Papaw's '55 Chevy Hits Pavement For First Time in 40 Years

  • This '55 Chevy holds a special place in our hearts at Street Racing Channel. We decided to ask my grandparents if they would let us put an engine in the car, as it's been sitting for 40 years, and hasn't been driven. To our surprise they told us we could! This car is the reason I race today, it's the reason my father got into racing. There is nothing in this world like driving around in a Black 55 Chevy with a big cam and header mufflers, with a 4 Speed. Hopefully we will be able to get the front end rebuilt soon and get it aligned, gear swap, and some new tires on the way. Eventually some fresh paint, and body work in time. It still drives amazingly well for being a 65 year old car on a lot of the original parts!

Kevin Stueve, agreed. They look good regardless of build, stock, pro touring, drag, street, street/ strip. Any build looks great on these cars.

The '55 has been my favorite car since I was 14 years old, when I would sit behind the wheel and fantasize about driving. In my fantasy it was a highboy, black, silver and blue ghost flames. I'm 58 now and they call them gassers. There has been cars of all sorts that I've owned, driven, and loved in my life, but if money wasn't an object, the '55 would, to this day, be the first car I would seek out. Your Grandpa's beautiful car is one I'd put at the top of my list. Thanks for sharing.

I grad high school in '73.....these things (55-56-57 Chevys) were EVERYWHERE. At the old defunct Tucson Dragway in the 70's, they had the "11 second street-stocks" category on race night. It was full of all kinds of makes/models....but the coolest were the 55's stuffed with 427 L-88's in them. You'd see these on the streets on cruise nights all the time. Timeless look.

My dad bought a 57 to fully restore (car was solid) just to surprise my mother with it. He said all he wanted to do was take my mom "out for a ride before he died" and leave her with it, he passed on from a unexpected stroke before we got it done (was assembled and ready for paint). We finished it off, surprised her with it, and explained the story behind the massive secret to her (from a man that literally kept no secrets)... That was tough asf but what was a extremely strange mix of emotions was taking my mom for the first ride in it.......I was sad, happy, and pissed off all rolled into one (and tbh still am a mixed bag).
We pretty much daily drive it in the summer (because he was so adamant about it was being built for exactly that - to enjoy) and every single time I take it out it feels like he is right there in the car... which has helped me get by with what happened (all I could do was hold him when it happened).
Life is so fucked up and unpredictable when it blindsides you like that.... completely agree cherish these moments (which i'm sure they will).
When I read this comment, it reminded me of something my cousin said to me while I was massively struggling with the "loss"..... he too lost his father at a young age (even younger.. due to being run off the road) and basically said at least you got to have years worth of good memories doing things with your dad and should be thankful for such because many don't get the opportunity to do so and to cherish those memories............. he was absolutely right (just as you are) in saying so and got me thinking about some good times for once. Peace!

@@510Redneck I second that...lost mine at the ripe old age of 13 and boy did it turn my life upside down! I was a lost soul into really bad stuff for almost 15 years cuz I couldn't have cared less. Finally got married, have 3 kids of my own, and got my passion back for hot rods/rock crawlers that we all enjoy together and I NEVER wanna let my kids go through that! Working on an 80 Camaro for the oldest as we speak (he's 14)...but buddy, I'll tell ya, I wouldn't trade those 13 years for ANYthing else in life and just hope and pray my 3 have half as much love, respect, and pride as I did/still do for that man. I feel honored just to be able to call myself his son!!

Billy and a few of his friends are the only you tube car channel kids that I've seen show up at cash days and run with the Street Outlaws and have a shot at taking home the money. My first car was a 69 Firebird that I bought for $1700 in 1987. I bought it after working for several years as a busboy and car wash attendent as a 15 year old with my dad. It had a 400 ci Pontiac motor that me and my dad refreshed. I have so many awesome memories working with him adding all of the little touches to it. It makes me smile thinking about it some 35 years later

I appreciated this video alot. My dad has a 55 bel air as well. He used to street race all sorts of cars in his youth. All the stories he had with all the expensive newer cars he would beat. The big block 409 ect. The stories of him having a spare tyranny in the trunk and changing it on the spot off the road and kept on going. The 4 speed Muncie that's still in it, the big high performance corvette 327 with experimental hot cam in it, the stories of how loud it got opening the collector boxes, a reel to reel player and recorder system built in to the car. Apparently he recorded some of him racing and running around. Someday perhaps well find and listen to it. Sadly dad's 55 has been sitting since late 60s or early 70's. Sold the high performance motor that won all them races. Just a small 250 horse 327 in I now I believe. I have dreamed of surprising dad with that running in some fashion but will probobly never happen. Thanks for the video!

That is a great old car. Thanks for sharing your story. I never owned one, but in the late 1970s my high school buddy had a red '55 with a 327 high performance Corvette motor, 4-speed trans, 2 fat exhaust, and a big pair of fuzzy dice hanging from the rear view mirror. He did all the work himself. That big old '55 would move so fast I could hardly believe it.

The '55 looks great but its the sound of the engine loping at low idle and then reving through the gears that give me the chills. No other sound like a well tuned header exhaust system of a classic street rod like the '55 Chevy. Great job on the resto. Not a Spring goes by that I don't wish I still had my '65 Chevy Nova SS.
