    Interesting fact, Cadillac was the first company to introduce electric start.
    In 1908 a woman was driving her car accross a bridge when it stalled. Because of the difficult starting technique of the crank start she couldn't get it started. So a man named Byron carter stopped to help her. While he was cranking, the engine backfired and spun the crank around backwards hitting him in the face and breaking his jaw. Gangrene top effect and he died later that year. Carter was a close friend of Cadillac so he decided to get rid of the crank start because no one would ever be hurt by his cars again. So he contact Charles Kettering, who worked for DELCO at the time and contracted him to being an electric starter/ generator for his cars. By 1912 they were completed and installed in the Cadillac model 30. And the rest is history.

      I have a 1946 International Farmall Super A tractor with a belly mower that I use to cut my grass with. About 10 years ago the electric starter went out and I had to use the hand crank. Cranked it probably 50 times with no problem, but I messed up and was standing in the wrong position and it kicked back. I let go, but the crank handle got me on the back swing. Broke my right arm (radius) and wrist, shattering 3 metacarpals. I was in various casts and splints for 6 months and it was over a year before I could bear my full body weight on my right wrist. Even at a low 6.0:1 compression ratio, the kickback is no joke on those things!

It was very off road capable because there were no good roads and you could use it to power a sawmill, cook food (no joke. There was an accessory for this), generate electricity, and fit it with tracks and skis for winter use. The list just keeps going...

    A lot of People: “Gosh, I want to go back to Simple Times.”
    Simple Times, Contextually Speaking: Cars had one door on the opposite side, you had to push a bunch of levers both inside and underneath, and then crank it repeatedly, all to just start the thing up!
    What Simple Times really mean: Apply the Brake, and push an Ignition button to start your Engine!

  • @lawr5764
    @lawr5764 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    DO NOT start the car the way this doofus did. Lift up on the handle with your left hand. A half turn is all it takes. If the handle were to kick back, it'll roll off your hand, actually moving your arm out of the way. (It's still a bit scary, though) If you're ever pushing DOWN on the crank, that's when you'll get your arm broke.
    I guess you could pull the crank sideways a half turn across the TOP of its rotation with your right hand. But the wire to operate the choke is on the left side of the radiator where you couldn't reach it. If the car is already warmed up you wouldn't need the choke.

    Well actually you don’t need to turn off the gas under the gas tank and the levers should already be set from when you parked the car after the last drive. Just turn the key to battery, go out front and turn the crank while pulling the choke wire. Also, never ever ever turn the crank all the way around … just set it at 7:00 and pull up. I drive a 1923 model T every day. A very reliable car and starts a quickly as any modern car.

    When they were talking about how fast you could go with the Model T compared to a horse, it reminded me of the Michelin Tire Company’s tour guides. They were the reason why cars started be associated with freedom during that time, because a car could take you places the train couldn’t reach, within a fraction of the time needed to get there by horse. When these Michelin guides started mapping American routes, road trips became much more common because the guides gave 2 pieces of info that most people didn’t have which made it impossible to go on these long trips. They didn’t know the routes, and they didn’t know how to maintain or sometimes even drive their car. The Michelin guide had in depth explanations on how to repair your car, where all the filling stations were, how to safety make a turn and react to other cars on the road, and what the best routes are to reach your destination. That guide was a monumental step in making cars the dominant mode of transport.
