  • Simulated Flying from KJQF to KCQW, and talking about my Flight sim setup.
A decent home sim is a Great way to stay proficient between your flight lessons.

So I’m a CFI. One thing I would say is to not focus on the VSI or really the instruments in general as much. Use your altimeter mainly to check for climbs or descents. However you should be able to catch it before it shows anything if you use your outside references, specifically how your nose is related to the horizon(you can actually see it move if you are sitting properly). Remember that VSI is on a delay so chasing it is going to put you into some pilot induced neutral dynamic stability.
Trimming in a flight sim is also different from how you would do it in the real world. You can’t feel those control pressures you would be relieving in the yoke or joystick since its not force feedback. What you want to do in a sim is trim, and as you trim slowly relieve the control pressure watching the nose for any pitch changes. However on bumpy days you aren’t really going to be able to set a trim and go, you’ll have to actively fly through it.
I totally agree though that vr flight simming is vastly superior to the screen sims for training. My school has redbird full motion sims, and I’ve been trying to get them to replace at least one of them with a VR sim setup so I can actually practice stuff like visual flying without having them spend so much money in a real airplane.
Also a good tip for approaches is to pick a point(I usually use the numbers on a normal landing) as an aiming point and make sure the numbers aren’t drifting up or down so that you don’t have to rely on the vasis or papis for your glidepath. A little bit high is just energy insurance if your engine were to quit. A low energy approach is where its bad. Also the flaps in the xplane 172(and most sim 172s I’ve seen) seem to always bring the speed down way lower than what I’ve seen using the real thing. I usually keep the flaps up on my approaches because, especially in ground effect, it starts to feel real accurate to the real thing.
    Good luck on your training!

Thanks for your comment! Yea i didnt mean control pressure like trimming a real plane, but for my honeycomb yoke you can feel how much ur pushing or pulling the yoke to keep the nose level so i try to trim that out but like you said if the air is squirelly the plane will be too. And yea the sim has actually helped my landings alot. I LOVE floating in ground effect, alot of ppl hate floating, i like going to idle near the numbers and playing the will it make it to the bars game, keeps my landings smooth and on point.

    What sim is this?

Turns out i simply wrote my times down in the wrong places and mixed up the 2 waypoints with the 2 minute differences.

I'm struggling as I want to use my IRL kneeboard/chart/PLOG but I want to use VR for flying the plane. Having to lift the headset up to look at the kneeboard is a bit of a pain.
How are you managing to see the bit or paper/your phone IRL without lifting the VR headset up??

I hate that too, Generally ill look down through the nose hole with one eye, the way the quest sits on my face i can see pretty well through the nose gap if i try hard enough. other than that you may be able to turn on double tap for pass thru. im on quest 3 now so i cant remember if the other headsets have that feature. That way you can switch from the sim to just seeing real life with the cameras in the headset. Other than that Ive just been doing hard memorization and setting up my radios and nav/gps really well before takeoff, im using it for IFR training now.
Also thanks for the comment, channel isnt dead lol flyings just expensive as im sure you know.

@@BoringFlightVids Nice! I'm about 60% through my LAPL training, so a long way off of IFR. Hope it's going well! And congrats on passing your PPL!!
How's the clarity of the quest 3 for real world stuff? The pass through on quest 2 wouldn't be good enough for me to read the map and my notes tbh. I also would really appreciate colour haha
