@Ricardo Jaye yes, they (sisters) had sold all of their belongings and given the proceeds to Jim. They were both convinced him Jones had cured them. They had a photo of him they'd pray to. It's crazy because he had so MANY people believing this. Like how the hell did he fool so many.

The sense of impending doom is palpable in their demeanor through watching the video. It’s heartbreaking to watch. Congressman Leo Ryan is a true American Hero, he tried so hard to save them.
@@omgIoIwtf He ordered Jim to allow anybody who wanted to leave to leave with him and his entourage to prove that the rumor's of people being held against their will in the commune were false. Jim allowed this and several people (some seen in the footage) took the offer to leave. Jim knew that if they left they would tell the congressman and the American public what was really going on and the US government would likely order the arrest of Jim. Jim couldn't allow that to happen as he was addicted to the power he had over the commune so he ordered his most loyal members to kill everybody at the airport (shows how crazy Jim had become thinking that this would make sense) and use the action to tell his followers that their time was up and it was time to die on their own terms rather than whatever awaited them. From that sense what Senator Ryan did was heroic but misguided.
The cameraman wasn't "just sitting" on the ground. He was lying down because he had already gotten shot, but was still trying to film. The second bullet ended his life.
"People do not knowingly join cults... People join self-help groups, churches, political movements, college campus dinner socials, and the like, in an effort to be a part of something larger than themselves." - Deborah Layton, one of the survivors. You probably won't know when you're joining a cult. Everybody is susceptible to it; believing you are not susceptible (i.e. by believing you're an "independent thinker") only makes you more vulnerable. We have cognitive biases that make falling into a cult easier, and escaping them harder; usually, such as in Jonestown, the cult leader(s) take advantages of those biases. I'm confident at least most of the people who joined this felt they too were thinking for themselves. And that doesn't make them fools. It makes Jim Jones an exploitative manipulator.
People that join cults are people with troubles. Financially, socially, all the -llys. The people most likely to avoid a cult are actually regular people with stable jobs and families.

I grew up in San Francisco as a very young child and my mom who was a white Midwesterner married to a black man loved Peoples Temple and talked my dad who was always very suspicious of religion into attending services one Sunday. They locked the church doors and Jones ranted for over three hours about capitalism being satanic and Marxism being good. Nobody was allowed to get up to use the toilet. If you coughed or made noise they glared at you. After we left, my dad said none of us are ever coming here again. My mom just nodded. We never did and about a year later (maybe two, it's been a long time and I was only four or five years old) I saw many of the adults and kids I met that day dead on the news.
I worked with a guy who was a cook at a restaurant in Burlingame in the mid 80's. Jonestown came up up at one point, and he non-chalantly said, almost as an aside, "Yeah, I was scheduled to go to Jonestown the following week" Like, he wasn't even phased by his near miss. His mom was apparently very into the Temple. He'd met Jones many times. Crazy....

So much comes to mind. If they had left 2-5 minutes earlier this probably wouldn't have happened. Also the fact that this footage survived, I'm surprised the guys didn't try to destroy it (or probably thought it was a film camera), but they were SOOOO close
Jones' original order was for his plant 'defector' to shoot the pilot once the plane was in the air so all onboard would be killed. However due to the addition of the defectors, the original plane did not have enough seats so another was called to the airstrip.
One of the defectors was actually faking it and Jim Jones had planned that when the plane would get into the air the person faking it would shoot the pilot and they would all die anyway. It one of the first thing Jim Jones tells his followers in the audio tape.

I'd say he was a bit naive (but absolutely having his heart in the right place, this following text is criticism about how he went about it, and not the noble intentions), the moment he saw people carrying guns, he should have went for even heavier de-escalation. When you go into someone elses place, and the power dynamic is different, you don't stroll in like some fucking king making demands and shit, you need a far better diplomatic mind. It does not matter if you have the best equipped and largest army on earth behind you, you will fucking die if you don't show enough respect and consideration for the situation you are in. There's no way USA can back you up in the 5 minutes before you get turned into swiss cheese once Jim's thugs came to the airplane to start shooting. Infact I think it shouldn't have started out from a investigation mindset and confrontational. He was well aware of the reports of Jim Jones being a looney bin canditate. Confronting such a person with a bunch of demands and implying that the US government will come do a raid is naivety. He could have visited under way more friendly pretexts in order to scout the place out, and then called in a raid. This is something I try to teach people when I get into a discussion about bicycles and cars on the road, In my country, the bicyclist is counted as a unprotected class, what this means in a nutshell is that you as the car driver have a bigger responsibility and will get more serious charges thrown at you, this does not make the bicyclist immune, as they will probably still be fined. HOWEVER, even if you as the bicyclist have better legal protection etc, that matters fuck all if you are dead! You are not getting compensation, because how can you pay compensation to a corpse? This is why you should not be naive, arrogant and THINK. Look both ways, don't be lazy and break traffic laws etc. I'd argue that Mr Ryan failed at his job. Not only did this confrontational style get himself and others near the plane killed, but it fueled Mr Jones's delusions, making for the biggest number of darwin award winners in a single scenario. Like I said, heart in the right place, but it's a arrogant shit execution with extreme naivety. This is IRL people, you don't get a do over and respawn.

Shannon McCarthy Larry Layton was actually running to the other side of the Cessna to board the plane after he was frisked. If any of the defectors saw him going to the tractor, there would have been immediate scrambling as they already knew he was lying about defecting. Tim Reiterman describes this whole scene in his book

You can see the Peoples Temple folks conspiring as tractor rolls up in background, then they return to tractor, also see dump truck in background too. Later footage shows them holding guns and walking around the passengers and airplane before opening fire. At the very end you can clearly hear a man say no. Most likely the cameraman who was killed. After the initial shots, the shooters walked around and shot them all again. A few who were shot managed to run into the jungle, including Leo Ryans' personal assistant. She said she was saved by Guyanese rum. I think they found a family who let them in.
You refer to Jackie Speier, who didn’t get anywhere near the jungle. She was shot five times, and was so badly wounded she nearly lost her right arm and her right leg. She still carries two bullets in her. She and three other severely injured people (Vern Gosney, NBC sound man Steve Sung and Anthony Katsaris) were cared for by Guyanese locals and anesthetized by potent Guyanese rum. In 2008, Speier was elected to the Congressional seat formerly occupied by her mentor Leo Ryan. She is retiring this year after seven terms in Congress.
He should’ve brought the military with him to Jonestown. Would’ve been called Operation:Jonestown rescue and then jonestown security guards would’ve been too scared to do anything 😂
Tough to watch all those doomed people. I read a book by one of the only people to live through this and escape 4 weeks before the massacre. Deborah Layton described her entire ordeal from her beginnings with The People's Temple in California to moving to Guyana and having to leave her mother and brother still there. Her brother, Larry, was convicted for his role in Congressman Ryan's murder. After reading this book, Seductive Poison, it made me a lot less judgemental toward how so many people became brainwashed and controlled by fear. I read the book about a year before Covid, so I instantly started seeing the similarities in how herd mentality takes over and replaces rational, independent thinking. Bless all these poor souls. The more I watch it, the more I’m convinced there were 6 shooters on the tractor. 4 came over to talk to the defectors (3 at first, then 1 more in a white tank top)and as the tractor pulls next to the Cessna, you can clearly see 2 more in the back. 6 total if you count the driver (who I believe you can see behind the shooters as they start shooting). 8 total if you count Larry Layton. These are just my observations and am always interested in other observations. Also, I only see 2 white guys (the driver and the one in the orange/tan shirt). I understand they are Tom Kice and Stanley Gieg. The witnesses also mentioned Bob Kice, Wesley Breidenbach, and Al Touchette but i couldn’t see anybody else. I’m sure the video was spliced and there’s much more that we’re not seeing but I even wonder if all the temple members on the truck even were shooting. Some questions will never have answers
cscamby0410 If you've seen this before, I apologize in advance. I stumbled across this video on accident. At the 6:35 mark, this video shows (and circles) all the assassins we've been discussing. I'd say we're on the right track: th-cam.com/video/xRGtGmPMGJ8/w-d-xo.html
C.R. I just watched. I’d say those white guys were definitely Tom and Bob Kice. Interestingly, Breidenbach isn’t shown, so maybe he wasn’t one of them. Al Touchette must’ve been hidden somewhere because I didn’t see him once in the entire hour long nbc footage either. I wonder who the tall guy walking past Tom and Bob Kice was? Also, the first assassin they showed? Any ideas? Finally, I’m surprised they left the guy in Khakis out...he was so obviously involved. BTW, the mysterious dark skinned one who circles the back of the plane and is dressed similarly to a constable...no idea but Jim Cobb identified him as a Temple member. Thank you for sharing more info!
C.R. Good observations...so Ronnie Dennis was a tall kid (16?) I can’t find a picture of Ernest Jones but I see he was in his mid 50’s. Maybe Ronald James in the Khakis?
C.R. Exactly...there has to be more footage somewhere...I’m even at the point of freezing each shot of that tractor to hope for more angles. There are so many splices it’s hard to know who was on that tractor. Also, Steve Sung said the dump truck pulled up with shooters too. He said there were people hidden in the back. You’re right, we may never know but I’m going to keep looking.
C.R. I just noticed again. If you look to the left of who we think might be Ronnie Dennis (maroon shirt), it looks like Eddie Hallmon (the same as clip number 8). Same parka and hat and I'd bet its him. I've resolved myself to not knowing for sure who the guy in khakis is, but there's another guy in a sleeveless shirt who approaches the 3 at the airstrip as the tractor approaches. There's no way to know for sure, but any guesses on this guy?
At about the 1:00 mark, you see a guy with white pants and a green poncho walk around the back of the small plane and meet up with another man who came from the red tractor-trailer. The guy in the white pants is Larry Layton. I’m certain that this is the moment when he received the pistol from one of the Temple assassins and stashed it aboard the plane. That’s why Ryan didn’t find the gun when he frisked Layton - it was already on the airplane.
I don’t think I would have waited out there. I’d run in the jungle as fast as I could until I found the next town. I don’t know, based off of what survivors have said. They knew that they had little time before they came after them.
Leo Ryan should have waited until he re entered the United States to present the letter that he received that was one costly mistake which unfortunately cost him and many others their lives.
There's a fire line between Jim Jones and a multitude of preachers who say god talks to them and tells them what's right and wrong. Besides, they are all lying to you.

This is actually good quality, thanks for posting this! Great historical footage. BTW, was this recorded on normal videotape or VHS/Betamax by NBC? EDIT 04/20/2022: I have all the technical details about this recording now thanks to a new Dateline NBC episode. Bob Brown (the cameraman) was using an RCA TK-76 video camera. If you want super detailed info this camera used Plumbicon tubes (vacuum tubes) for the image sensor instead of modern day solid-state sensors like CCDs. The TK-76 was a very popular camera in the late 1970s for news broadcasting - Shelley Fielman had a TK-76 when he worked for NBC and captured the Reagan assassination attempt in 1981. All video cameras at the time did not have a built-in recorder to capture footage, so an umbilical cord was used to connect the TK-76 camera to an external video tape recorder, or VTR. The exact VTR used was a Sony BVU-50 portable U-Matic VTR. The VTR was operated by Steven Sung, the soundman who also carried an external microphone. So Brown and Sung were basically tethered together in order to record footage with sound. Now, the portable version of the U-Matic format could only hold about 20 minutes per tape, so Sung would have had to put in a new tape every 20 minutes or so. The normal full-sized U-Matic tapes could hold a full hour of video, but they were never used in the field like you see here. If you are interested, U-Matic was the predecessor to the Betamax format. It was too expensive for regular consumers to buy, so Sony began marketing it to professionals and broadcasters. I do think this is the raw unedited tape. It is most likely a dub of the master tape but I think nothing has been left out. As for why the recording ends I am not sure. I first thought that Sung had started to run for his life while Brown lay wounded, and that the cord was yanked or damaged somehow which would break the connection between the camera and the recorder. The camera is powered from the VTR so if the connection was broken the camera would instantly power off. But Sung apparently was under Brown and stayed there until the shooters left. My only theory is that Sung dropped the recorder and it broke. This is why you don't see the camera itself dropping or getting destroyed, because it was connected externally to a recorder. For anyone who is curious, the TK-76 and the U-Matic recorder are on display at NBC headquarters in New York. I have not seen it in person. I have no idea if the camera or recorder was damaged during the shooting. It looks fine in the footage of the camera on display.
Could be regular celluloid film (actually Cellulose acetate film but people still like to call it celluloid) but looks more like betamax. Vhs wasn't that heavily used for professional productions because audio and video quality was inferior to betamax.
This is sad and unexplainable. How they weren't prepared for the attack.. How they were just normal, and happily You can imagine their fear coursing through their body.

Congressman Ryan had defectors from Jonestown in his truck which pissed off Jim Jones. Nobody knows if he ordered the shooting on the landing strip. When the video goes dark is when the cameraman was murdered.
The way it went down. Jones thought it was just going to be one plane. He ordered Larry Layton to shoot the pilot in the head when they were deep over the jungle. After they left Jones learned it was going to be two planes so he sent a whole tractor load of guys to shoot them.

People deleted it so people don’t know the whole truth. I’m no expert but I’m pretty sure the fbi collected all the tapes from Jonestown and I’d imagine they got this too, and probably edited some stuff before releasing it to the public.
@@evanjonez914good point, you would think FBI interference, but also the camera could have been shot as well, only thing we have is eyewitnesses, and they are very unreliable during situations like this
The first segment was B-roll footage. The cameraman filmed it so the studio could later play some video while they were reading out their story. It was never intended to be played unedited like this. The second segment was recorded as the cameraman was being shot. Likely he started the camera in the hopes that it would record useful evidence of what happened. The camera fell to the ground after him, and being an analogue tape system, was fragile to impact or damage. This is why the tape became distorted, and probably why the camera stopped recording all together, assuming it was not shot directly. The tape was recovered from the camera by the Guyanan army, which arrived the next morning to rescue survivors. This video is likely made from the last minutes of tape recorded on that reel.
It’s the fact they’re all watching them unpack knowing what they’re in for but can’t say anything. It makes me just feel so uneasy the way their behavior is watching them get undone but they’re never going to let them go
Apparantly Layton had boarded the plane first and Ryan had called him out for frisking, perhaps he hid the gun in the plane and then recovered it when he boarded it again.
I noticed Dwyer the CIA agent put his arm and patted the congressman then turned away and walked to the pilot. Almost like he knew to get out of the way. Not but 20 secs later the shooting began. Then in the death tape jones yells out "get Dwyer out of here before something happens to him" (the only person who was allowed to leave the pavilion) Everyone else was held at gunpoint or crossbow. As paranoid as Jones was its always troubled me what was up with Dwyer and Jim Jones relationship.
You can see those three black guys in a huddle planning the timing, then they peel off and head for the farm tractor with the trailer where the guns are located
1:22-1:30 you can see 2 men walking from the parked truck across the airstrip to the tractor. So, I believe my first assumption that there were only 6 shooters was wrong. I’m thinking it’s Eddie Crenshaw and either Breidenbach or Touchette. Bob Kice was on the trailer as it pulled up (with Breidenbach or Touchette). Ron James likely in the sleeveless shirt and the 3 who approach first have pretty much been established. Any other observations?
at :57 the three men from the tractor came over and spoke to the black male survivor .it was a brother to brother type of conversation. What did, they talk about? After the talk both black male survivor and black female survivor seemed to be real nervous and kept looking back like they knew something was about to happen.
MrMelgibstein that was Jim Cobb they were talking too. He definitely knew something wasn’t right and tried to warn the police before the shooting started but it was too late. It sounds like Joe Wilson was asking them if they were getting ready to board the plane. As they’re walking back, Cobb calls to Tom Kice twice but was ignored. Cobb was considered an enemy defector and was definitely a target by the assassins. How he escaped death is an anomaly
cscamby0410 ,most definitely an anomaly but Jim Cobbs brother was on Jim Jones security force and was in George Town with the basketball team.So I don't how much Jim Cobb was a target.Jim Cobb would have been the most trusted of the defectors .
MrMelgibstein it would seem that way but back in Jonestown, Jones says that Jim Cobb was killed at the airstrip (on the death tape) and everyone cheers and applauds. Who knows...maybe they purposely didn’t kill him as the media was definitely their main target. There are so many rabbit holes in the story. I spent months identifying the assassins seen in this video and locating them in the nbc footage as well.
cscamby0410 Jones could say whatever he wanted cause he wasnt at the airstrip and I don't see why he was going to say Jim Cobb was still alive and I doubt the shooters would want to admit that they didnt kill Jim Cobb. But I do truly believe the shooters did cut Jim Cobb a break cause he was black and the brother of one they're security people.Sounds stupid ,but I believe they considered him a brother. No black defector was shot at the airstrip.

Going to jonestown was a death sentence. The ones who made it out alive are extremely lucky.

@Ricardo Jaye yes, they (sisters) had sold all of their belongings and given the proceeds to Jim. They were both convinced him Jones had cured them. They had a photo of him they'd pray to. It's crazy because he had so MANY people believing this. Like how the hell did he fool so many.

The fact the camera is just sitting on the ground at the end makes this feel like a horror movie... it really was a real life horror story
NO shit, Sherlock. Except about a hundred times worse.

@@miky9619 People don't have anything better to do with their lives I guess
This is a prime example on why it's good to think for yourself. Be an independent thinker to avoid a cult mentality.
People weren't forced to enter jones town though...

Jones' original order was for his plant 'defector' to shoot the pilot once the plane was in the air so all onboard would be killed. However due to the addition of the defectors, the original plane did not have enough seats so another was called to the airstrip.
They didn't try to destroy it because the next day they would be all dead so it didn't matter (to them)
One of the defectors was actually faking it and Jim Jones had planned that when the plane would get into the air the person faking it would shoot the pilot and they would all die anyway. It one of the first thing Jim Jones tells his followers in the audio tape.
They had a “spy” in their midst who was armed and planning to kill any that he could. Would’ve gone really bad if he pulled that on the plane.

de-escalation.
This is something I try to teach people when I get into a discussion about bicycles and cars on the road, In my country, the bicyclist is counted as a unprotected class,
what this means in a nutshell is that you as the car driver have a bigger responsibility and will get more serious charges thrown at you, this does not make the bicyclist immune, as they will probably still be fined.

I wonder who the tall guy walking past Tom and Bob Kice was? Also, the first assassin they showed? Any ideas? Finally, I’m surprised they left the guy in Khakis out...he was so obviously involved.

C.R. Good observations...so Ronnie Dennis was a tall kid (16?)
I can’t find a picture of Ernest Jones but I see he was in his mid 50’s.
The guy that breaks off from Ryan and goes to shake hands with the pilot is the CIA station agent, according to documentary that Bill Kurtis narrated.
Its maddening to see how slow it took to get everyone on the plane.

Leo Ryan should have waited until he re entered the United States to present the letter that he received that was one costly mistake which unfortunately cost him and many others their lives.
I only wish this was just a reenactment. Unfortunately it's not.
There's a fire line between Jim Jones and a multitude of preachers who say god talks to them and tells them what's right and wrong. Besides, they are all lying to you.
At 2:30 you see Joe Wilson with a rifle watching passengers and the plane. What is he looking for?simple, his wife and son,They escaped early that morning with another family, but they did not head to port kaituma, they were smart ,They headed in the other direction to Mathews Ridge on a train. So you know this guy is frustrated and super pissed. You can see him the night before carrying the baby when the band was playing
MrMelgibstein I just found out that’s not Joe Wilson. Joe has stopped the truck as the passengers were on their way to the airstrip, to look for his wife and child. This guy w the gun and pink shirt is a Guyanese policeman. His gun was taken before the shootings started.
th-cam.com/video/Qm7k2Eq-vD0/w-d-xo.html. Checkout this video at 25:50 of Joe Wilson back at Jonestown earlier in the day.The same man walking around the plane with the rifle. The video shows the shirt kind of pink but its Not. In the NBC raw video, Joe looks nervous talking to Carolyn .I think he realized his wife ran away with his son.She made the right decision.
Vhs wasn't that heavily used for professional productions because audio and video quality was inferior to betamax.
yes but rip the nbc camera man
There was no beta max or vhs in those days
@@jakcarn4184 betamax was released in 1975, vhs in 1976, this took place in 1978

This is sad and unexplainable.
How they weren't prepared for the attack..
How they were just normal, and happily
You can imagine their fear coursing through their body.
They didn't show the entire video.
Man the people that stayed back is just crazy as jim Jones was
That most of them agreed to commit suicide and took their kids with them
I can feel my hair standing
These people had no idea 🤷🏽♀️ what they were getting themselves in to!!! 💀 😭☠️

Sounds like general struggle of being shot at lol
"No"
So symbolic of today’s democrat party.
Absolutely, not much has changed
Hello, We are a small French documentary company making a documentary about JIM JONES. Could we use this footage for our documentary ?
Hpw lucky we are to still be here, while those people lost their whole world. I’m having a school project on this cult, so i hope this will come in handy.
Congressman Ryan had defectors from Jonestown in his truck which pissed off Jim Jones. Nobody knows if he ordered the shooting on the landing strip. When the video goes dark is when the cameraman was murdered.
He did order The Killing before they leave everyone's at the Pavilion you can see Jones talking to some guy
The way it went down. Jones thought it was just going to be one plane. He ordered Larry Layton to shoot the pilot in the head when they were deep over the jungle. After they left Jones learned it was going to be two planes so he sent a whole tractor load of guys to shoot them.
3:01 ¿Dónde puedo encontrar la otra parte de este pedazo que ya están disparando? Osea la parte anterior a estas imágenes
Jim Jones was a big player in San Francisco Democrat party politics. Most of his church members were African American
He also murdered a Democratic Congressman
Considering that this was during the Civil Rights Era, I wonder why.
Legendarios, acuñen!
Congresswoman Jackie Speier was so luck to get out.
If I went at the time and knew they were half crazy I'd have definitely been packing heat myself
Any guns someone had was taken away from them
1:25 you can see Joe Wilson on the left signaling for those Guyanese kids to back up so they could let the choppas sing. I would’ve got the hell out of there as soon as I seen that.
His wife survived Leslie Wagner Wilson she hid in the jungle

So chilling and creepy this is Pure horror murder.😢
@Danny Eric Benavidez you're sick
@Danny Eric Benavidez 300 children died, a congressman sacrificed himself to save innocent lives, 900 people were murdered
Isnt there more to the video at the end? Why does it cut out like that? I read the camera man filmed until a shooter approached and shot him point blank. If thats the case, where is the footage?
Scary to know that many of those people would soon be dead or severely wounded, fighting for their lives.
It’s the fact they’re all watching them unpack knowing what they’re in for but can’t say anything. It makes me just feel so uneasy the way their behavior is watching them get undone but they’re never going to let them go
they believed in a crazy guy,,
Roger Boswell just like the ones who believe in trump.

Yes, Jones was a socialist who asked his followers to murder their babies. Kinda like the democRATS.

How was this footage preserved? The gunmen just ignored that cameras were rolling ? And the bodies left where they fell ?
Yes. They didn't care what they left. They were committing suicide anyway.

I was in elementary school when this happened . I couldn't believe it happened 😢
Eerie to see this footage. Leo Ryan frisking Larry Layton (in the green camouflage poncho and white pants) at 0:50.
@@Chad_Dabal Jones was so out of it. He probably meant Garry or Lane.

@Tautriadelta I heard both sides of that.

So, did everything turn out ok?
