  • Dahlias cultivation, different species and tips on care
The origin of dahlias is in Mexico and is its national flower. These original dahlias had simple flowers and a corolla composed of only eight ligules.
The genus is made up of 43 species, all of them from the American continent; and most of these are endemic to Mexico. They develop at altitudes ranging from 500 to 3,500 m above sea level. Some species grow in reduced areas, such as Dahlia macdougallii, which has only been found in one town in Oaxaca; others have a wider distribution such as Dahlia coccinea, which grows from Chihuahua to Guatemala.
Dahlias were used in pre-Hispanic times to adorn temples and houses during rituals. In addition, they had medicinal and culinary purposes (the petals and the tuber were cooked).
In Mexico, the wild species that gave rise to the cultivated varieties that we know today still grow.
