- Do we have a strange vehicle for you today. Did you know that Chevy made an air cooled van? This is a 63 Corvair 95 Greenbrier 4 SPEED SICK SHIFT van. It has been parked for 37 years, has 2 carburetors from the factory, and we are going to try to get it running and driving again as a family.

Well, she is a third responder after all 😂
the kids are amazing. so talented. music and art. plus a love for animals and nature. a good work ethic. parenting done right.

You should let Squeezy Paint it like the Mystery Machine with the family’s help of course.
It would make a Good video!
Maybe so if she wants to
Would be a great candidate for that paint scheme, and if Squeezy was to do it ; let her lead!! With however she wants to paint it. You do the prep of course Josh. A Tennessee farm scene with horses in pasture, flowers in bloom, fields freshly plowed inda background,& Granny with her tongue out standing onda bottom rail of the fence😂😂😂

I would love to see Squeeze paint one her way
What a great empty canvas for her!@@Sleeperdude
FYI, the sound of the rain really isn't bad at all! I didn't even notice it until you brought it up.
Ok thank you
Yeah it's barely noticeable Josh. No worries!
Miss working with my dad RIP dad
Josh, i could tell you a long story about 10 of us driving a corvair van accross the country in 1974, when i was 17. It floated awhile in the mississipi river, then sank. The great folks in Louisanna, Missorui hooked it out, we got it running again, with their great help, and motored on. Thanks for the memories, my friend. You folks are SUCH a blessing! Love ya'll!!!!!
That’s an amazing story
Wow
That trip could be movie
My dad had 5 corvairs when I was a kid. Check the valve clearances. Valve guides. If not set right, they will self destruct by throwing rods out the top of the engine. Make sure the distributor bushing is getting well lubricated as well.
Little bit Beverly hillbilly
Its that 5 gallons of Marvel Mystery Oil Ralphie put in her! lol
I think it was
That looks like a corvair motor in the back Matt from Matt's off-road recovery will have every part you need for that motor
Ok thanks
Swap in a 63 to 65 Spyder turbo motor and gauge cluster
@Sleeperdude Matt is an expert when it comes to these Corvairs. He has several large shipping containers full of parts! I'm sure he would be able to answer any questions you may have. I'm looking forward to seeing this build!! Thank you for having such awesome family-friendly content!! You & Tosh have done an excellent job raising your kids. They're all very talented!! Thanks again!! Hope you have a Happy Easter!!
The Morrvair is a beast.
I like the Lakewood wagon and Matt turned it into a nice offroader
The look of disappointment in the squeeze's face is precious. She can't hide her emotions. Great videos, y'all

I have an artist daughter myself. She's so smart. 🥲 always making drawings, clay figures, making hats, sewing, dancing, painting, acting. I can say artists are amazing 😊
Cars just aren't her thing and yep she doesn't hide it, she's more artistically minded obviously.
Daddy-o on the clutch, shifter, and string throttle...Squeezy steering...Ralphie monitoring the belt, the battery, the fuel tank position, and providing starter button service...and Wawa ready with the killswitch. Nobody on the brakes because there ain't no brakes! Everybody has a job to do but nobody can see to do it because of the smoke! PERFECT! Couldn't have been more entertaining and it'll be quite a project to have roadworthy-ish but completely worth all the hassle to get there.
That test drive had me laughing out loud. Several minutes of chaos. No brakes, only a couple gears, smoke screen, string throttle and squeezy driving.... backwards 😂
The "Test Drive" was literally one of the funniest things i've ever seen. Every single door once opened and closed 😀 You guys lightened my today's bad mood up. 🙂
4:55 Squeezie’s reaction is awesome. Love the honesty of that kid.

I saw that, too. Bless'er, Jesus...poor lil' hun.
I'm the oldest of three kids. I have two younger sisters. Wawa, Ralphie, and Squeezie remind me of the three of us. My one sister and I were into cars and motorcycles, my youngest sister, had no interest at all.
Love Wawa's shirt!! Country girls don't retreat, they just reload! It's a cool van, you still see them out there for sale, but they are getting rare and most of them are junked out. Love the fact you are still saving these things.
Thank you
WaWa doesn't play games.
TOSH - MUCH CREDIT TO YOU!! The camera is always on point and always still. Shaking ruins videos and Tosh has a steady hand. I really appreciate the camera work. I don’t think TOSH GETS ENOUGH CREDIT. Every angle is perfect. I feel like I’m right there with Josh! Just my 2 cents…
Corvair engines are notorious for lifter noise when they have been sitting for a while. Just let it idle for a while...a good long while! It will get quieter and quieter until it is one of the quietes six cylinders you have ever heard. (unless the exhaust is bad).
I have owned a 63, 64 & 65 convertible but never a van or truck.
Squeezy not real excited about the van. Lol lol. Cracks me up.
She’s a mess
We don’t care about the sound of rain.

Yes, and on top of that she plays classical piano😮
I bought a 65 Corvair van in 1970 for $200. It burned a quart of oil in every 35 miles. My brother and I rebuilt the engine. I drove that van for five years for work. I am watching and it sure brings back memories.😂❤
How far did you get on a quart after the rebuild?
Squeezes face says it all "you talking to me?" What a gas...you guys love each other. Reminds me of my Dad's Opel!
Can't wait to see this on the road !! Good job guys and gals
The 95 badge was introduced with the 95 horsepower update. Back in the day, we had a Greenbrier-badged 80hp. My uncle liked it and bought a new 95-badged Greenbrier in 63, with the 95hp upgrade. Ours melted its first cylinder barrel in Whitefish, Montana on the way from Massachusetts to Lake Louise (we never made it because the engine was being rebuilt.) A couple of years later, on the way to Mexico, the Powerglide lost reverse and it was traded for a used '64 Biscayne in Tennessee which finished the trip without incident.
Clark's Corvair Parts will have must parts you may need. Another tip, never use a plastic fuel filter in the engine bay, too hot, they melt. Love your channel and family!
Awesome thanks
I used to hate history as a kid. I love it now. Thanks for all the history knowledge.
As an amateur radio operator I can tell you that "telegraph thing" Is a Morse Code Straight Key made by MFJ It's not old. They are from the last decade-ish. It's used to send Morse Code over amateur radio frequencies. I have a couple of them. ALSO The rain sounds cool. It makes this van a rainy day project!!!

FUNNIEST ONE EVER, Squeeze's face said so much, from happy to "I can't beleive I'm in this circus"
Rings are stuck. Run it until they come loose. Or fill the cylinders with penetrating oil, and let it sit. Motor sounds pretty good. If you had serious problems, you'd have at least one dead cylinder. Worst comes to worst, you can buy new jugs and heads, but it doesn't sound like you need them. Comes apart like a VW motor. Good luck!
You are probably right about the rings being stuck, but how does it have enough compression to move it along?
I think just the oil control rings are stuck. The compression rings are fine. Could also just be obliterated valve stem seals. @@mexicanspec
@@mexicanspec They are stuck at the exact diameter of the cylinder when it was parked. Any variation in the inside diameter, as the piston moves in and out, results in oil getting past the rings. Most of the time, there's enough compression in each one to run, but it doesn't stay the same throughout the piston's travel.
You might try Matt's off road recovery in Utah for parts .he has a really cool corvair wagon 4x4 and a van ! He's a good guy. Watch his videos there, great, just like yours!
I checked with Google and it says Corvairs have tubes with seals on both ends that the pushrods run in. They're bad to fail and it will burn a lot of oil. The good news; a kit with all of those seals is like $15. Engine doesn't even have to come out.
That's a Squeezie vehicle! Paint it pink with white daisies, and she will be fabulous!
Yeah maybe
34:10 the rain absolutely not disturbing anything. it's rather soothing and romantic in a way, like being in nature, in a tent or log cabin. stop worrying. 😉
When the belt comes off you'll notice allot of extra power!!
Thanks for making us laugh are butts off. 😂
Really impressive the way you get these old cars & trucks running again. So cool to watch.

That telegraph key would make a pretty cool starter button for something.
Yeah for sure
That’s what they used before cell phones 😂😂😂
Poor Squeezy’s looking like, someone please tell me this is just a bad joke!!😅😂😂😂Poor baby!!!!
Just plain Super Great! Also made me remember something from childhood. There was a guy a couple of streets over who was several years older rhan me who bought a VW and took the body off. Then he put a Corvair engine in it. He was super strong and put the engine on his chest and 'bench pressed' it up while me and his sister put in some bolts - motor mount, transmission? from up above to hold it in place. The only other time I can ever rember being over there was the first time he fired it. We pushed it to the top of the street. When we were going pretty fast, he popped the clutch. It fired once then he reached around behind him and started working that bar back and forth. Suddenly flames shot up out of both carbs and exhaust ports - I don't think it even had any kind of manitolds. Then it took off wildly. That's something a kid just never forgets. He had 4 reverse gears and one forward. What I was told was that the VW and Corvair had opposite rotations. I don't know if that's true but he got things sorted out because I would see him roaring around the neighborhood. The topper was that he never put one of those garish fiberglass bodies on, he just left it a skeleton.
That’s good memories right there
I love how you make working on projects a family affair. The knowledge and hands on experience your children are getting is invaluable. It doesn't just teach them how to work with their hands, it teaches the how to problem solve. Great parenting.

Age 17 I was driving a 64 Ford Econoline van and my best friend, he had a 65 Corvair Greenbrier.
PS: We always had to finesse the gear shift to go into gears bc of the length of the shifter rods from the front all the way to the back.

As soon as that van arrived, I said "Holy crap it's a Corvair!" I would have bought it too. I had a 1970 VW Bus and have always regretted selling it. That was the first vehicle where I learned to work on it myself.

I was recommended the other day by TH-cam about the gentleman who brought you the van. It's fascinating how TH-cam's algorithm picked up on his story about Sleeperdude and recommended it to me. I'm confident that you made the right decision in acquiring this old van. Thanks to Josh Tosh and family, an old van will be given a new lease on life. I had a hand in restoring a '61 Rampside for my boss thirty-four years ago. He found it sitting in a dusty Wyoming field, along with a '62 Greenbrier. Both had to be hauled on a trailer back to Michigan. I got the Rampside's engine running with minimal tinkering, and it had been sitting for years. Body was straightened out and painted the same color as your sample picture.
I drove that pick-up around alot after it was done. It was a 3-speed. And it did have the line coming from the gas tank up to the cab for the heater.
The van was used for parts and we never got it running.
I had one of those dealer albums for 1959 Chevrolets. I bought it from Hemmings 1980. '59 Chevies used to be my favorite because that was the year I was born.
This was the best vlog ever. I was laughing so hard, I almost started crying...it was super hilarious...with the switches and the string...reminded me of the time outside St. Louis when my windshield wipers stoped working and I hooked up some string and tried to pull them in the rain while driving...it did not work...ha! Resored somewhat after 37 years, amazing...God is good!

@@dans_Learning_Curve Well I kind of got the idea from knowing that plus seeing the cooling fan pulley on top. My uncle and my grandpa were big in these bugs. My grandfather bought a flooring companies bugs they were using to advertise with they had covered these bugs with the little squares of carpet. He bought these back in the 80s I helped him take all the squares off of these cars.
That first drive was awesome, the look on the Childs face and the laughter LOL....
I bought a car sight unseen, and had them deliver it 2 hours. Convenient, and turned out good
Awesome
yes i will love to see you work on the MG
Yeah we need to
My Father bought a 1961Silver and White Greenbrier. He called his Greyhound puppy. It leaked oil like a sieve. The heater worked off a Bellows that opened the passage in the tins under the Push Rod tubes and let it into the Cabin it did not use gasoline but warm air from the tins surrounding the engine. A couple of tricks you can lower the front end by replacing the shocks with a pair of 1957 Chevrolet Sedan front shocks. I you replace the push rod tubes with to seal without leaking use Viton replacement O rings. Just soak them for 24 hours before installation. I rebuilt the engine in 1972 I had the lower end balanced. It didnt leak drop of oil. It ran like atop until it dropped a valve seat despite having a complete vale job by a "Corvair" expert Mechanic. One sneaky failure mode is the harmonic balancer was 2 pieces of stamped press fit steel and as it aged and under hard acceleration going over a mountain it split apart and sliced open the oil filter. So two different methods for repair are weld the two pieces together or buy a billet degreed timing wheel. Enjoy!
Awesome thank you

Clarks Corvair is a great source for parts and advice on Corvair repair. Easy to find on line. I have 2 Corvairs, a 1963 4 dr Monza and a 1961 Corvair95 rampside truck. Have learned a lot in getting them running and roadworthy. I have a few suggestions for yall if you intend to get it back on the road with an original drivetrain.
1. Install a new fuel tank. Clarks has them available, will be listed as an FC tank (forward control). Same tank fits the truck and van.
2. Get online and order a Bando brand 3V560 v belt. Its the correct width, most places that sell a replacement sell you one that is too wide. Also you have a bad pulley so that will throw your belt. It does not have to be banjo string tight, just snug works fine.
3. Absolutely no rubber fuel line in the engine compartment. Use steel or copper with flared ends. All your fuel lines and carbs sit directly above your heads and exhaust manifolds, any leaks will burn it to the ground. Only place for rubber is a small section right off the fuel tank and a short piece transitioning from the long steel line under the van to the steel line coming from the engine compartment through the firewall. Cannot say it strongly enough but rubber fuel line in the engine bay can be deadly with these.
4. Clarks Corvair will have all the brake parts, prices are very reasonable.
5. Use an electric pump mounted directly off the fuel tank under the front of the van. I wired mine into the fuse panel under the dash on drivers side, comes on when key comes on.
6. Need a set of air filters, also the engine cover needs to be on for correct cooling. The rubber flap also needs to in place all around the engine compartment to assure proper cooling.
7. There is only on specific size battery that fits in that battery box and its not cheap. But its the only one that fits. If your battery tray is rusted out Clarks sells them. I made my own, its easy.
8. 14 inch tires are hard to find.
I would love to share more with yall if you want, I was very excited to see your van. Its in great shape rust wise. If you want to talk or need more info let me know. Not trying to be a know it all, you did great getting it running, I have just learned a lot that I can share about those weird little motors. Thanks! Hope I can help and PLEASE be careful with those fuel lines.
Looking at his shift linkage, he may have the later tank with the shift rod going through the center of the tank. Clarks has them too, but not cheap. I had room to install a group 51 battery in mine. Cheaper than the OEM size.
@@rupe53 Good to know. Thanks!
