I've watched a lot of Colbert in my life, but if I had seen this when it first aired, I might have thought nothing of it. Having just discovered Rilo Kiley less than a month ago, I've in love with Jenny Lewis. This song is great!

@@leavingitblank9363 The chorus is not being said by the song’s narrator. It’s the “little song” she introduces just before singing it each time (do you remember when he used to sing us this little song) The song makes more sense after you notice that. Anyway her parents were heroin addicts, so here she’s imagining them singing her an insouciant little lullaby about their drug use. And the bridge is pretty clear and literal, on the topic of wasted youth: “Just cause you’re young, don’t mean nothing. We’re here and we’re gone.” I.e you have all the time in the world to do something with your life, until you don’t. “Do something while your heart is pumping”

Is this song about what I think it is? (The alkaloid in poppies that can steal away your youth). I like it whatever it's about. Great band with strings, singable chorus, attractive singer/songwriter.
Yeah, skulls, why? People who 'decorate' themselves with those kind of repulsive icons have no place in the public sphere. I find them pityful. I did not like the (first 15 seconds that I watched of) the song.
@NakedAndLaughing -- You dead people are something else lmao. I feel sorry for you, celebrating death and decay ... while you are alive. Well, at least you are naked and laughing, so I'll give you that ;)
I think that's the subtle message they are trying to put across. Hairstyle and makeup from the 60s, psychedelic background from the 70s, tracksuits from the 80s (with a wink to the 50s when a pop bands had to dress in the same outfit). And the poppy is a reference to wartime, although war never stopped in the other decades either. So I'm guessing the message is to not waste your youth on war.
