Really loved hearing your story and experience with the game. Pokemon Crystal was my first Pokemon game too and I absolutely fell in love with it. definitely team totodile though
I grew up with the original gen 1 games, but I had more fond memories with gen 2 ^^ I remember being so excited to have Chikorita as my starter and discovering things along the journey with my cute team. Being one of the few girls in the playground with Pokémon Silver when it released, I sure had to defend myself in battle with other kids that my team was cute AND strong! No one would believe me until I showed them my game file that I found and caught a wild Shiny Pidgeotto while training east of Azalea Town. The shiny sound effect first scared me and I remember looking at it for the longest time, confused on why the colors were slightly different. Back then we thought Gyrados was the one shiny in-game! Lots of awesome memories with Silver and sad that the file has been long gone (lost my first legit shiny too). But the memories are there :3 I enjoyed hearing your unique experience with Crystal. That game also has a soft spot in my heart.

Also, FIRE STARTERS RISE UP! Gen 2 is the best. I remember in elementary school my friends and I all sharing our secret techniques for catching pokemon; we all believed either spamming A, B or pressing them at specific times and intervals affected catch rate.
