This movie is a powerful statement about the necessity for good men in a boy’s life. Doughboy clearly had the natural intelligence, strength, courage, and leadership qualities that could take him far in life. But his mother was ill equipped to give him the proper guidance.
According to the director, the father of Doughboy was an abusive alcoholic gang member who treated Doughboy's mother like trash and cheated on her regularly. He neglected Doughboy to the point of even denying paternity and wanted ZERO to do with him. When Doughboys father was locked up for life for murder, his mother cut off all ties with him and found herself a sincere, loving, and overall good man whom she had Ricky with. Ricky's father loved Ricky and his mother with all of his heart and showed it at every opportunity and even took care of and included Doughboy in everything. Tragically, Ricky's father was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting over the fact that he was in the wrong place wearing rival gang colors and was mistook for a rival gang member. This devastated Ricky's mother which set the catalyst on how she treated both boys differently from young boys to adulthood.
Wow. Dats a hell of a back story. Wish the film was long enough to include it. But for viewers I guess it lets them lean with their own imagination of their characters upbringing.
