    Thank you for this video Robert. I have 2 rescue pianos that I am restoring at the moment. An 1898 Mason & Hamlin 50" upright, and a 1865 Steinway 52" upright. Once was free and the other I gave $50 for. They both have required extensive work, but the names on the fallboards made them worth saving. Free pianos are a buyer beware market, there are some gems out there, but there are a lot of clunkers too.

    Here in the UK we have such a huge amount of pianos everywhere that high quality pianos literally just get given away here. like, about a month ago I saw someone literally giving away a Steinway Upright, and I got a Semi Concert grand for literally £200, the UK is imo the best place you can live for cheap/free pianos aha

    You’re right-you have to be careful or you might get stuck with a piano that needs serious repairs. I’ve had several people ask if I’d like to take their piano, and it’s hard to say no.

    there's loads in the UK because they're not Grands usually. I got a 20s broadwood upright that just needed tuning. It's great and cost £100 in total for tuning and moving. It's in excellent condition too.

    I see free pianos on Facebook market every day and would love to have one, but the biggest hurdle is moving it from there to here. There's no piano movers in my rural part of Pennsylvania and it's not exactly a DIY process for an inexperienced piano mover such as myself lol

    I had come across a Baldwin Grand almost for free ($50.00). They had it in a storage unit. Too bad someone bought it before I could figure out how to bring it with me.

    I've come across 2 scenarios: 1 lady had an acoustic piano that was in her family for 40+ years. She moved to another city and gave it to a friend who just started playing.
    Another piano is just sitting at home. The family with 2 daughters both took piano lessons eventually moved out. The father who lives in the home doesn't play so nobody played it for 20 years at least. There is a lot of sentimental value to the piano. Both daughters wanted it they live in a small space so the piano stays with the father.
    Personally I have an electronic keyboard. It's a piece of technology like your smartphone. You don't have any attachment to it like it is a part of the family. Every few years you trade it for a newer model with more features. My keyboard is a "toy" that I play with everyday. I mean serious repertoire along with Hanon exercises & Czerny Etudes. Some pianos sit in people's homes like a piece of furniture but my instrument gets played all the time.

    I got a free Challen Piano upright. Its needs a tune and new keys but its beautiful. Old and characteristic. Beautiful and works like a charm even with minor problems.

    Seen old pianos with broken keys in second-hand stores. Some people have pianos sitting at home as a piece of furniture that is in a reasonable condition. It is just kept in the home for sentimental value. And there are public libraries in our city that acquired second-hand pianos. Besides being heavily used on a daily basis by people who dropped in, they have broken keys that are never fixed because libraries are funded by public tax dollars and maintaining pianos in libraries are the last priorities for the city government.
    A friend got a used Baldwin upright from his church for free. He paid for the moving cost and the tuning but still worth it (no broken keys). His wife plays it regularly.
    Personally find it hard to acquire anything bigger than a keyboard. The past few years the family has been moving around and travel around frequently. Having a piano sitting at home wouldn't help when you are half way around the world. And even if I'm settled into a permanent home, wouldn't want to have to deal with moving a piano when it is no longer in use.

    Who is looking for a new acoustic piano or keyboard so you can give me your old one. If you want of course. I just want to practice on a real one, I'm tired of my small screen. Pianos in my country are so so expensive like for a small beginners' keyboard it will cost you around 500$

    Im 15 and Im planning to buy a cheap electric keyboard that costs about 60 dollar and about ₱3000 on our money, it's a huge amount of money but it's okay coz Im earning money online to and save money so I can buy it soon, Im inspired by classical Music, We have an upright Piano my dad bought it but its note is not standard and most strings are broken so I cant use it to practice, seeing someone break Piano for videos breaks my heart like, there's so many people out there who's been dreaming to have that kind of thing and they're just breaking it for fun😔

    • @oldgoat381
      @oldgoat381 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depending on the issue, I charge about $30 at the most (minus replacement) on uprights and depending on which pedal, no more than $50 on grands, but that's me and I would find a local tech to ask
