When Lancia dropped out of F1 after the '55 season with the death of their lead driver, Alberto Ascari, they donated their outstanding. D50 cars to Ferrari who gladly accepted them when he realized his own cars were noncompetitive. That was the only year Fangio drove for Ferrari because of the withdrawal of Mercedes propagated by the LeMans tragedy. He won his fourth world championship that year with D50 renamed the 258 by Ferrari.
Mercedes Benz didn't withdraw from motorsport because of the Le Mans tragedy. It was already decided by the board of directors of M-B to withdraw once they won the Championships in 1955...
