It's the original; it was written for Allison Fraser to sing (she and William Finn were friends since High School). Barbara Walsh and Stephanie J Block were both competent, but I wish Fraser had been available when Falsettos was brought to Broadway so she could have sung the full score.
i like all the trinas, fraser has a wonderful voice and it stays true to the jazz of in trousers, barbera welsh swings wash cloths around was so comical yet lovable, and stephaine j block showed a lot of emotion with her breakdown, you feel her pain even if your not watching the show and just listening to the soundtrack.
Dont get me wrong I absolutely love stephanie but allison fraser's voice has a smooth sweet twinge to it, and then there's the rougher notes that I forgot the name of that just are the cherry on top. Conclusion: I love allison fraser
I like how different every actress does breaking down, like this one sounds like a slow (maybe druken?) Breakdown and confession to what she thinks but in the 2016 vers. Trina sounds like she's on the brink of absoluete madness
whenever i find a new version of I'm Breaking Down i always think "wow this one is my favorite". love ya, Barbara Walsh, Alison Fraser, and Stephanie J Block
I literally LOVE how she sings this song, but, I prefer the revival version because the orchestra sounds much better, and the swing of the song goes a little faster (which makes me wanna daaaaance).
i know what you mean - the revival version is much livelier, and has a lighter, bouncier feel to it - but it's not an orchestra! the pit band in the revival is absolutely tiny compared to the originals; it only has a pianist, a percussionist, a synth/electric keyboard player, and 1 reed player who switches between clarinet, alto sax, flute, and oboe. I'm Breaking Down is a clarinet song, which is what gives it its style

If anyone by some miracle happens to see this, can you explain the timeline of of the falsetto musical? I absolutely love this soundtrack but I’m a little confused haha
I dont know if you mean the entire Marvin trilogy or just In Trousers, but I'll go ahead and explain the whole thing cause it's my favourite hobby. The Marvin Trilogy is comprised of (surprise) three one-act musicals: In Trousers, March of the Falsettos and Falsettoland. They were written in that order and chronologically tell Marvin's story, but March of the Falsettos and Falsettoland were later combined to create Falsettos. I'll admit I dont know much about In Trousers, but I do know that it's set while Marvin is having an affair with Whizzer, but Trina doesn't know and they're still married. In that show Marvin does a lot of reminiscing about his childhood and other events in his life, so it's less clear when it takes place. It also doesn't help that the whole show is an insane fever dream that even William Finn doesn't fully understand. March of the Falsettos (or act 1 of Falsettos) is set in 1979, after Marvin and Trina's divorce, when Jason is nine. Falsettoland (act 2) is set in 1981, at the start of the AIDS crisis while Jason is 13. I'm Breaking Down was originally in In Trousers, then removed (but put on the cast recording as a bonus track), THEN put in again in 1985. It was later added to Falsettos with some lyrics changes - still sung by Trina and still the same message, but at a slightly different time in her life.
cas charles it does! Thank you so much for taking the time to explain it. The only thing is that, I found a bootleg version of a college doing in trousers, but it didn’t have “to survive the night,” which I was a little confused. I wish there was some kind of way to watch all three chronologicallly. But this explanation cleared up a lot of things, so don’t apologize for the length!
@@mrcrapucinno oh good, I'm glad it helped!! Like I said, In Trousers is my weak point, but if it was a college production my best guess is they just decided to cut the song for reasons specific to them? Thanks for giving me an excuse to talk about falsettos today anyway lmao

Actually, "March of the Falsettos" was the first act of _Falsettos_. "In Trousers" is the prequel. They did add this song to _Falsettos_, though.
