AFOs, or Ankle Foot Orthotics, are used by millions of people for added stability and strength. AFOs are used by patients of all ages from infants to the elderly to treat a wide variety of conditions. At Northwest Orthotics & Prosthetics in Provo, Utah we make custom AFOs from start to finish in our onsite fabrication lab. Here's a peak behind the scenes at the process.

Seriously, as a former fabricator who has retired, is anyone using scanning 3D digitizers to get the patient mold instead of casting?

We do have 3D digital scanning tech in our office, and we use it in some situations. It can be just as effective and is quicker in certain scenarios, but many of our practitioners feel that a digital scan is just no replacement for the precise manual adjustments they can make during and after an old school plaster casting process.

Afos are custom built in person by an orthotist. Please search for a provider in your area. You can also try a non-customized style from Allard USA.
