One of Orochimaru's main character traits is his narcissism. There's also the fact that Orochimaru's immortality method provides him with Kekkei Genkai. Hidan's method would not do that. Development means that a character's about to become very important for some reason, and death is one common reason. Being a villain is another.
dang thats like 13 years, bro time flies by so quickly. I discovered naruto in 2020 so i won't be remebering naruto weekly but I hope that when I'm older I remember how hyped I was for the boruto episodes as I was for naruto

I always found it amusing how quick they just accepted that HIdan is immortal. Not even considering if this maybe is some sort of secret jutsu or Kekkai Genkai and he´s just bluffing etc. At least you should never trust what an enemy is telling you but yeah, Hidans performance there was just too convincing I guess. On a sidenote I love to see that Shikamaru is refering to Asume here only as "Asuma" and not "Asuma-sensei" anymore, since they see each other as equals now. Other Ninja-teams never lost that "sensei"- suffix (though at that time of the story most of them are still Chuunin and not Jonin like their teachers, so that may be a big reason to not drop the honorific as well).

These S ranks have a nickname like Sasori of the Red Sand, Kakashi the Copy Ninja etc. Akatsuki are levels above standard shinobis, Average Jonins, Chunins and Konoha 11 Shinobis, Naruto and others wont stand a chance. Akatsuki level is maybe equal to "Sannins" or below "5 Kage" level. Intel gathering's crucial too, Gaara is a kage but got beaten by Deidara, Asuma is a Top Notch shinobi yet got beaten by Hidan, Shikamaru beats Hidan but he had an intel already. If Asuma and Gaara fought Hidan and Deidara with intel they couldve beaten them.
They meet in Creation of the Akatsuki, but that’s a game. Spoilers ahead, In the Itachi episodes in 456-458 or something along those lines, we see the Akatsuki gathering members like Itachi’s former partner Juzo, one of the 3 Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist who survived Might Dai going 8 gates. And Orochimaru left before they recruited Hidan. Also we see Kakuzu killing his former partner before Hidan, which was pretty funny.

Now that Hidan is only a head he cant do rituals anymore, he cant draw his circle as a head because he need limbs to draw it, he cant hurt himself by being just a head, and Kakuzu's dead so no one is gonna repair him, so yes he died.

Kishi said he "will eventually die of starvation", it's unclear how long will that take but definitely longer than a few months. So even now his status is still listed as unknown

These was around ever since to discussions and reddits and when the anime is still going on. Dying to starvation causes your whole body and organs to malfunction so of course its as painful as a physical harm, But the thing is he doesnt have a body anymore. Assuming he still needs to eat as a head will still keep him from dying/being Dead since Kishi is the one who said it.
