Do you ever used jelly balls for spades? They are a grapefruit sized jelly fish that doesn't sting, although they will stain your hands for a couple of days. Once you find them you can catch them with a landing net right at the surface. Throw a whole one on a coat hanger bent into a T shape to act as chum and then cut strips for bait on hooks.
I caught them much bigger - one was the size of a garbage can lid - and it was just as tasty as the smaller ones. Seriously underrated for the fight and flavor. Awesome video!
Spades have saved a number of tough trips offshore. Pickup a jellyfish, cut small, and pop it on a little gold eagle claw hook. A 2500 spinner and you got yourself hours of fun and some fine fish for the frier. I've cooked it with speckled trout and no one could tell them apart
I had spade fish years ago. They were much bigger than the ones you caught in the video. They were so thick we snatched them just like you do mullet. I remember being real disappointed in the taste. It could be though that the big spadefish are just naturally going to be stronger. That was also before we wised up to bleed the fish out instead of just tossing them in the cooler. I am going to try your technique out and hopefully bring home the small ones to try. I wish you had grilled them instead of frying them. Frying is the great equalizer, everything tastes pretty much the same. I have an 11 by11 inch lodge cast iron griddle. Just give it two minutes over a propane stove to get hot and maybe two minutes a fillet and you are done. Doesn't stink up the house and no clean up. Your last videos of the tripletail and these spadefish have been really interesting.
We use the iodine line off cannonball jellies for bait. We put a few whole jellyfish on a coat hanger and drop it down when they're deep then pull them up to the top to cast on

Haha I can’t stand a hardhead. Bonita arnt too terrible if you bleed and ice them right away. Eat them fresh seared like tuna you might like it. I’m sure you see a lot of spades spear fishing!
@CaptCollier we use #1 or #2 xx strong hooks. Cut the clam into several straps and basically hide the hook in the clam. They eat jelly fish as well. Some folks use the clear gummy bears and have success. Or so I've "heard".
I had a absolutely giant spade bite a bare hook on a chicken rig hanging in the water below the boat , could barely get the rod out the holder when it doubled over 😂

What was the swells and wind speed? It's been 2 feet and 15 mph winds in Galveston tx. Been wanting to go out to the rigs but I'm told those conditions aren't good.
It was pretty choppy that morning with pop up storms all around but eventually layed down to 1ft or less for the rest of the day. Yea 15mph + winds is not ideal to be out in unless you’ve got a big boat

Ive seen videos on youtube where the throw an entire jelley fish on a teaser line to pull them up. Then they use pieces of helly fish on the hook.

A little trick… line a double paper bag with paper towels to put your fish in then put it in a cooler to keep it warm..

"Angel Fish" are a fresh water species... these just happen to look like them, and HUGE by comparison.
