I had this lens. I agree it's awesome. Rokinon recently came out with an auto focus version of this lens. It's just as awesome and gives you the additional freedom of easy hand held photography. It's about double the cost of this one but still MUCH cheaper than the Canon equivalent
I just scored one of these off Ebay for $150. Seems to be OK after just some test shots. I've gotten into shooting time-lapses of sky and clouds, and this should work great for me. It does have a weird, uneven barrel distortion, but PS camera raw has a correction profile for it that straightens it out perfectly, along with the vignetting.
Christopher Frost reviewed the samyang 14mm 2.8 (to my knowledge they're the same lens with different branding) and his test showed CRAZY barrel distortion.
Is it worth buying this if you buy the Tokina 11 - 16 or the 11 - 20, as the Tokina ones are still f2.8 and you're covering more range of focal length with those. I was originally going to buy the Rokinon 14mm, but then so many people swear by the Tokina wide angle lenses and although they cost more, you get a range of focal length for your money.
Have you tried this lens an analogue camera? I found I left it in my bag more and more when doing digital landscapes, but I've fallen in love with it all over again when using black and white 35mm film.
I have it. Not really sharp until f5.6 As usual samyang /rokinon vary quality from lens to lens. So make sure you check yours and send it back if it's a bad one. (They don't do proper quality control) It's ok. Wouldn't rave about it but ok for the £$
That are your thoughts on the 14mm Samyang/Rokinon against the 12mm f2.8 Samyang/Rokinon. Is there major differences in the glass? I see there are more reviews on the 14mm? Ian Tempany
I already have the 8mm f3.5 fisheye lens for my T5i. I got it only because I wanted a "fisheye", but now that I see what you can do with a wide angle lens and the stars, would it be wise, in your opinion, to get another lens like this one or no? I liking the price and the f2.8, but would I be able to get the same results with my 8mm?
thank you for that mate , don't know if you experimented with this but interested in buying this for my camera ,1 for stars. I like photography, and that's some lovely pics you have. But for 2nd, I've started making fishing videos and a lot of the filming I want to do with it will be at night, never intended making or using my cannon for filming just wondering weather this would also aid the issues I'm having with it, kind regards Shaun
hi, i just got same lens, for the sony E mount. ,. i have two questions:? - wheres the sweet spot for infinity focus? for stars. n what is the sweet spot for aperture? thank you
Hello from Peru! Excellent video! I've got just one extra question: Does the camera recognize the F stop? and if not, how do I control my exposure balance? Thank you! Greetings!
hi, great video. I just bought the rokinon 12mm, seeing how the 14mm works but I don't want/have the money to spend on lens. can you give me you lens settings for those night/stars pictures.
I recently purchased this lens thru amazon, could you please advice me what is your focus point when shooting the stars? this is what i want to know using this lens to figure where is my focus point. I am using pentax k-3, thanks a lot!
Wow! Great work! Try normalizing your audio. This video is very quiet compared to the rest. Does this lens have an auto correct profile in Lightroom or Adobe RAW? I need something like this for interior work in real estate photography.
I use it for star and real estate photography it works great for it. I dont know about correct profile. if you go to daviddisponett.com you can see how the pictures come out for my real estate photography.
+Tyr Anasazi If you have a cropped sensor camera, the 11-16 Tokina would be a much better choice. I have one and it is a great, sturdy, sharp, lens. For full frame cameras you can only use about 15-16mm part of it's range, at best. It is not designed for them.
+Media Unlocked haha you still didn't answer the question. But it's cool. I did the research and it is actually a full frame lens. That's why it's able to work on crop sensor as well.
Hi, i own a croped Canon camera (eos 750D) and i am thinking of buy this lens for my astrophotography shoots. I am seeing many people complaining about huge barrel distorion this lens has. Have you tried this lens on a croped sensor camera?
does someone have a problem with this lens? i mean i heard that some had problem with couting? i would love to buy this lens but some people are reporting problems about that lens
This particular lens is wonderful on crop sensors. Realize however, the aperture is also affected as much as focal length. Meaning, on a crop sensor, this is a 21mm lens with an aperture of 4.2
Dao Quang Nope, sorry. A smaller sensor has less area for the light to fall upon. Focal increase is offset by aperture. There isn't any free lunch unfortunately. A 1.4 lens on a FF is a 2.0 on a crop, and so on.
Robert Komarek the amount of light going through the lens will be the same. The difference is the fullframe sensor is bigger so it catches light better and bigger sensor means better low light performance, that's it. The bokeh will be affected too, though.
Dao Quang I should clarify. A 1.4 on a FF will be the equivalent of a 2.0 on a crop. The bigger sensor has more area to catch light, which affects the aperture. If you and I are standing next to each other, and you have a FF and I have a crop, your pic will be 1 stop brighter is we use the same settings.
how easy it to focus on people with this lens - say i keep it as f2.8 -- iv just always grown up with autofocus that, doing it manually without having a 2nd chance worries me.
My experience with this lens on a SONY Alpha 77II and SONY Alpha 57 was disappointing. Due to SONY's failure indications "No Lens" I got no view at the motive. This lens ist incompatible with SONY SLT (A-Mount) cameras!
What people dont tell you about this lens, awful distortion and corners, "sharp" from 5.6 till f11. Hard to focus and very long. Infinity is at 1m not at the infinity mark. Been wanting this lens since 2016 and now when I finally got it it so bad... The quality control is really bad :/
Chromatic Abrasion?! Is that like when your Chroma rubs against your skin leaving a green or magenta hue? lol ... I think aberration was the word you were searching for mate. ;-)
Not trying to be rude, but when I hear "the biggest draw back is that it's manual", I face palm myself.. The sharpest images come out of manual focusing. Zeiss lenses, many of them manual only, produce the sharpest images from edge to edge. Auto focus is what has some major draw backs! Manual is for pro's.
Why would manual lens be sharper than an autofocus lens? An autofocus lens just has a motor, but optically they can be the same. Of course sometimes you get back/frontfocus and you need to calibrate your camera/lens to get the best autofocus result. But I personally only focus manually :D
Don't buy this lens! There are too many of them has the issue with focusing. The focus mark doesn't match at all. Some ppl's copy focuses to infinity at 3m, some at 1m, my copy at 0.7m and when you rotate it to different way, the stop points is changes. Absolutely disappointed
I had this lens. I agree it's awesome.
Rokinon recently came out with an auto focus version of this lens. It's just as awesome and gives you the additional freedom of easy hand held photography. It's about double the cost of this one but still MUCH cheaper than the Canon equivalent
I grabbed one recently for Milky Way core photography, first session planned next month. Really looking forward to seeing how it does!
Had the 8mm for my crop but sold it because I upgraded to a full frame. Definitely getting this as soon as I can afford it.
It's a nice lens. I have an older one for my Pentax K-5II and K10D. Old cameras but still quite good.
I just scored one of these off Ebay for $150. Seems to be OK after just some test shots. I've gotten into shooting time-lapses of sky and clouds, and this should work great for me. Mine has very little and almost zero after I do lens correction in Lightroom.
I guess lightroom has a lens profile for this lens, does it?
@@thejjzzable It does yes
It has "moustache" shaped distortion which is quite bad out of camera to be honest. The lightroom profile however is excellent and corrects it.
Just picked one up! Looking forward to checking it out on my 80D!
Did the chromatic fall and suffer an Abrasion?
I found a lens correction profile to add to LightRoom and it takes care of the distortion issues quite well
can you send me the link for the correction profile?
I bought the samy 14mm 2.8 new 310€..test shots show me razor sharp results...btw on my d810 fstops can change from camera
Just ordered one from B&H,hope to find it really good for night landscape/astrophotography..
I upgraded to the af version I love it.
@@MediaUnlocked hello, would you really need AF for that ultra wide angle? I'm still considering whether to get the MF mk2 or the AF version. Cheers!
Is it worth buying this if you buy the Tokina 11 - 16 or the 11 - 20, as the Tokina ones are still f2.8 and you're covering more range of focal length with those. Good stuff. Do you mean "Chromatic Aberration"?
That time lapse was SICK!
Yes lol
Just got it new for $290 Canadian...unbeatable 14mm f2.8 at that price, especially seeing how it's one of the sharpest 14mm lenses money can buy!
from where?
Probably grey-market sellers
NᴏᴠɪᴄᴇIɴDɪsɢᴜɪsᴇ It was directly from amazon with a warranty, not that I needed it too much at that price.
amazing lens
I have it. Not really sharp until f5.6
As usual samyang /rokinon vary quality from lens to lens. So make sure you check yours and send it back if it's a bad one.
(They don't do proper quality control)
It's ok. Wouldn't rave about it but ok for the £$
Hi, I am Melissa. Did you had to do a focus calibration or something? What do you say about its infinite focus? Thanks!
The focus is manuel you use infinite focus for stars or subjects far way.
Please I would like to ask. Is this lens a Cine Lens and full frame?
That are your thoughts on the 14mm Samyang/Rokinon against the 12mm f2.8 Samyang/Rokinon. Is there major differences in the glass? I see there are more reviews on the 14mm?

Wish you could screw some ND filters onto it or a polarizing lens.
with a 3d printer you cacn easily print a mount for lee / cokin filters...
Excellent Timelapse. Grat Job
thanks
Enjoyed the review. I think Im really going to enjoy this lens
I have a canon 80D aps-c camera, should i get the rokinon 12mm f/2.0 instead? at some point I will get a full framed camera like the 5d mark 4
Nevermind. Looks like the 12mm 2.0 is for canon M mount, wont work on the 80D
How is this for a cropped sensor? I"m hoping to go to a FF at the end of the year however I'm looking at this vs the Tokina 11-16mm
It works fine I love this lens so much.

+shaun lewis you will need an external light to shoot video at night
For chromatic abrasions it puts the lotion in the basket...
😂😂😂
Beautiful night shots! Keep up the good work.
Thanks so much
Thanks for honest information...cool video....thank you..
happy to help
hi, i just got same lens, for the sony E mount. ,. i have two questions:?
- wheres the sweet spot for infinity focus? for stars.
n what is the sweet spot for aperture?
thank you
Ali Arenas I don't do astrophotography, but I find the sweet spot for landscape, with a strong foreground, to be f11 for front to back focus.
The infinity is a little different for each lens. I use a piece of tape to know where mine is. F8 for me on mine.
Hello from Peru!
Excellent video! I've got just one extra question: Does the camera recognize the F stop? and if not, how do I control my exposure balance?
Thank you! Greetings!
You change it on the lens manually.
Nice been thinking about getting this for some video work
it is amazing
Do you mind sharing your settings on the lens and camera when taking astrophotography shots?
F2.8 Iso 2800-4000 shutter 22-30 seconds WB around 3300
You need to create a link so I can buy the lens through amazon for my Sony A7III
Just click the link and navigate to the lens you want it should help.
So when using it, you work in Manual mode or AV mode? I understand we set F in the lens. :)
hi, great video. I just bought the rokinon 12mm, seeing how the 14mm works but I don't want/have the money to spend on lens. can you give me you lens settings for those night/stars pictures.
Iso at least 3200 f2.8 shutter 30sec WB 3200k
I am looking to buy this lens, would you recommend it as my first prime/fixed lens? and where were some of those star pictures taken?
+Jennings Kentucky,Wisconsin,Montana it is a great prime lens if you need wide angle and want to shoot stars
Thanks for the video ,i have a question you put the lens infinity mark wide open for sharpness?
It depends each lens is a little different.
Media Unlocked this lens the rokinon?
Yes
I recently purchased this lens thru amazon, could you please advice me what is your focus point when shooting the stars? this is what i want to know using this lens to figure where is my focus point. I am using pentax k-3, thanks a lot!
It is different every lens sorry. I am around the infinity sign
Is it better to use a 12 or 14mm lens for interiors which are about 5x8 m minimum in plan?
i like the 14mm
Wow! Great work!
Try normalizing your audio. This video is very quiet compared to the rest.
Does this lens have an auto correct profile in Lightroom or Adobe RAW?
I need something like this for interior work in real estate photography.
I do not know if it does but when editing in LR it works fine. I use it for real estate all the time.
+Media Unlocked cool! At that price it's a steal!
I use it for star and real estate photography it works great for it. I dont know about correct profile. if you go to daviddisponett.com you can see how the pictures come out for my real estate photography.
So every few hundred have a sharpen image issue from what I know. I would send it back and get another one.
Hi. Do you have the Tokina 11-16 f2.8? If you do, can you do a comparison? Thank you for the video.
+Tyr Anasazi I do not if I did I would make a video.
+Tyr Anasazi If you have a cropped sensor camera, the 11-16 Tokina would be a much better choice. I have one and it is a great, sturdy, sharp, lens. For full frame cameras you can only use about 15-16mm part of it's range, at best. It is not designed for them.
+Larry L Thanks for the feedback Larry. I appreciate it.
Many people claim that they went through many copies in order to get a good one, It was your case too or just the first and only one copy was ok?
Can i use this as a wide face cam for my stream?
It should work
Very helpful review. You used this lens on FF or DX body?
thanks
I'd love to get this lens, but since I want to use it for stars AND daytime long exposures, it's such a bummer this doesnt have a filter thread...

hi! Is this lens good only for stars? What about landscapes?
It is great for both.
Hi. I'm using canon 6d, should I buy this lens or Irix lens 15mm f2.4.
I love this lens
Is there any important difference between this Rokinon and the Samyang one?
To be honest no
Do you think it would work well for Real Estate images inside a home?
+Stephen Schuda Yes I use it all the time for real estate pictures
I spy a Harpoon Brewery sticker. You originally from Boston or are you just a fan? Cheers.

hey, which one should i get for my canon 6d?? there are 2 models canon and canon AE. thanks in advance :)
+samer younis canoon ae

Yes it will. How ever you have a crop sensor.
what would it be like on a crop sensor Pentax k5

I bought this for my canon t5 will it work on it?
Yes
Works on my T2I and t7i should work with any canon!
ohwoahsav I believe they don’t work on the d series, seen many reviews of not being able to work on the 5d mark series
aiden are u sure ?
i hav 5d mark ii and could work on it or not ??
