I was disappointed when Avi left Pentatonix; but his solo career has proved that he’s an extremely talented man. I’m now addicted to his extraordinary compositions and unleashed vocal fluidity. Geoff Castellucci’s cover has been my benchmark. Now it’s Avi’s. Thank you for explaining why. Nice to see you playing a guitar…
Your ear for music and knowledge blows my mind. I find your channel so interesting, especially when you cover music I love such as Avi Kaplan. It helps me appreciate the music all the more.
I love how your eyes express your enjoyment while you listen to Avi ~ It's wonderful to watch someone who respects Avi's talent as much as I do ~ Thank You!
I saw Avi last May and he performs live just as incredibly as in studio versions. That's a rare talent. His producer at the time (Shooter Jennings) said Avi had a symphony in his throat. The man is truly a beautiful human being in addition to an incredibly multi talented artist. Try 'When I'm a Fool' live at Sunset Sound or 'All is Well' 7 layer sessions filmed in Netherlands church with Avi and a guitar. Goosebumps!!!! Great reaction.😅
Avi's voice is so different from when he was with PTX. More front of face than the classical way he sang with them. He probably felt stunted with just singing bass drops. His going out on his own has really opened his talent up instead of being in the background. Not that I didn't love when he was with them, I surely did! His talent can shine now more than ever.
I have heard Avi in the past and always enjoyed his singing. To me personally, with this performance his vocal ability was shown in a deeper way almost. Like, wow is the only way I can describe his control. Very impressive.
The Animals was my major intro to this song but Lead Belly sang it in the 40’s and Tom Ashley in the 30’s who said it was an old folk song from many years ago. I did like Jeremy Renner’s version which probably isn’t as well done but it has a lot of emotion in it. Surprised “Hawkeye” could sing. I like Avi’s version - the whistling is great - reminds me of a cowboy singing in a Western leaning on a horse post. Thanks for this, Sir.
Avi is so good to listen to and the song suits him and he suits the song - he makes it his own! Plus - Sir Hairless on the guitar AND humming in duet with Avi!! 🎸 🎶 What a treat!! Thank you for another educational and entertaining analysis SH!! 👏 👌🎵
Avi performed "House of the Rising Sun" as his only cover during his 2019 US and early 2020 European tours. To show you how he changed it up a bit to perform it with his 4-piece touring band, here's the video I shot of the August 24, 2019 Dallas, Texas show. (I always captured his intros, to catch any backstories and fun stuff.) I apologize for the video, as I was in standing-room-only at the sold-out show, and stuck against a wall at the side. But the audio is good. Listen to how he opted to switch his whistling to the honky-tonk piano. That part is handled expertly by Daniel Ellsworth, who was the pianist on his recent "Healing" recording, and on all 4 songs in the Sunset Sound Session. And on organ in "Feel Alright". th-cam.com/video/Hk_Mh4SweXQ/w-d-xo.html
I hope Avi sees this reaction because of your added humming. The tune was going through my head when you sang it! I love Avi's rendition AND whistling! A very nice reaction. Thank you.
Avi is just awesome! Not only an amazing talent with his voice and instrumentals but he is the nicest person as well! Love everything he has ever done and can’t wait for what’s to come. Love your reactions and analysis! Simple the BEST! ❤🙌🏻
I don't know how I missed this reaction, but I absolutely Love this version from Avi's cover. I really enjoy watching your facial expressions & musical breakdowns while Avi sings. You bring so much detail in your reactions. 👏👏 Avi really knows what works him & he Always brings his unique style & sound with his iconic /"sing/whistles. By the way, Avi just released yesterday his newest song "Good Good Love" & friday the 12th releases the full album. Thanks again, Such a fun & interesting reaction, 😊
Not sure how I missed this from Avi! You're not even halfway through, and I'm pretty sure this surpasses the Animals version for me. I grew up with that version, also, although in my case it was much longer ago, since I was only ten when the Animals performed it on the Ed Sullivan Show...
Good one. Deep voice, simple open manner without too much of showing off plus acustic guitar. The whistle reminded me Zaz, relaxed style, like singing at home or on picnic with friends
That was fun. Thanks Just FYI re: Rising Sun "The oldest known recording of the song, under the title "Rising Sun Blues", is by Appalachian artists Clarence "Tom" Ashley and Gwen Foster, who recorded it on September 6, 1933, on the Vocalion label" This is a favorite song of Avi's. I remember this fund raiser very well. He is in the stairwell of his agents office building in Nashville because he could not get good enough coverage from his cabin. He's doing this on his I-phone I believe. There was another song where he ended up being accompanied by a bird that an Avi fan can get for you. His whistling he always does through his teeth.
One of the things that gives me great satisfaction is watching a talented (and nice) person unlocking their full potential to shine bright and high. And Avi is one of those talents that has been increasingly filling me with happiness every time I watch him performing solo: his voice/music is organic, soulful, and I deeply appreciate what I’ve seen/heard from him so far. Another talented nice person who has conquered my admiration in the music field is known as Sir Hairless: I feel increasingly happier every new note I watch him playing, singing/humming, or unveiling its musical secrets. Now, I’ll avoid fangirling behaviour about the debut of your acoustic guitar on the channel, but I shall admit: yes, I melted inside a little bit 😊I look forward to seeing more from your musical skills whenever you feel comfortable to share them with us; thank you❣
As always, your analysis makes me appreciate the songs I love even more. From one short humming sequence in this video, I have now decided that a duet between you and Avi is something I would really love to see.
Great reaction and analysis again, thank you! Of course this song was one of the first I played on the guitar as well, more than 40 years ago and I still know all the lyrics by heart. 😉 And I love you singing in a duet with Avi! 😘
Hi, my friend. Have not heard this talented musician before, but he has a wonderfully warm, and huggable voice. ☺️ His whistle is a beautiful addition to this iconic song. It definitely is folky, and it elevates it to another haunting level. I also enjoy when you show us your talent. Piano, guitar, musical theory, and voice, you do it all! Thank you for your expert, and very Interesting and Helpful musical explanations. ❤🇺🇸
🎩🎼🎩🎼🎩🎼 ... good evening Sir Hairless . Seeing this title was a great surprise!! I have become a great fan of Avi. His voice could and might be "the" voice of the 2020s. He is beyond unique. His voice gets under my skin , in a good way. I really liked seeing you bop back and forth to this song .. and then really , really liked seeing strum a few chords for us on your nice guitar. I think we may see you performing a song soon .. with either guitar or piano .. or both .. and then you sharing your singing voice. It would be a nice treat. Avi can really sing this song well .. no surprise. Thanks for bringing some joy into my night Sir. 🎩🎼🎩🎼🎩🎼

@@SirHairless do you know the Cover of that Song by Johnny Cash? Also great. Somehow everytime i hear that Song (also from the animals) i think, Johnny IS Just the perfekt voice.... Don't really know why 😊 and Avi Sounds at a few notes nearly exactly Like Cash.
@@SirHairless i guess i fell for an AI Version of Johnny Cash sing 'house of the rising sun'. But i still Like it and it is exactly how my brain would expect how the Song should Sound Like If Johnny Had sung it... Sorry for the confusion... 🫣
I’d love your reaction to Avi singing two notes at once. Overtone……it’s amazing! There are videos of just him show the audience how he does it. The one PTX song I’m sure he is doing it in is AHA. I love it!
Avi is just amazing in live performances . He just comes alive . He's one musician i will always go see on tour because its just electric when he sings.
FYI: not sure how you feel about "comparing and contrasting" (as my high school English teacher used to say), but Geoff Castellucci has also done a cover of this song. A very different version of the song from what Avi does here!
By far, this is my favorite Avi performance AND my favorite version of this song! He kept me absorbed throughout and the little surprises he threw in just added to the listening pleasure.
I’m so familiar with Geoff Castelucci’s version that it was hard not to compare. They are both fantastic but could NOT be more different. I love Avi’s stripped back take on it with just the guitar. And his voice is so beautiful. I’m also impressed with his whistling ability. Rob from HF is also great at whistling. It’s interesting how 2 bass singers took the same song and did completely different things with it. Both amazing and using their talents in their own unique ways.
Eric Burdon didn't sing according to expectations because he didn't have any musical training. He just sang "from the boll**ks" according to the guy who took over from Alan Price. I loved The Animals (I'm also from Tyneside) but Avi's version is amazing. I can't choose between them! Great reaction, looking forward to the next Avi reaction - and to his new song coming out next week.
I love how Avi brings folk into a song. That’s one reason I enjoy listening to him. And I love his smooth vocals. Thanks for the strumming in your analysis. This shows your versatility! Great song and reaction. 🎶 Cyd
Great reaction Sir Hairless! I love Avi's beautiful soulful voice and I thought the whistling was a fab, unique feature. People often bemoan the fact that Avi left Pentatonix but we wouldn't have had his brilliant solo career and songs like this if he hadn't! 😊
Mi niño, que lindo que es verte disfrutar de lo que escuchas y con cuanto amor nos transmites y nos enseñas. Gracias por hacer tan disfrutable cada momento y cada día. sigue así, un abrazo enorme de madre como siempre.
I love Avi and your reactions are terrific! Even if you don't react to it, you really should listen to Geoff Castellucci's version of this song. It is a true low bass version and the best cover I've ever heard.
Having once researched it, I can tell you that the first known recorded version of House of the Rising Sun was in the earlier 1930s by artist Clarence Ashley. However, there are some references to even earlier versions being performed and reported as such in the Appalachians.
Sorry I'm late in commenting on this one. I've been traveling. Thank you for a great analysis. Avi is unique in his interpretations of covers. Just an FYI, Avi has a new song coming out on April 8th. Have a great one, cheers!
Yikes! I missed this one, somehow. So praising Avi's whistling talents to you was superfluous. There is something so enthralling about a singer and an instrument. No fancy production or effects. I believe it registers in a special way to our primal ear... like sitting in front of a real fire, or eating a home-cooked meal. Simple, and real, and nurturing to the soul.
Like you, I grew up enjoying the version by The Animals. As you said there are many more versions and I like to mention a few. The next group that I truly enjoyed was the version by The Platters. In this particular song there was a female lead who had a heck of a voice. Now of course we can't forget the other bass singer, Geoff Castellucci. His version is just as good as Avi's but different also. The newest version that I have heard is by Gigi De Lana. It's absolutely fantastic!
Avi’s voice is just beautiful, so deep & rich yet agile. Thank you for your analysis - it was enhances my appreciation for my fav artists. (Also I love your intro forehead slap, makes me laugh every time 😆)
Wonderful reaction to Avi. Here are a few of my favorite Avi Kaplan Videos: 1) Light in the Hallway. Avi lead with PTX, wonderful live performance in Lisbon, Port. Link: th-cam.com/video/uhUhFVCIxgo/w-d-xo.html 2) Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair. Duet with Peter Hollens. Incredibly beautiful. 3) Quarter Past Four. Original. Solo project shortly before leaving PTX and seems to be sharing his thoughts about that. 4) Hey Ya. OutKast cover with a wonderful group called the Sequoias, which whom he did an early album. 5) Sweet Adeline Part 2. Interesting song - he wrote Sweet Adeline Part 1 as a love song, and then brought out Part 2 as a breakup song. The lyrics are heart-wrenching. I couldn't find a good live version, so here's an audio only one. Link: th-cam.com/video/-Wg9zB25EwM/w-d-xo.html 6) California Dreamin'. Avi in 3 parts. (video short) Link: th-cam.com/users/shortsVPigXtA0ToU 7) Short video of Avi and three other guys singing one line and killing me. Link: th-cam.com/video/JJVKLElAQ_4/w-d-xo.html Enjoy!
I love this reaction. Always been a fan of Avi since PTX days. Miss that guy. It is heartwarming to see him happy in his career and he's doing quite well for himself. The Animals is the only version of this song I'm familiar with but Avi did it justice and in his own unique style. Thanks for your analysis. As always, great reaction. 😊
In my opinion the best version of this is Eric Burdon and The Animals (1964). This version makes me think of it sounding like it would be a movie soundtrack renditions. A very talented guy.
House of the rising sun, like many appalacian folk / blues has its roots in england. Probbly 1700s, then brought to us in 1850s. I love folk so gs like this. :)
Not sure, but I think "ah ha singapore" showcases Avi's ability to mess with speakers with his low notes. He and Mitch sing together so well. th-cam.com/video/aT2Nm4fYmI4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=dBCyyxGcheFrnyQV
Great analysis (as expected 😉❤️)! Will we ever see you playing a whole song on the guitar? (Do you have your own songs?) 🤩🔥 The Animals‘ version is one of my favorite songs. ❤ And I was looking forward to Avi singing this. 😊 But I‘m not sure how I feel about the whistling. 😅 The early recorded versions of this song are so different - also from each other. 😳 Somehow the song makes me think of Angel from Montgomery by John Prine. Not sure why 😅 Might you maybe feel like analyzing the version John Prine sang with Bonnie Raitt? or Bonnie Raitt‘s (or Adele‘s): I Can’t Make You Love Me 😅 (I think I‘m getting carried away here. 😂)
Thank you Unlikely you'll see me play a whole song on the guitar, but who knows what's in store for the future, can't say at this point Haha thanks for the recommendations 🎶
The only way I can whistle is with a blade of grass between my thumbs, but I think Avi's style is called "whistling through his teeth." Don't ask me how it's done! (There are tutorials on TH-cam.)
Frohe Ostern derweil. 🙋♀️
I love Avi’s voice but haven't really been able to get into his solo work. What I hear in this recording as well as others I have heard is that he’s placing his voice in a slightly more nasal resonance that just isn’t doing it for me. Seems stylistically appropriate so maybe it’s just the genre that’s not moving me. I’m glad that he’s happily following his muse and showing us his guitar skills. It’s just not what I am drawn to. But always enjoy your analysis, Sir Hairless!

@@SirHairless i guess i fell for an AI Version of Johnny Cash sing 'house of the rising sun'. But i still Like it and it is exactly how my brain would expect how the Song should Sound Like If Johnny Had sung it... Sorry for the confusion... 🫣
@@SirHairless and i could have sworn he sang it...
Brings back so many memories! Wow!! Thanks!!
FYI: not sure how you feel about "comparing and contrasting" (as my high school English teacher used to say), but Geoff Castellucci has also done a cover of this song. A very different version of the song from what Avi does here!
I've added this to my list for a future reaction!
By far, this is my favorite Avi performance AND my favorite version of this song! He kept me absorbed throughout and the little surprises he threw in just added to the listening pleasure.
Nice to hear
This would be a great one to contrast with the one by Geoff Castellucci
Ooh, his whistling is wonderful. It sounds like it's with his teeth. Thank you and whomever suggested this; I hadn't heard it before.
Sir Hairless - so you also play guitar, I had no idea - you are indeed a true musician!!
🎶
I’m so familiar with Geoff Castelucci’s version that it was hard not to compare. They are both fantastic but could NOT be more different. I love Avi’s stripped back take on it with just the guitar. And his voice is so beautiful. I’m also impressed with his whistling ability. Rob from HF is also great at whistling.
It’s interesting how 2 bass singers took the same song and did completely different things with it. Both amazing and using their talents in their own unique ways.
I've seen a few comments saying that Geoff's version is the benchmark! I need to check it out (with a future reaction )
@@SirHairless Hmmm maybe it should be my next request
@@thisismetoday7423
Avi is a master whistler. It's so amazing what he can do.
Always enjoy your reactions!
🎶 Cyd
Thanks for sharing your musical knowledge and insights with us. Great reaction.
Great reaction Sir Hairless! I love Avi's beautiful soulful voice and I thought the whistling was a fab, unique feature. People often bemoan the fact that Avi left Pentatonix but we wouldn't have had his brilliant solo career and songs like this if he hadn't! 😊
Thanks! Exactly, one change in one place leads to a multitude of other opportunities in other places
Thank you very much Sir H of Music, first time I saw you on the guitar liked the song and your explanation, greets from Nederland 🌷🌷
Mi niño, que lindo que es verte disfrutar de lo que escuchas y con cuanto amor nos transmites y nos enseñas. Gracias por hacer tan disfrutable cada momento y cada día. sigue así, un abrazo enorme de madre como siempre.
Another great reaction. Thanks
The Platters sing a version?! This is weird because not even 5 minutes ago I was listening to "My Prayer" by them
@@SirHairless Yup! I'm listening to it right now on TH-cam.
That was awesome. His whistling is amazing.
Now you've seen this version you must check out the fan video. Again live but with a band. It is soooo joyous! I don't have the link.
Another informative reaction from you. I always learn new things about what I am hearing. Thank you, can't wait until the next one!
Love this version 🫶🏼💜
Watch video of Avi ,guitar and solo of Man of Constant Sorrow at A Capella Academy. Some of his highest notes. Amazing.
Avi’s voice is just beautiful, so deep & rich yet agile. Thank you for your analysis - it was enhances my appreciation for my fav artists.
(Also I love your intro forehead slap, makes me laugh every time 😆)
Epic Avi😍 Great reaction dear, love from Italy
Thank you for your reaction...so informative regarding such a wonderful artist! I enjoyed it.
Wonderful reaction to Avi.
Here are a few of my favorite Avi Kaplan Videos:
1) Light in the Hallway. Avi lead with PTX, wonderful live performance in Lisbon, Port. Link: th-cam.com/video/uhUhFVCIxgo/w-d-xo.html
2) Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair.
Link: th-cam.com/video/-Wg9zB25EwM/w-d-xo.html
6) California Dreamin'. Avi in 3 parts. (video short) Link: th-cam.com/users/shortsVPigXtA0ToU
7) Short video of Avi and three other guys singing one line and killing me. Link: th-cam.com/video/JJVKLElAQ_4/w-d-xo.html
Enjoy!
Thanks for these! Will need to update my list accordingly
Yes, it's fantastic! "Pentatonix, AHA, Live at the the Star Vista, Singapore"
So you need to see the version of The White Buffalo, that sad voice will make you cry. hahaha
Great analysis (as expected 😉❤️)! Will we ever see you playing a whole song on the guitar? (Do you have your own songs?) 🤩🔥
The Animals‘ version is one of my favorite songs. ❤
And I was looking forward to Avi singing this. 😊 But I‘m not sure how I feel about the whistling. 😅
The early recorded versions of this song are so different - also from each other. 😳
Somehow the song makes me think of Angel from Montgomery by John Prine. Not sure why 😅
Might you maybe feel like analyzing the version John Prine sang with Bonnie Raitt?
or
Bonnie Raitt‘s (or Adele‘s): I Can’t Make You Love Me 😅
(I think I‘m getting carried away here. 😂)
Thank you Unlikely you'll see me play a whole song on the guitar, but who knows what's in store for the future, can't say at this point
Haha thanks for the recommendations 🎶
@@SirHairless 👍🏼☺️❤️
I love Bonnie Raitt!
@@cathyboyce6457 ❤️😊
Can you do a reaction to Avi's song Aberdeen, please.
The only way I can whistle is with a blade of grass between my thumbs, but I think Avi's style is called "whistling through his teeth." Don't ask me how it's done! (There are tutorials on TH-cam.)
⚡⚡⚡🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥⚡⚡⚡
Sir, I for one, would like to know more about your classical music...just how many instruments do you play?
Not many Don't think I've ever touched a brass instrument in my life
Frohe Ostern derweil. 🙋♀️
Have you ever listened to Angeline Jordan ? Love first reactions and she is soooooo good . Love you to wach and review her
Not yet! She's on my radar. She didn't win the recent members' poll of new artists to react to, but I imagine I will react to her in the future 😊
You may be interested in the fat that this is a traditional folk song, that has gone through many permutations, and is in common domain. It's author is unknown.
Before the Animals? Try Joan Baez 1960. 🙂
No way...
The Animals version is the Best there is, and always will be!
