The Unbelievable Bird I've Never Seen...Until Today!

- Sometimes a bird eludes you for a long period of time. Whether it's rare for a region, only seen for brief periods, or just simply becomes a nemesis bird, a particular species can quickly move up the "most wanted" list. One of these species for me, was the Purple Sandpiper. While I lived out of state, cooperative birds had showed up in Wisconsin, but I was never around to view them. Now, with one showing up in Manitowoc, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to try and see it...

That's great! There's nothing like seeing a Purple Sandpiper on the frigid rocks of the Great Lakes. It's an annual adventure I look forward to every year.
👍
Nice sighting! Also good to see the rest of the winter wildlife. When I see this stuff I get a little homesick for Wisconsin, where I spent the majority of my life. I don’t miss that lake wind this time of the year though!!😂 Makes my eyes water, my nose run, and takes my breath away just remembering those blustery winters. Enjoy it while you’re young. I know I did.
Great sightings. You guys have keen and good observation skills. Love you guys. Thank you for championing beautiful birds. Badgerland Birding is the best. Midwest at its best. I miss it.
Thanks so much! The Midwest is great 👍
Still have yet to get one in the UK, they are decently common but god has other plans…
Brilliant video guys. We're lucky to have them on the shoreline near us in the UK.
You really capture the spirit of birding. Thanks
Thank you!
Great sighting and I'm happy to experience the vicarious joy of a cool lifer.
Since I became a birder the most joyful experiences of encountering a lifer is probably seeing a Guianan Cock of the rock, and a Jamaican tody. I've been looking at the tody since I was a kid in my classic Birds of the West Indies by James Bond. Finally seeing one was euphoric.
That’s a cool bird!
The first time I saw Rose-breasted Grosbeak .I know I just a back yard birder. Thanks ,great video. Just about ever bird is a lifer to me.
👍👍
That really is adorable ❤
Congratulations, and thanks for sharing!
Neat bird, congrats on the lifer! Do all sandpipers have such a diverse diet or is that specific to this species?
Thanks! I think most have fairly diverse diets. I’m sure some specific species slightly more than others. For example, Red Knots on the East depend a lot on horseshoe-crab eggs.
Okay cool! I saw some red knots last year where I worked and they were absolutely adorable.@@BadgerlandBirding
@@TheWildReportOfficial HUGE Red Knot fan!
Came for the PUSA, stayed for the Charlie Berens shout-out!
Keep er movin’!
It's pretty cool seeing the lighthouse like that in the winter. I was there last summer and enjoyed a Bonaparte's gull and the minks. It's definitely a great birding spot!
Yeah it was beautiful! We actually had a Brant in nearly the same exact place a few years ago too!
@@BadgerlandBirdingI love brants. They come through my state sometimes but no luck finding one yet
Purple sand piper on swedish language is skärsnäppa😊🐦
Thank you for this video, haven’t been birding for a while, but watching you so happy with the lifer brought so many happy memories 👍🏼🙏🏻
😄
Congrats on the lifer! Such a cute bird. I may have to see if it’s still being reported and make the run up there tomorrow. Thanks for sharing your experience!
Thanks! I don’t think it was seen after the night we left
What a great sighting! Congrats. Very nice. I just want to pick one up and cuddle him up to my cheek, don't you? lol
I sure do
More amazing , that creature never wiped out on those slippery rocks even though the waves were halfway up his legs. And, once again, I am reminded , from the footage, of how nice ot os to be in SE FL! Yes! And there are a few birds here as well. But, I am very glad you toughed it out, actually being from Wisconsin, that probably was not even cold for yall, but anyway, glad you shared!! Pretty cool bird(s).
Haha I am quite jealous of you SE FL folks. For your birds and weather.
Congrats! If I ever see a Purple Sandpiper in Indiana, I'm sure my best views will be looking at a purple blob on a distant jetty.
My favorite lifer experience has to be getting point-blank views of American Flamingos in Ohio.
Hard to beat that in Ohio
My absolute coolest birding experience in my hometown location i think it's when a pastor roseus appeared up on a field together with hundreds of sturnus vulgaris !!
That’s cool!
Nice bird! I guess that's one of the advantages for birders living near Lake Michigan. Thanks for sharing!
It sure is! 🌊
Nice! Amazing video as usual. I remember seeing a purple sandpiper in one of your old videos, that one was good too!
Yeah! That was when Ryan got his lifer on the first of the year trip two years back, if I’m not mistaken.
my most recent lifer was the accidental Cattle Tyrant here in Corpus Christi! Great job on your lifer - I hope to bird that way some day and add many more birds to my list!
That’s a good one!
Haven't they just recently split the two buff bellied pipits into two separate species?
I did a quick Google search and it looks like there is a paper proposing it, but I don’t think it’s official yet.
Enjoy this channel! Good filming, commentary and details. Thanks
Thanks!
I think that my favourite time getting a lifer was a PUFI. I was screaming in my head
👍👍
An awesome bird, still trying to get my first, gonna look for them at the Jersey shore this winter
👍👍
Congrats Derek! Purple Sandpipers are the best!
Thanks, buddy!
You guys are on fire. How often we all get skunked by doing this. You’re very good birders!
Thanks! We definitely have days like this too though 🤣 th-cam.com/video/eW1VoXj1Dd8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=NvMa7w7h11koKzb3
Saw one a few weeks ago on the Michigan side. Such a cute and interesting bird!
Awesome!
I have had Varied thrush hanging around here in UP for at least a week now.
Great bird!
They are such cuties, congrats on another lifer.
Thanks!
Congratulations! So glad you got to see this cutie! With bonus American pipits!
Awesome! Purple Sandpipers are remarkably confiding. The only lifers that I've added from closer range were Spruce Grouse and probably a few hummingbird species. How 'bout you? What is your "closest encounter" lifer?
That’s a great question. It might have been this one when it walked past us. The Ross’s Gull in Illinois moved crazy close to us too, but not as close as the Purple Sandpiper.
Anna’s hummingbird last month in the twin cities. And yes, spruce grouse in the sax zim last winter!
Congrats! Great video as always😊
Thank you!!
Congratulations and great video!
Thanks, Candy!
Ah we get them fairly regularly in England during the winter months but I've still only ever seen two and that was down to luck!
I was actually at the Manitowoc Impoundment the first day this bird was seen about half an hour before it was first found and didn't see it. I'm not sure if it was present and I missed it, or if it actually didn't show up until shortly after I left. It was definitely an annoying situation but I have seen this species in the state before back a couple winters ago when there was the one in Milwaukee.
Dang, that’s tough. Did you check the rocks by the lighthouse? If we didn’t know it was around we could have easily overlooked it.
@@BadgerlandBirding I scanned them with my bins once and didn't see anything, but I easy could have missed it even if it was there.
You should go bird in south africa specifically kruger national park someday
That sounds epic. A friend of mine just got robbed birding in Africa so that definitely made it seem less appealing 😂
Yeah the crime rates here are no joke🤣😂
So cool! Just last week I saw my first Barred Owl at my local refuge in Lacey, WA. He was sitting nearly at eye level in a Big Leaf Maple just a few yards from the trail for an excellent view and photograph. And there was only one other photographer, who I let stand closer in case the owl got aggressive! A natural 'high' for several hours for sure!
Beautiful video ♥♥♥♥
Thank you for taking us along! ❤
You’re welcome! Thanks for watching!
Congratulations 😊
Thanks!
Congratulations 🎉!
Thank you!!
Keep on removing!
Time for the Craigslist Kicker!
Wonderful photos! ❤
Life Bird HIGH FIVE! I absolutely LOVE Purple Sandpipers. Every one I've seen has been just like this - completely oblivious to close observation. So cool!
💥🙏
Nice bro
Thanks!
Congrats! They are such a cool, & hardy, shorebird. Interesting story involving a purple sandpiper & a mink here in Upstate NY along Lake Ontario a few years ago. A sandpiper was found along a similar type jetty where you saw yours & the person sent out an alert. About 5 minutes later they sent another alert saying “sandpiper just eaten by a mink”! Gotta watch those mink!
Oh no 🥲 that’s tough
I'm so happy for you guys ! Im glad you got to go too Nathaniel 🎉 What an awesome bird to cooperate with you. The mink was cute too.
These videos are so good... I wish when we were out, I could have all this info playing in my ear for any bird I see. You look so happy 💜
Thanks! It was a fun trip!
Congrats that’s an amazing life bird! There was an individual close to me in San Francisco some time ago but I never got the opportunity to go up for it.
Normally they don’t stay too long. This was wasn’t seen the next day after we saw it.
Lifer?
A lifer is when you see a bird species you’ve never seen before. Referencing the first time in your life you’ve seen it.
@@BadgerlandBirding Ah I see very well
Is this bird rare or just rare where your at?
Just rare where we’re at! It’s a species of “Least Concern”
