Meh, John along with George, always flew off the deep end with "new" things. The Beach Boys actually described John and George arriving to their hotel to "forcefully proselytize" for the Maharishi, while Paul, as with drugs, was a bit more grounded, less likely to go overboard...and wary. So perhaps this is just an embarrassed John realizing that after running around proclaiming to everyone how amazing the Maha was, he just wasn't "all that" and needed some walking back.

In the United States, the Beach Boys were not a big draw at all in 1968. They went from Pet Sounds and Good Vibrations in 1966 to being unpopular by the end of 1967. In the UK, it was a different story, as they were huge from 65-70.

@@truthtransistorradio6716 True; the abortion of the "Smile" album and not playing at the Monterey pop festival in 1967 helped to kill their popularity, and fashions changed quickly in those days. They drew just 200 fans to a concert in New York in 1968, and played at the Corn Palace in Mitchell, South Dakota in 1969. The "Friends" album, released in the spring of 1968, reached only #126 in the Billboard chart, and "Stack-o-Tracks," released a few months later, didn't make it into most record stores and failed to chart. In addition to the U.K., where "Do it Again" reached #1, they retained their popularity in other countries such as the Netherlands and Australia. "Cottonfields," ignored in North America, reached #1 in Australia in July 1970.

Ringo and McCartney were the first to leave the Maharishi's ashram, because they were bored about the course's routine, the flies and the poor food.
Lennon and Harrison stayed on, but soon they found out that the Maharishi was a greedy fellow (intent on collecting 25% of the Beatles next album royalties) and that, in spite of supposedly being a celibate monk, he was a shameless philanderer, having made a pass at Mia Farrow (who left the site in a hurry) and doing the same more successfully with another female student, witnessed by John, George and Magic Alex. The next morning Lennon and Harrison met the Yogi. Lennon said: «We're leaving.» Yogi: «But why, boys?» Lennon: «If you are so fucking cosmic, you'll know why...» The Maharishi gave him back a rabid look like "I'll kill you, you bastard!"
A few years ago another one of the Yogi's students and once a time mistress would write a very revelatory autobiographical book about the matter.
On 14 May 1968 at the Americana Hotel press conference, John and Paul were asked about the subject.
JOURNALIST: What are your feelings about the Maharishi?
    JOHN: We made a mistake...
JOURNALIST: Do you mean other people are mistaken too?
JOHN: That it's up to them... He was human, you know... (with a knowing and serious glance that said it all)
JOURNALIST: What do you mean by mistake?
    JOHN: That's all, you know...
PAUL: We thought there was more to him than it was, you know, but... he's human. And for a while we thought that he wasn't. We thought that he was a... (making gestures, meaning that the Yogi might have been special or otherwordly).
More recently, the old Maharishi was interviewed by a "60 Minutes" Australian journalist.
JOURNALIST: They [the Beatles] established you in the world...
MAHARISHI: No, no, forget about it.
    JOURNALIST: No?
MAHARISHI (fuming): Hmm! Forget about it! The Beatles made me popular in the world?... Forget about it!
Lately, people connected to the Maharishi, like Deepak Chopra, are trying to dismiss or even to erase the whole incident, saying that it was the other way around, that it was the Beatles who misbehaved by taking drugs to the ashram and were expelled by the Maharishi when he found out. After Harrison died, Chopra came up with a totally unsubstantiated story that George had asked the Maharishi forgiveness for their rude behaviour! TMer David Lynch even got McCartney and Starr (who, unlike Lennon and Harrison, had not witnessed the Yogi's misdemeanours) to go public about the merits of TM.

The Maharishi promised the visitors at Rishikesh that if they meditated their lives would bloom and blossom. On the contary. The Beatles split up acrimoniously. John Lennon became a heroin addict. Ringo Starr became an alcoholic. George Harrison became a connoisseur of many different drugs and when the Beatles finally finally split Paul McCartney turned to drinking strong spirits. Mike Love, the less said there the better. Donovan has since turned into an egomaniac. Mia Farrow has had fierce and embarrassing family problems. Perhaps a case could be made that practicing TM does more harm than good.
I admire all the Beatles for the great music they made and it can't be denied they had a huge cultural influence. But not all the influence was good.

Meditation is simply a tool it doesn’t sever you form the ties of karma or magically fix all of your interpersonal problems. It’s a tool that also only aids when it’s actually done more often than not especially in the 60s when it was a fad most people would drop it within a month, and I highly doubt Lennon was a disciplined meditator well into his addiction

in New York. When Carson found out about it he went ballistic. He later got control (I'm told) over what happened to the tapes of his
