  • The Edge explains that U2 is a 'live band', not a band that labors for days and days in the studio, and their songwriting reflects that.

Some people don't understand that it doesn't have to be complex and busy to work. Him and Ringo Starr are getting sh*t for their simplicity, but they serve their songs and they make it work perfectly. That's all that really matters.

being able to serve it in a complex but nuanced way that sounds relaxed is a nice in-between imo

For me it’s about the song in its entirety. I’m not into the technical speed demon - unless I like the music/song. And sure many of U2’s guitar parts are simple even I can somewhat play, but that’s in hindsight. Credit has to be given for the imagination, simple or not, of fitting what he does into their music. And he’s is really, really, really great at that.

Not a fan of U2 but have always respected them as musicians. Even The Edge

The simplicity of Bad live (with exception of the backing track loop) is Stratocaster > Delay Unit (dotted 1/8th note) > Vox AC30. Just a great song.

Simplicity is the key in big venues. 100%. Hence why bands like U2 and AC/DC sound great and many other bands sound muddy. Simple melodies with space between chords and riffs give enough time for acoustics to reverberate. When the song is too busy with many rining chords or riffs too close together, it sounds very muddy regardless of who's at the mixer.

Elvis Presley and America is a great example of U2 improvising.
The vocals are the result of producer Brian Eno encouraging lead singer Bono to improvise lyrics while listening to the music for the first time.

It's like the test of a great chef. Anyone can make great food with complicated and multiple ingredients........ Great musicians can make great music with anything, including minimalism.

i just don't get why even a band as innovative as u2 follows the dogma, that you publish one version of a song/guitars, and that's it..?? tech now allows for endless mixes, even done by a listener.. check prototypes on my channel..

You do know it was a high school nickname given by friends? No one demanded he be called that. Who is actually being pretentious in this equation? If you don't care for his music, fine. Lame accusations are petty and easy.
