On November 20, 1968, Consolidated Coal Company's Number 9 Mine in Farmington, WV exploded, resulting in the deaths of 78 miners. The disaster led to mine safety reforms; President Nixon signed the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 on December 30, 1969. I remember that vividly. My mother was a nurse and helped the victims and family members. Very sad day in 1968. 😢
