Amazfit BIP: A $150 Smartwatch That Actually Costs $60?

- Are you on a hunt for a slightly more advanced fitness band, or are done with those overpriced smartwatches? If you said yes to either, then the Amazfit BIP might be what you're looking for.
It's not perfect by any means, but for majority of my needs, it does its job with aplomb. If you're concerned about accuracy (as you should), I've found that for about 80-85% of the time, the data this watch collects is pretty spot on.
I know, I know, Amazfit is already launching newer watches, but the BIP is still their stalwart model. Even though it's the cheapest product in their line-up, the BIP was over-engineered from the start, therefore benefits from tons of features for about $50-60. More power to the buyers, then!
I've had this for four months now, taken it to its fair share of mountains, snow, and hot tubs, so these are my thoughts. Check it out!

I'm a very happy user of this smartwatch. I'm using it for about 2 weeks, battery is around 70%. I recommend this watch to anyone who is sports active and who isn't :) it's great looking, it's very light and has multiple options :)

BTW, how do you rate the sleep tracking? That's very important to me. I've got a nearly 3-year-old Fitbit that I'm keeping alive because it does sleep tracking fairly well (and automatically), and because most of the modern alternatives are crazy exorcise l expensive
Pretty accurate. I don't need precise numbers, just accurate enough readings to figure out my patterns.

Love this watch. I am a watch guy, got 13 watches so far. Always was skeptical of these smart watches especially with the bad battery. So glad i got the bip though.

Thanks for the kind words! I've not had issues swimming with it. I wouldn't use it in salt water, however. Also know that it won't track properly while swimming (laps), as it wasn't made for this purpose.

I use an Android, but I do know that the iOS app is on par with Android's. Sync is pretty on point, even quickly updating your watch's time when you change time zones, among other things.

Hey... does the watch need extra protector on screen. As you are using many days you can tell, do you have any scratch on the screen?
No protector needed - save your money! Unless you're rough with your watches.
Thanks for the review and your thoughts on using the Bip near water (shower, pool, etc). I sat for a few minutes debating a purchase between the Cor and the Bip, but now i'm confident I made the best choice among the two. I'm looking forward to getting my Bip next week.

I second everything this guy said.. Never was a fan of watches and never had one.. But this little gadget is awesome! Hundreds of watchfaces to choose from with various 3rd party apps. Even apps that can make your button control different things on your phone like music while your phone is in your pocket or backpack. Great outdoor visibility, plenty of data to look into, stand alone GPS..

which apps would you recommend? especially for the music control. I ordered mine today, and I know notify and fitness is one of the best but I've heard it can drain the phone very fast
Colton Phillips the app is called Mi Bandage. Small but really useful and easy to use. Try it before buying the bigger apps

Sorry if you mentioned this is the video but does it do full notifications. From using a fitbit it only shows a few lines. It would be nice to see all of the message

Pretty everything I mentioned in the video. Battery with continuous HR will be about a few days.

How do you compare this device to the Gear S3? I currently use the Gear S3 and I am considering switching to the Amazfit Bip.
I don't have any personal experience with the S3, but I know it's probably another price range above the BIP, so in terms of the aesthetics, functionality, etc, the S3 might still be your cup of tea. The BIP tops it in battery life, lots of functionality, reliability, and low price.

I like this watch but
my screen still getting burn effect on screen edge. water seal can't really hold for daily wear even i didn't wear during bath as recommend in manual
I like it, got it. It could be more legible, and i wish it was more waterproof for swimming. GPS acquisition is a bit slow, and sometimes I compare it with my phone Moto X4 with Strava app, and there are some slight differences in GPS, sometimes a 10% difference. Notify&Fitness app is worth the price, although interface is not as clean as MiFIt. I think I get more accurate sleep data with N&F than with MiFit. For the price I am happy. There could be improvements. I had bought a Garmin Vivosmart HR+, but it is way chunkier and needs to be charged everyday. Although rated water resistant for swimming. I am selling the Garmin and keeping the Bip.

Any way to hack 12h watch faces for the default option that comes with the watch? It's stuck in 24h and Huami states it can't be changed in their FAQs. No date is given when the change might happen. Thanks for the review!
Not sure what you mean... Can you describe a little more about what you're experiencing? Watch stuck in 24-hour?
If it's anything like the mi band 2 then it's what ever your phone is set to

Only thing I'm missing with my Amazfit Bip is the calorie count and workout recognition. I spend 2 hours in the gym working my ass off on crossfit, mma, trx and weight lifting and all i get is 200 calories WTF? I really wish there was a way to at least manually add those workouts to the daily activity and have a global calorie count not just active calories... If anyone has a solution please share. thanks

Does the sleep track naps (half hour and over) or broken up sleep? Also was curious if you can see multiple Whatsapp messages in their entirety, or just a preview of the first msg? Thanks
Nope, it doesn't track naps. Curiously, the MiFit Band 2 (and I'm sure, 3) do. The watch previews each message sent, but not in it's entirety.
Whats the different between the Notify & Fitness for Mi Fit & Notify & Fitness for Amazfit ?

I compared with a couple of other HR bands as well as taken manually, and found that the BIP is pretty accurate ±5 bpm.

You are correct, replying is reserved for higher end devices, usually, but also have to be built-in by the engineers in the first place. Thanks for the comments - my thought is although I take longer than usual to review a new device, I try to make my analysis as detailed as possible, while not boring the general viewer.

Thanks for dropping in, Rino! I'd love to test the Verge, but it's clearly between the BIP and the Stratos in the Amazfit catalog. I think they are a few key things Amazfit blundered with the Verge, but first I'd have to get my hands on them. I think TicWatch S & E would be in the same class here.

Excellent review - that got you a like and a subscribe from me. Rocking my Amazfit Bip for 3 weeks now, and I am very happy with it. Way better than my Xiaomi MiBand 2 and 3 - now I can easily read the display outdoors...in fact, the brighter the sunlight the easier to read. No so with my Miband 2 or 3...

I don't think so. Only Strava, Google Fit, and Myfitnesspal, as far as I know, through the MI Fit and Notify and Fitness for MI Fit/Amazfit apps.

I finally got my watch and been using it for a week now and I m very happy with it. I also changed the watch face to a custom watch face but my only grip is, in order to change the watch faces I needed to use an android device because iOS won’t support or have that specific app. If you find a tutorial for iOS device please let us know. Does the heart rate working well?Because before this I have Mi Band 2 but the hr not working with dark skin.
There's a slightly better (and larger) sensor, as well as algorithm in the BIP, but depending on how dark your complexion is, the light might not be able to penetrate still. This is not a medical oximeter, after all.

Your video was helpful, for sure, but can you direct me to a video that shows me how to set up the special features? You can enable email and SMS notifications, but there's no support for music info.

I was interested until I saw it had charging pins. My Samsung Gear Fit 2 charging pins corroded away and no longer charge - out of warranty. That puts me off using watches with those damn pins....
Is pin corrosion common with Gear Fit 2s?
GearUP-Go! There are quite a few people complaining of it on the forums, it appears to be how acidic your personal sweat is. What I don't know it's if it's just Samsung, or all charging pins of this sort.
If it helps, I work out everyday and haven't run into or seen sweat corrosion. Maybe my sweat is sweet. Ha-ha!

You're, in a way, right about warranty being a toss up. Where do live? If you're in a country that's supported by Amazfit (which is an ever-growing number), the service is pretty bang on.
I just wish it wasn't so small. The strap is also horrible.
A larger stainless steel version would be awesome, unfortunately looking like the ugly and bland Apple Watch is a MASSIVE downside for me.
