang ... keeps a great edge ... and it was a great price. Also good in the kitchen! End-of-the-day, a knife is just a bit of sharpened steel, with a handle attached.

I have 2 knives, an ESSEE 6 which is an absolutely fantastic do anything knife, And the Hultafors OK4, I can't remember the last time i took my ESSEE out on a camp. For £20 quid you can't beat the Hultafors.
Just got one of the EDC pouches. An excellent piece of kit, loaded with an Olight 3T OES, Victorinox huntsman with orange paracord and a 2explore ferro rod with a glow in the dark handle. I love it. Thanks Neil.
I've owned a Hultafors HD for around 6 years. Excellent value. Stays sharp, easy to sharpen, stands up to the usual bushcraft abuse. Similar to your orange one but slightly thicker blade.
we had the us pilot ones that guys would buy in the US Army in the 80s, then we got issued the M9, and it was actually quite a solid knife, very well built , and mine suffered a good deal of use and abuse in the field , luckily we did not have to buy it ( and i put that blade through h$ll, many people have said they dont hold up, Ihad seen guys break them, mine never broke
If you haven’t, you should try out the BPS B1. Mine is carbon, but I believe it’s offered in stainless as well. The spine wasn’t as sharp as other BPS knives I have, but not hard to fix that. It’s become one of my most carried even though I have much more expensive knives.
Hultafors , found it, they run about $16 in the USa, quite reasonable, Hennie the one you mentioned he does ship to USA also ( its about 10 quid to ship to,the states )
I've a well battered, hand forged carbon steel "bushcraft" knife that I bought nearly 20 years ago for £30. It's still going strong and good for bigger tasks. Once a year, I soak it in the hot oil of a deep fryer. My go-to knives are my Mora Clipper or Companion. I've had them so long I can't remember which is which. They're well used and definitely not in a drawer. For food prep out in the cuds, I use an Opinel.
Good choices. You can't go wrong with a Mora. Like everything else, we will inevitably upgrade. I upgraded to the Mora Bushcraft models. Longer and thicker blades with a wonderfully thicker and grippier handle. Most importantly, it has a finger guard. There's two sheaths available and the one comes with a diamond sharpener and a Ferro rod. When you want a custom knife, check out Kyle Noseworthy from Newfoundland, Canada. He's a knife maker with his own TH-cam channel and website. This guy is amazing.

Some great books there Neil. I have a few knives. I have a couple of Mora's. I went for full tang, originally a stronger kitchen knife with a good edge and a good penknife. My MOD knife is the goto. I have my eye on a knife by Sandy Jacklore. I have very sharp butchery knives from a former career in abattoir and kitchen.
Out of my quite large collection of knives from less expensive to higher end the mora carbon garberg and eldris are my most carried and used knives I have.
I've bought cheap and I have purchased expensive knives. One of my favorites is a $10.00 knife which is the UKC R 53 B or Unknown Knife Company R=Recycled 1953 Buick, very sharp, holds a good edge, cheap garbage leather sheath. You're correct that the postage cost almost more than the knife. But it's a good knife and I always carry my genuine MacGiver knife. So Yes some of the cheapest knives are the best. And still working on my survival necklace. Cool video.
Nice video Neil .I bought my mora companion (stainless steel) in 2017 and still use it to this day and it has served me well so I highly recommend for first knife cheap but a quality knife . This year I’ve upgraded to a MK2 by Rob Evans and I absolutely love it.
That OK4 is a real winner...I been running it for about 4 years and I find I've come to appreciate it's quality more and more every year, my choice for long trips in the bush where a knife failure would be a bloody disaster.. If you have an axe with you the Mora Classic one is also a lovely knife. I would also put the Mora 2000 in any list about good, cheap knives for outdoors use. A good preforming steel (12c27), a near perfect rubberised handle, the best sheath Mora ever make and it's cheaper than the identical Mora Kansbol. it's Sweden's favourite outdoor knife by a Swedish mile (ten kilometers) and for good reason.
Regarding the knife from Poland, I too, would prefer a scandi edge. I'd buy one without hesitation, as I like the blade profile, just not crazy about the saber grind it currently has. Scandi is what I'm after.
I have an Eldris as a part of my basic fire starting kit. The other Mora’s I have are the companion and the 546 stainless. Al of them together weigh very little. I have several Opinel’s, two of them are the #12 saw and knife. Again, both weigh very little but are very useful. By the way, I don’t mind the plastic sheaths on the Mora’s, there are others who prefer other styles of sheaths.
Have the BSH5 Shadow from Beavercraft, as you said the sheath leather is a bit on the thin side, retention isnt good out of the box, but easy to re wet form for a better fit. Still hard to go past a basic Mora as an all round knife
Thanks for this post I'm just getting into bushcraft and prepping. have the orange handled Hultifor. I also have 2 Hultifor Heavy Duty knives. I also have Cold Steel SR1 lite for heavier duty activities. Swiss knives: Outrider, Forester and Ranger 59. I feel very lucky to be able to afford these knifes, I doubt that I will be buying any more.
Absolutely love my 511s like mors I to cut the guard off great great little knife even at the new prices still good but much prefer the older style handle.
A friend gave me a professional Divers knife that worked very well for Bushcraft in the UK. 'Worked' because a six inch blade might be problematic nowadays.
Hi Neil great video definitely food for thought on the knives. Currently I have an old early 80s version of a Norwegian knife with a full tang but stacked leather handle similar the blade is similar in shape to a Bowie style knife. This was given to me by my stepdad when I joined the army he got it when he was on exercise in Norway. Not a bad knife but totally showing it’s age. Just as a thought would you consider doing a comparison for a Victorinox saw and an Opinel saw. I currently use a Swiss soldier knife as a kind of bushcraft/slightly larger EDC pocket knife. The saw on it is superb but I have considered looking at an Opinel. Best wishes

They really shouldn't define who we are by way of their cost, their brand, their cult following etc etc , From my 60 years of being exposed to Australian Bushcraft :- If you can't afford to break it or lose it and then "lose it" you can't afford it!
I have never advocated the try stick, it has absolutely no bearing on the knife and more on the skill of the user. I've owned Mora's since before they were Mora's, I've still got a K.J Eriksson 511 somewhere. The 511 without the finger guard is called the 510 I believe, people were just converting them because of the lack of 510's available. I sold off all what I would call investment knives, at a profit. My go to now is the Casstrom Lars Falt and the Lofty Wiseman B model, recently purchased the No10 Casstrom in stainless for food prep. Condor make some very nice budget friendly knives, the Terrasaur is a cracking knife. I have a knife test format that I have used for years, simple tasks that are easy enough for most blades though there are those that have failed.

Same here. I've a couple of veg knives from Kitchen Devil, (I think they're a Japanese company) that I bought in 1980ish.
I disagree, I doubt you’ll survive in the woods with a kitchen knife.

For Budget Morakniv and Condor are the best hands down. Many more out there but those to me have a great track record.
