For a), I took a more complicated approach that involved using logarithms and I also ended up getting x = 5/2 (or x = 2.5).

How can I calculate this:
2 to the power of 5x - 1 = 1/8 to the power of x(x - 1)

RHS will be 1/2^3 which gives 2^-3
Then LHS is 2^(5x-1)as you said. So we can equate exponents since bases are equal... So 5x - 1 =-3
5x =-2 and so x=-2/5 or - 0.4

Subtract 1 from both sides of the equation
5x + 1 (- 1) = 625 - 1
5x = 624
Divide 5 by both sides of the equation to make x subject of the formula
5X ÷ 5 = 624 ÷ 5
X = 124.8
