  • Do we have a strange vehicle for you today. Did you know that Chevy made an air cooled van? This is a 63 Corvair 95 Greenbrier 4 SPEED SICK SHIFT van. It has been parked for 37 years, has 2 carburetors from the factory, and we are going to try to get it running and driving again as a family.

Nobody on the brakes because there ain't no brakes! Everybody has a job to do but nobody can see to do it because of the smoke! PERFECT! Couldn't have been more entertaining and it'll be quite a project to have roadworthy-ish but completely worth all the hassle to get there.

Corvair engines are notorious for lifter noise when they have been sitting for a while. Just let it idle for a while...a good long while! It will get quieter and quieter until it is one of the quietes six cylinders you have ever heard. (unless the exhaust is bad).
    I have owned a 63, 64 & 65 convertible but never a van or truck.

My Father bought a 1961Silver and White Greenbrier. He called his Greyhound puppy. It leaked oil like a sieve. The heater worked off a Bellows that opened the passage in the tins under the Push Rod tubes and let it into the Cabin it did not use gasoline but warm air from the tins surrounding the engine. A couple of tricks you can lower the front end by replacing the shocks with a pair of 1957 Chevrolet Sedan front shocks. I you replace the push rod tubes with to seal without leaking use Viton replacement O rings. Just soak them for 24 hours before installation. I rebuilt the engine in 1972 I had the lower end balanced. It didnt leak drop of oil. It ran like atop until it dropped a valve seat despite having a complete vale job by a "Corvair" expert Mechanic. One sneaky failure mode is the harmonic balancer was 2 pieces of stamped press fit steel and as it aged and under hard acceleration going over a mountain it split apart and sliced open the oil filter. So two different methods for repair are weld the two pieces together or buy a billet degreed timing wheel. Enjoy!

I had a hand in restoring a '61 Rampside for my boss thirty-four years ago. He found it sitting in a dusty Wyoming field, along with a '62 Greenbrier. Both had to be hauled on a trailer back to Michigan. I got the Rampside's engine running with minimal tinkering, and it had been sitting for years. Body was straightened out and painted the same color as your sample picture.
I drove that pick-up around alot after it was done. It was a 3-speed. And it did have the line coming from the gas tank up to the cab for the heater.
The van was used for parts and we never got it running.
I had one of those dealer albums for 1959 Chevrolets. I bought it from Hemmings 1980. '59 Chevies used to be my favorite because that was the year I was born.

I had a Greenbrier in high school! Fun vehicle. One thing you gotta watch for on the air cooled cars is trash blocking the cooling fins on the cylinders. Grass, mouse nests, etc. That motor was acting like it was overheating, and that would be a likely cause. Driving while overheating by the previous owner may be the reason for all the oil burning too, the rings are scarred up. Worth rebuilding- parts are plentiful, and you may be able to get away with just swapping out the jugs / pistons.

Rings are stuck. Run it until they come loose. Or fill the cylinders with penetrating oil, and let it sit. Motor sounds pretty good. If you had serious problems, you'd have at least one dead cylinder. Worst comes to worst, you can buy new jugs and heads, but it doesn't sound like you need them. Comes apart like a VW motor. Good luck!

    • @mexicanspec

    • @isaakscheuenstuhl519

    • @ferdjanklow3566
      @ferdjanklow3566 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@mexicanspec They are stuck at the exact diameter of the cylinder when it was parked. Any variation in the inside diameter, as the piston moves in and out, results in oil getting past the rings. Most of the time, there's enough compression in each one to run, but it doesn't stay the same throughout the piston's travel.

The 95 badge was introduced with the 95 horsepower update. Back in the day, we had a Greenbrier-badged 80hp. My uncle liked it and bought a new 95-badged Greenbrier in 63, with the 95hp upgrade. Ours melted its first cylinder barrel in Whitefish, Montana on the way from Massachusetts to Lake Louise (we never made it because the engine was being rebuilt.) A couple of years later, on the way to Mexico, the Powerglide lost reverse and it was traded for a used '64 Biscayne in Tennessee which finished the trip without incident.

Back in the late 80's I was running sideband in the Grey area above 27.405.and got enthralled in the hobby.
There came a time where I met an operator who was an extra class. I learned a lot from him, but the code was something I could not catch. I got to the point of being able to do the written portion of the test. I Aced the General class and got 2 wrong on the advanced. As for the code portion I was sitting there, in the test room, and was doing ok @ 8-10 wpm...but when they went up to the 13 wpm I was not there and whipped the pencil across the room. I couldn't make. so I lost out on my ticket.
I went on to get my Tech+ ticket, but because of the 'wall' I couldn't get voice privileges on the HF bands and that was what I reely wanted. I learned some electronics and protocols to be able to use those portions of the band.
Since I was only limited to 2 meter (with no equipment to sport that) I went back the 'grey band' above 27.405.(11 meters if I remember correctly), and had lots of contacts to chat with.
After a move to a new place I set up my equipment and found that there was a transformer in the area that gave off a boatload of QRM (9+ s units!) My ears were closed and I lost interest in the hobby.
Not more that I can say anymore, and all my friends that I chatted with are all silent keys now.
Its just sad that all I wanted was to chat on the HF bands but the 'old timers' back then were hell bent on doing 13+ wpm to get into the hobby.
I see now it has changed. but too late for me.

Also love Wah Wah's T-Shirt "Country Girls don't retreat, The just Reload!". So as they're looking through the book he mentions the "Monza" and he calls it "The Monza Spider" The Corvair version of the Monza Spider was Turbo (I think). There was also a Chevy in the 1970's and I think into early 1980's that was called "The Monza Spider" which actually had a Big Spider "Painted" (Decal I'm sure) on the hood just like the Trans Am Fire Chicken! Okay "Firebird" (which was supposed to be a Phoenix rising I believe). The Monza is still around in very limited numbers usually as a drag car or just a restored show piece or maybe a Hot Rod. Actually in the first four or five episodes of "Road Kill" they get a hold of a manual V8 Monza which they found would do epic burn outs and donuts then drove it for a bit and tried to add some leaf blower Turbo charging to it a few episode later. LOL. The Chevy Vega and Chevy Monza were basically the same car except not as close as say a GMC and a Chevy Half ton truck. They were distinct styling but very close in every other basic way." But

I've always loved the Corvair. My Dad had a few of them back in the late 60's when he was in high school and flipping cars. My Grandfather had a small used car lot on the farm they had. Dad told me he could buy those cars cheap, put a little work into them and he sold them with no problem. Looking at that green paint, I can't help to wonder if that was a fleet van for a utility company.
Pretty cool you shared that book your Dad had. My Dad owned a 1963 Chevy Impala SS 327 in 1969 during his senior year. His was dark blue with a light blue interior. Cool van, can't wait to see what you do with it as well as that Econoline. Now all you need to find, is a Dodge A100 .

We would pull over and he would put a new one on. (How funny, I posted this before it threw the belt) We lived in Upper Michigan so it was extra fun in the Winter time. It was so light weight that when we came over a hill one time in Winter, the wind caught it, and before you could say "Well bless your heart" we were upside down out in a field. What a ride. That was the end of the ole Corvair. Thanks for all the extra hard work makin vidjas and God Bless you and all the family. John here, from the back-roads of Northeastern Tennessee.
