  • Missouri bass fishing legend Mike McClelland talks about winter bass fishing on highland reservoirs, focusing on the effectiveness of blade baits and the Damiki rig. While we've covered Damiki rigging winter bass, we've been light on blade bait content. McClelland covers the basics of fishing blade baits for suspended deep-water spotted and largemouth bass and how sliding in color changes and a periodic presentation change can keep you catching.

McClelland emphasizes the necessity of using blade baits when targeting deep fish in winter. Blade baits sink fast, which is a must when making precise casts or drops on bass when using forward-facing or 2D sonar, as the bass constantly move. McClelland details his light-line spinning rod setup, consisting of a low-diameter braided mainline to a low-visibility fluorocarbon leader connected via an FG knot. Low-diameter braid facilitates the following:
    1. Fast sink rate due to minimal drag (small diameter)
    2. Superior sensitivity due to low stretch
    3. Hook setting power, again, due to low stretch, a must when fishing deeper
Combined with a low-visibility fluorocarbon leader, these attributes round out the optimal line setup.

Forward-facing sonar has revolutionized our understanding of fish behavior in winter, revealing that bass commonly roam deeper in pursuit of shad than previously thought. McClelland highlights the importance of finding baitfish and bass with LiveScope, backed by observing natural indicators like birds. While you can use 2D sonar to target these fish, the forward-looking range and real-time nature of LiveScope brings a whole new level of effectiveness when sharpshooting suspended bass.
McClelland delves into the specifics of using blade baits, a metal lure with lead or tungsten, which vibrates when ripped through the water. He discusses varying the action based on the fish's response - some days, minimal movement is key, while more vigorous action triggers bites on others. McClelland stresses the importance of adapting how you work the bait to the fish's reaction. Blade baits aren't a one-size-fits-all presentation - try different colors and adjusting the snap position for varied actions. In McClelland's experience, less action can be more effective in cold water.
Lastly, McClelland points out the benefits of alternating between different baits such as Damiki rig varients. The common denominator is fishing heavy, fast-sinking baits. Both presentations dive fast, so you can get them in front of the bass before they move.

This was recently filmed in the Ozarks which can be quite chilly this time of the year. But heck, our MN staff is still wearing hooded sweatshirts up here and it's nearly Jan!

@Wired2Fish I know it's area dependent just makes me smile when I see ice and snow and bouncing blades off ice into open water

I live in southern ark and it’s the coldest start to winter we’ve had in years! We’ve already got water in the 40s whereas last year it stayed 50s all year

Thank you for actually FISHING in the video as opposed to just sitting in front of the camera talking about it.

Let me start by complimenting the production work. However, the entire premise is based on locating schools of bass with FFS. Not to belabor the entire FFS issue, but what about the majority of bass fishermen who don't use or have FFS on the front deck of their boat? Is this video a sales pitch for FFS, entertainment or an instructional video? Maybe all three. Just not for the majority of bass fishermen.

I dont have FFS. Instead I usually spend hours looking at topo maps prior to getting to the lake. When I get to the lake, i scan around and map structures, and if I find bait on 2D sonar in those areas, odds are theres big fish nearby. (I live a few hours from canada by the way. It gets cold here)

You can do the same stuff with 2d, people did it for years.
Not all videos have to cater to non FFS. There are plenty without FFS no need to complain about the ones that are 🙂
