Chuck, love the way you talk about topics that can be ‘sensitive or controversial’ or whatever you want to call it to folks that are not farmers or are not used to it like us. You have a knack for that, without extra expression or extra explanation, that would set anyone at ease. Good stuff.
Couldn't help but snicker when you never broke character, or atleast went right back to what you were talking about, and said "fence is still hot". As always, great content! Definitely keeping up with your channel and watching regularly.
Insiminating tonight with some shipleys semen. Normally 150 a dose, on sale for 25!! Have had many litters from his product! I live an hour from there and drive straight to his farm to get it. Randy is a real nice guy and always as helpful as can be!! Highly recommend Shipley swine genetics to anyone seeing this!!
Subbed from Louisiana! Always happy to find a new channel with shared interest and is relatively active! The audio is what keeps me from being able to watch alot of newer/ smaller channels but yours was enjoyable! Keep it up!
Just found yer channel. Love the videos. Lots of great info & I have learned a lot. We just bought property in Mcminn County, TN & plan to put what I've learned into practice. Best wishes to you and yer family.
we are just getting started with breeding our pigs on our homestead for the first time and this video was very helpful. we live in central Florida.we have a youtube channel on homesteading also.thanks for the video.
Great job filming alone. Very good breeding video for the people. Actually I think one of the best I have seen& I’ve seen quite a few. Great job . Todd
Discovered you guys a couple weeks ago and have been very impressed! I was curious-what are you seeing of the pigs ability to clear brush versus goats? Have some area I would like to clear and pigs would be a better economic choice but wasn't sure how well they would do. Thanks for another great video!
Rotate semen slowly. Shaking up will break the tails from the cells therefore losing their ability for motility. You are doing a tremendous service with your videos.
@@SheratonParkFarms not trying to be rude or change the way you do things, but working in the commercial hog business i have learned a lot over the past 5 years my every day job is farrowing manager, I do however breed we use 2 doses and allow her to except the seman rather than squeezing it in, we breed the first day she locks up, then again the day after if she locks up again. I have a purebred Berkshire gilt off of premium blends, ''wild thing'' boar. We raise registered and commercial cattle in the Texas panhandle, I have just been getting into selling all -natural finished pork. Back to the gilt, I was curious what age or weight do you generally like to breed yours at. I planned on breeding her to a Large black, but would like to breed her to something a bit stouter, but still get them same quality meat. I was asking because I noticed you had really nice Berkshire crosses.
Hi Chuck & Sandra! Quick question... if you mentioned it in the video, I'm sorry I missed it! But, can a sow go into heat while she's nursing? Our piglets are 6 weeks old and she was acting kind of crazy the other day and someone told us she was in heat. But I didn't know if it was possible for her to be in heat while she's lactating and nursing. Thanks for all of the great info! We're going to try AI within the next two months so I'm trying to learn as much as possible!
what kind of benefits does AI have over keeping a boar on your farm? Is it lower cost? Also what kind of genetics are in the boar semen? Hopefully the farm where the semen come from also raises pastured pork. Any help would be appreciated
Do you promote the pork as GMO free? I was covering talking to local grocery stores for their junk veggies but I was worried about the chemicals that could be on that food...that is unless it is an organic market.
@@SheratonParkFarms from what I am reading, it can take between 700 and 900 lbs of fees to finish a pig. Is that what you are finding? What do you pay per pound of feed down there?
Excellent video! I did some AI in the junior college ag program I was in, but not with pigs so I learned a good amount here. Do you have any videos discussing how many paddocks y'all run total with your pigs? I'm looking to get some but trying to figure out how many, paddock sizes, knowing when to move to next one, etc. Thank y'all for the great videos!
Not specifically. We are going to be adding paddocks based on the "groupings". Feeders in a paddock, sow/gilt sets in individual paddocks and boars will rotate between sow/gilt groups. Sizes depend on the terrain and where we are on the farm. Some are smaller than others and some can be pretty big (up to 2 acres at a time). We move based on pressure and disturbance. Typically they don't stay on a spot over about 10 days but can stay longer if they haven't torn it up too bad. Thanks for the feedback. Appreciate ya'll watching.

Fascinating. I was wondering if I had to get a boar.
Thanks for the information.

They are actually very efficient. Maybe not as clear as a goat would do but definitely will open the underbrush up a lot.

About 36 hours
Thank you so much for all your videos!!

Chuck, your gilts are so large! What age or weight do you target for breeding? Seems like you could have bred them months ago? Thanks
Typically around 7 months. These are at about 8 months old. We grow ‘em big here 🤣🤣. Thanks for watching

i wonder how could they not it they havent been crossing it
by the way, thank you for this video

Thanks. You too!
What breed are these gilts? Do you still raise the same breed today?
Duroc/Berkshire cross. Yes, still using the same breed
Those are some fine looking pigs.
Thanks!
Good job!I realize that you only use 1 dose is 1 recommended or 2?
So each pig will actually get 3 doses over the course of about a day and a half. It takes multiple doses to fully inseminate. Thanks for watching

Do you promote the pork as GMO free? I was covering talking to local grocery stores for their junk veggies but I was worried about the chemicals that could be on that food...that is unless it is an organic market.
No. We feed a locally sourced, conventional feed. Our costs would be prohibitive to feed a non-GMO feed.
@@SheratonParkFarms from what I am reading, it can take between 700 and 900 lbs of fees to finish a pig. Is that what you are finding? What do you pay per pound of feed down there?
yes. We are at about 950lbs of feed to reach a market weight of 325-350lbs standing weight. Dont' have that number in front of me right now.
Is the farrowing the same number for smaller breeds
Typically, yes.

Awesome job! Bacon!!!!!
Bacon seed!
Do you need to keep the semen frozen in a nitro tank like they do for cattle etc?
No. I keep it in a wine refrigerator at 62-64 degrees.
Does the semen have to be at any temperature?
Gestation is
3 months
3 weeks
3 days
Easier to count days lol. 112 days, but most tend to go to 115 day
"Fence is hot", LOL
Where do you order the semen?
At what age does a gilt reach sexual maturity?
On our pigs it is typically around 6-7 months of age.
💯
Some Gilts that “Got that loving feeling”🤣🤣
Then realized what the hell this is not how i expected this to go🤣
What will happen if I have the pig sperm for 3 weeks then used it for artificial insemination?
Ever hear the term “drunk as a peach orchard boar”?
Never heard that but I know what it means now. 😂😂
The best way to breed sows and gilts is naturally with a boar
My cousin inseminated a big ones and he got arrested
Use a boar 🐗 when you're doing heat check and while doing AI they'll relax easier and suck the semen up quicker
Yep. We are going to go to using a boar when they get old enough. Thanks for watching
