  • This video shows my varnishing process, including the steps to clean the painted surface, selecting a varnish, applying varnish, and tips on cleaning your brush.
    *NOTE* The first cleaning step is only necessary when you've used silicone dimethicone oil in your acrylic pour painting.

    Thanks for sharing the technical info. Many people just do it and don't explain the chemistry or how to make the work the best.

    Another great video. It's so nice to watch instructional videos (that actually instruct the viewer!) in a subject on which I am always willing to learn more. Might I suggest that you let your brushes dry, hanging, with the bristles down? This lets all the water just run right off the bristles, without watered-down paint collecting at the base, in the crimped metal holding the bristles, or seeping into the wooden handles.

      That's a great tip Gayle, thank you!

      Thanks very much Stephanie! I actually work in a training department right now, so it must be a decent career choice haha

    Excellent video, but I do have one suggestion : do not dry your brushes bristles up. The water will seep into the ferrule and eventually loosen the glue, causing bristles to fall out. Lay them flat to dry or hang with a bristles down until totally dry. Finding a great brush is almost like a treasure hunt sometimes, and once you have it, you certainly don't want to ruin it.

    Tip for those who were less careful with cleaning their brushes, as well as for those who didn't quite get all the paint or varnish out of the brush: Winsor and Newton Brush Cleaner and Restorer, available at Michaels and other art supply places. It's an amazing product. I went on vacation and forgot to take brushes out of a 'draining' cup where the damp brushes could drip, but because I was thinking vacation and not paint, I didn't clean them as well as I should have. Dried paint and stiff bristles! But soaking them in the brush cleaner completely cleaned them and made them soft again. Awesome product, a small bottle lasted me for a long time. I just poured some into a wider jar and sealed it between uses, and it just kept working. It also got paint out of a stencil brush that fell into some paint drips and dried before I noticed. Well worth the $6 or $7 for the small bottle.

    Added note about brushes....some use foam brushes....buy only the wooden handle foam brush with a soft foam head. Also use care not to use any pressure as you varnish as will get foamy bubbles. Foam bushes give a nice smooth coat and a very inexpensive. Question...do you wash your canvas under running water, too?

    • @SouffleArt
      @SouffleArt  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great tip, thanks Rochelle! I do wash my canvas under running water as well, once the paint has had time to dry. It might be due to the thickness of the acrylic paint, or it might be the latex additive from the Floetrol paint extender that I add at the start, but gently washing the dry canvas doesn't mess up the paint

      Are you concerned at all about water on the back of the canvas?

  • @RogueStitches

    How would you prepare a stretched canvas for varnish. Can you wash that as well?

    • @SouffleArt
      @SouffleArt  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, just wash gently using horizontal motion, not pressing down into the canvas. I haven't had any of my stretched canvas paintings sag or warp during the cleaning process.

    Thanks for the info. However, I don't think this will work on a canvas since I don't think you can pour water over it like a solid piece. Is this true or do you do the same to your cavases?

    • @SouffleArt
      @SouffleArt  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've done this on wood, canvas panels, and stretched canvas, and it works just fine without damaging the surface or the paint. As long as you work quickly there's not enough time or water to mess anything up

    If I used WD-40 instead of silicone, would I still have to clean the canvas off before varnishing? Thanks!

    • @SouffleArt
      @SouffleArt  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Ashley! Yes, any oily or slick substance used to encourage cells needs to be cleaned or you'll end up with patchy coverage when sealing/varnishing

    How long do you let it air dry between washing and vanishing?

    • @SouffleArt
      @SouffleArt  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've washed as soon as the paint is fully dry, which will depend on a lot of factors like temperature, humidity, and how thick the paint on your canvas is. A good rule of thumb is to wait one day and that should give your painting sufficient time to dry properly

    What is the medium that you are using for varnish? Thanks

    • @SouffleArt
      @SouffleArt  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've been using Americana Duraclear, or Delta Ceramcoat. Either of those will be great for varnishing! I personally prefer the Matte and Gloss versions, but you can use whichever finishes you like

    Can you use spray varnish?

    • @SouffleArt
      @SouffleArt  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, but make sure you check reviews. Sometimes spray varnish gets tacky or yellows over time

    I forgot to clean my brush.
    RIP brush :'(

    • @SouffleArt
      @SouffleArt  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      InnerAtmos oh noooo! If you want to try and save the brush, the manufacturer might have a recommended product for cleaning it, sometimes they can still be saved!

    • @InnerAtmos
      @InnerAtmos 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hah, cheaper to get a new brush I imagine. It was a cheap hardware store brush. Aaaaand I Just got a fine brush now for my varnishing needs!
      But lol that bit in the end of the video is such a crucial part!
