    My Great Great Uncle fought in Festubert during WW1 Scottish Soldier
    He died on the 15th of May 1915
    I would hazard a guess he would have seen these.
    They fought hand to hand in the trench before the order came to go over the top.

    This will probably be my next project. I made a rebar axe and a few knives I think I will hammer out the front of the guard and sharpening it as a punch blade as well a slasher

  • @winkleried
    @winkleried 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Don’t worry about slashing or chopping. From what I understand the original ones were strictly stabbing weapons. So all you need is a point on it.

      winkleried True, but an edged blade is more likely to slice an artery upon thrusting

    I really like how the raw part on the blade lengthens it without you having to forge it out all the way

    Thanks for your video. I'm learning how to home forge and I found this extremely helpful. I love the fact that you use down to earth available resources and produce great results. I'm inspired! Also your commentary, advice and persona is really chill/appealing! So good!!

    great report! remember in 1915, once the trenches & their often boredom began, most Frenchmen, or any European, or American, Canadian, Australian, were farm boys & factory workers familiar with forging & grinding, & scavenging! I would bet any infantry or engineer unit would have a big grinding wheel for axes & shovels, etc... and these "nails" I wonder if they were made triangular, or just the more useful salami cutting, heinie slashing blade? Love the disco/porn music at the end!

    Me and my friend are doing a no power tool contest to see who can make the best weapon, I want to make something like this, what could I use instead of a angle grinder?

    • @FargoFX
      @FargoFX  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      - GamerGuy130 - Sounds like fun. 👍 I’d use a metal file, takes time, but puts a good edge on knives. The key is to clamp down the blade and work at one consistent angle. (And be careful, I’ve cut myself using a file on a knife blade.)

    Like you said early in the video, modern carbon steel rebar is a good analog for the materials originally used to make these knives, but it's not something that would have been laying around in 1915-1918 since concrete was still being reinforced with cast iron and inferior steel at the time.
    Has anyone ever positively identified the source material for one of these original knives?

      The thicker wire they used to hold the barbed wire in place was a good source for it

    • @ianfinrir8724
      @ianfinrir8724 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Some were made from cut down bayonets, but most were made from the metal posts they strung the barbed wire up with.

    Great project, it got me thinking about making one as soon as i'm at my forge. Quick question, how do you like that HF "forge" vice? Ive been thinking about getting one, but I'm not sure if it would be worth the money, or if I should save up for a higher quality vice.

    • @FargoFX
      @FargoFX  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      pyrotech1999 Good question, I’ve been thinking about reviewing it one of these days. So far it has done everything I’ve asked it to, but with that said I haven’t used the “anvil” feature, And I’ve heard from other sources that it’s pretty cheaply made and can crack. I’ve had no trouble with it, but it has seen pretty light duty in my shop.

    • @pyrotech1999-bootlegblades
      @pyrotech1999-bootlegblades 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great! that might be one of my next purchases, unless I can find an old antique or something that was made a long time ago. I was also wondering if you'd like to do some sort of collaboration around thanksgiving (thats when i'll have access to my tools to make a video) where we would both make/forge something and send our subs to each others channel in that video. Let me know if your interested and we can talk more about it!

    I don't know much about history But I do know that the Germans once used flame throwers in the trenches And because it was so violent evil everyone else said no that's not fair and they stopped Eventually when shotguns were Used in the trenches The German said that That was not fair
    Trench warfare is just not fair generally

    You could make small things as shown on Ed Calderons instagram called Eds Manifesto.
    Apart from that why didn`t they just put a spike on one end? Would be easyer to make and probably also easyer to carry. Not sure how usefull the "blade" is.

    You’re using the wrong hammer. The claw on the back is very dangerous and the face of the hammer is too small for proper metal moving.

    • @FargoFX
      @FargoFX  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Jaxxon Koethler Agreed! But I’m also showing that blacksmithing can be done with very simple tools. But yes, definitely worth mentioning that there are far better, and safer hammers.

    That knife should have been ground better because that cantaloupe chop/slash whatever was a total fail. Less thickness and an oil quench. The blade was just a little sharper than the handle.....lol..nice design but it was more like a club than anything else.
