When you started riding I was like “hmm that place looks familiar” then later on in the video I realized holy shit you’re riding around where my childhood friend lived. I can confirm those hills are actually steep. I ate shit going down on a scooter many times!
i just did a 15 mile round trip on my recently purchased luna cycle sur ron, from vons area in canyon country down sand canyon, up all the way to the top of mountain range at bear divide picnic area, then all the way back to my house and still had 40 percent left. I weigh 280lbs and had a 20 lb backpack on and was HAMMERING the throttle. That comes out to be around .25 miles per 1 percent of charge and thats climbing the really steep incline up to the crest of the mountain range, and then flooring it back doing 80kmh. Absolutely incredible range. I think i can squeeze out 45-50 miles if i were to do 25 mph on flat ground easily. and again, thats me being 280lbs. Never been happier with a purchase like this. I was worried since it was chinese made, but nothing about this says cheap chinese at all. It feels solid high quality parts american made. I have taken it off some jumps, landed hard, gone down steps and drop offs, wheelies, it takes it all. SO FAR. only had it a few months, but i dont see any reason to think it will degrade.
The charger plugin technique leaves a lot to be desired, Luna cycles "the" battery people, you should make a longer life battery, plus a reserve on the battery would be a good idea, even an audible warning when down to 10% to get you home, this is the best e-bike on the market, one thing I've noticed is the way the battery connects to the wires on top of it, would be better if the battery had electronic lugs on the bottom of it that located in to the frame as it slides in so no wires to snare and become loose and end up with broken connector.
The lapel microphone used probably isn't the best way to capture it... but it's definitely a mechanical sound! Afterall, it does go through a chain drive.
Hard empirical data! Love it! Excited to see where the bottlenecks are in the powertrain (i.e. max continuous wattage from battery, thru ESC, to motor) and which is the limiting factor for the 3kw continuous/6kw peak rating.
We have a bike currently running 36KW through it (6 times more than stock) and we've been racing and riding it for weeks now TRYING to break it! Nothing yet, stock motor barely gets warm during the races, drivetrain all stock and nothing has broken!
Luna Cycles Nice! Is that the limit of the battery then? I know you have a different ESC on that bike. Is it actually drawing 36kw, or is that just what the upgraded ESC is rated for?
I get 25km with 10-15% left, 75kg with gear, sur ron X , only woods mostly flat, at max speed I can do, max speed 70km/h with 54t sproket, OEM cst tire front, Uride tire rear with reinforced tube. I need a 60v50a bat , I do this twice a day home-work work-home. With rear OEM CST and OEM tube I get 30% bat left.
Nice to know the tricks... although its NEVER a good idea to run the battery to zero. If you run to zero and then let it sit for months, thats even worse!
That was encouraging...up until the point where you had to do all the voodoo to get the charger to work. Has that been fixed? Seems like a software/hardware bug.
1) They should fix the obvious issue between charger and BMS ... Either the BMS should not allow such low Voltage on discharge or it should have a recovery procedure built-in .... Instead the monkeying around with a plug. 2) the next test should be on single track off road trails, since that is what the bike is marketed for ... No? No point buying this bike to ride on paved roads, in my opinion.
Keep in mind, it is NEVER a good idea to run your battery down to absolute zero... when it got down to 3% it started to intermittently cut out when applying a lot of throttle, but we kept pushing over and over until it just gave up for good! If you don't do that and absolutely kill the battery, this will be a non issue. :)
Luna Cycles I hear you, but I cannot see how this is a good prudent solution. Most EV vehicles will simply let you low drain the battery only to the point chargers can recover from in normal way. Not a deal breaker for me, just wondering out loud.

How is the peddle setup? Dose it charge the battery while peddling? What kind of things would be needed to do to make it street legal? How good is the battery at charging off the break charging?
i think it really depends on your use case. The two specific examples I can think of for getting pedals would be 1) Going to far places with your bike and really pushing the battery (ie far off dirt trail) and 2) calling it an 'e-bike' when cops ask because this thing really blurs the lines on the whole e-bike/e-motorcycle class.

Good evening. We want to test the range in mountain climbing from 100% to 10%. How many kilometers do you travel in difficult sand dunes? This will be very interesting. Your followers from Saudi Arabia
Ohhh thanks for the sacrifice. The single best way to damage a pack of batteries is deep discharge. The next best way to deteriorate a pack is leaving it at 100% for any longer then needed. (Store at around 60-70%)... When a pack is drained very low, usually multiple cells will be depleted well below their recommended minimum well before others in the pack. Silly the bikes battery protection didn’t cut out before it started getting slow... going flat Flat flat can fundamentally damage them for life. I would have stopped at 10% and estimated the remaining range.
Quite impressive to me. I´m courious if or not the Bike dies in strong rain? I want to know is it really allday useable? Range and speed is great so far, but the all weather usage is a main issue for this candidat.
Just got mine...and the battery range is poor..I went 20 kms at about 50 KPH and had 64% left..so an estimate of about 45 km range at 50 KPH for a full battery...will be building and testing my own extender pack, and will see...
The controller mods you guys made in other videos, will any of that be available to customers? Great range for a emx bike.. I want to see someone hucking it off jumps..

With lithium ion batteries, you can charge ANYTIME you want! 70%, 80%, doesn't matter, there's no memory and no harm! It's best to NOT go to 0% actually.
Alex Basset the chemistry really dictates that ... No different for Tesla or Sur-Ron to be honest .... Which means 20-80 life to maximize range, if that's what you care for. It means, to never charge over 80% and never discharge under 20%. Anything outside is less than ideal. Obviously not catastrophic, just not ideal. Of course, some would argue that even 30-70 is better. Sure, but not really practical. At the end of the day, the battery doesn't not need to live 10 years ... By then there will be a different/ always better chemistry ...
Alex Basset forgot to say ... Never charge up to 100% in hot weather ... +30C ... And leave the pack sitting at 100% at the same time. The internal components of the battery cells hate that sort of environment.

They have regen coasting (when you let off the throttle) in sport mode. In eco mode it does not. They do not have regenerative braking (which means regen when you apply the brakes).
On yesterday's range test ride, Matt passed 2 different sheriff's cars and they both just glanced and kept rolling. As long as you're not exceeding the speed limit (especially at 25-30mph) and you're wearing a helmet (Matt was just using a bike helmet), we haven't heard of any issues. That being said, we don't recommend riding them where its not "legal", and this really is an off-road vehicle!
How come there are no baskets available with it? If I buy an Ebike it better have hauling capability, I am not wearing no backpack! Plus that rear gear being Aluminum bothers me. I'd think a chain would wear that out significantly. A replace once a year kind of thing, perhaps. That low voltage cutout reminds me of charging my electric lawnmower. I own a nueton. Good mower for 10+ years. I've replaced the SLA battery once.
John Possum Many owners have already figured out baskets and storage solutions, check out the Sur Ron Facebook group for ideas! As for the low voltage cutout, it’s really only an issue if you go ALL THE WAY dead... Matt kept milking the throttle for every yard he could get! Haha
I don't do FB. How about you quote me a price and ETA on a Sur Ron with baskets and the following mods; I need all the controls on the right because I lost my Left hand's ability to squeeze. Also if you could put the bars higher up? I'm serious. I just came in from wrenching on one of my other bikes and me trying to adapt it I just stripped out the star fangled nut. I was trying to install a new adjustable stem to make it ride more upright. Turns out I bought the wrong size of that, too. I hate mms! When I buy one I do NOT want baskets on it. It'll be me trails/off-road bike and I don't want to pay for an included baskey that I'll never use. So to each their own.
Luna Cycles Im trying to install my cyclone motor on my 2015 giant trance mtb. the BB is a press fit thought. Are there any adapters that can covert it to threaded?
Impressive but still nowhere near the performance of my 125cc Motoped that goes 60 MPH with an endless range. If I could get 50 MPH and 100 miles I would be in but that is a long way away and will be extremely expensive.
The bike is expensive , and the range is way to little for what you pay. I really like the style tho. But the range is what's stopping me and the noise..
Compared to other Ebikes or electric motorcycle it is not expensive at all and I think the price and the range are both really really good (especially for the weight of the bike...48kg). The Spitzing M1 costs 12000$. I have a Cube Stereo 120 SL(2017) with a Bosch CX Motor and 500Wh Battery, the price was 4600€/5200$. The range is 35km/22miles if you ride fast but of course you have to pedal yourself. If they would have build it to be able to ride twice the range it would be much too heavy and cost + 2000$ . .
The bike weights 40-50% of a 125ccm MX bike...that is why it makes so much fun. They have done everything right. The bike is nearly perfect and the best thing atm. I would like to have Fox Suspension, because I am used to it. All my bikes have it...But this would add 3000$ Do you know any ebike that can compete with the Sur-ron?? You wrote that you get too little range for what you pay...which bike gives you better range for a better price?
I'm not impressed because for as much climbing you did you went downhill, consuming very little voltage while going downhill, so really you can flat line your descent and ascent and you end up with not that good a distance. That plus a saddle that makes your arse sore is not a good advertisement. My BBSHD (bought from Luna) which I have paired with a 30AH 52V bag battery goes three times the distance at least, at the same speeds and I can peddle if I run out of juice. And most importantly does not make my arse sore because I have a proper saddle.
It's important to keep in mind the draw of the battery when going uphill is FAR more costly to the range than the benefit of cruising downhill. Plus, when going downhill I had to brake almost every hill to stay below 25-30MPH... braking is wasted energy, making this test even less accurate than a straight line test. If it had regenerative braking, then your observation would be entirely true!
Does your pedego go 50MPH with throttle only? Does your Pedego weigh 115lbs? Does your pedego perform like a motorcycle off-road? Does your pedego impress people? I'm assuming the answer is NO to all of those... LOL

When I buy one I do NOT want baskets on it. It'll be me trails/off-road bike and I don't want to pay for an included baskey that I'll never use. So to each their own.
To each their own is right! Most people just use this for play time, others have already mounted gun racks, baskets, yard equipment, etc!
How much do you weight?
185lb rider.
To have decent margin, I'd limit rides to 30 miles and re-charge.
max speed 190lb rider = around 20mile range
is this in hacienda heights
No, in San Dimas... although it looks similar!
Luna Cycles Im trying to install my cyclone motor on my 2015 giant trance mtb. the BB is a press fit thought. Are there any adapters that can covert it to threaded?

out of stock everywhere except ebay and they are asking 10k for it might aswell get a zero for that kind of money.
KoG GoK You can pre-order on our site ($3575) and we expect the next shipment to arrive very soon, estimated delivery mid-July!
If you guys made the sur-ron silent I would buy one. Can't stand the noise it makes
Ruuku1 they do a belt drive but its a limited edition model.
Oooooo yes I want one could you send it to the uk 🇬🇧
Ebay
Impressive but still nowhere near the performance of my 125cc Motoped that goes 60 MPH with an endless range. If I could get 50 MPH and 100 miles I would be in but that is a long way away and will be extremely expensive.
Would rather build my own for the money
All my bikes have it...But this would add 3000$
Do you know any ebike that can compete with the Sur-ron??
I wish can carry 110 kg fat ass like me
Tried to get one on finance 😂
Can u sponsor me a bike please I'll advertise strictly for you guys
Bionx.
Lol wow that thing sucks. How much does it cost $300?
and how much of that was coasting down hill not using power... pretty weak... my pedego does this easy...
Does your pedego go 50MPH with throttle only? Does your Pedego weigh 115lbs? Does your pedego perform like a motorcycle off-road? Does your pedego impress people? I'm assuming the answer is NO to all of those... LOL
bluesti3 my pedego is 60lbs...itll do 25.... and its not a illegal class 3 gettin pulled over all the time.
Ok. Should have watched video . All. Lol
