Just past his birthday Maureen, his qualities come into perfect view at this time of year: swallows, swifts, martins, cow parsley and hawthorn dressing the country lanes. Sprays of white blossom and Queen Anne's Lace bedeck the British countryside. It can't get more perfect. No wonder he missed this unutterable beauty when returning to subterranean darkness.
I adore Hardy's poetry and when it is read by such a voice it stirs the senses in a way that defies description here. Beautiful video that will be played often, thank you.
The photo of the Amish man and horses is poetry in itself, very 'Henri Cartier-Bresson', and if it were my own I would have it enlarged and on my wall in the front room I love it that much. It speaks of the simplicity of Hardy's Wessex, and the harmony that can exist between Man and Nature. Very moving :-)
@trombonegirl64 Thanks again. I very much agree with your sentiments. It's one of my favourite photos too, and I'm ashamed to say I took this and many others furtively, since the Amish object to tourists pointing cameras at them - and who can blame them? Ugh! However one might try to rationalise, it's at best rude, and I clicked this one through the car windscreen. And I went on to click my shutter many more times when I was among the Amish - for the sake of art...
Poignant verse with a very well matched piece of music - reminiscent of the more popular music of the times. Was it Jon Lord's own composition? It sounds very much like the theme music to the tv productions of the TH's short stories from the 70s. Thanks for posting.
lovely shots...sonorous word, but, the music was not up to the rest; I am afraid, rather immature from a professional musician,i.e. no depth and very little range. I mean, we are speaking of mystic countrymen, shamans of natural life, secret from all of us now.
This was played at my husbands funeral ....the words are him exactly ,just as he was, slipping away in his usual inimitable style,God bless him x

May God support you under your affliction dear.
This is a self elegy ,meaning the poet feel s no one can write about him than himself. Hardy is a great poet.
My mother passed away 2 years ago today, I shared it on facebook today in her memory. Thank you so much
Beautiful score, wonderfully narrated
Thank you!

Three men whose voices I would gladly hear on my own deathbed: Jeremy Irons, Richard Burton, and Dylan Thomas.

Hi Jimmy. Yes, by all accounts it is Jon Lord's original work. Best wishes.
Artful treatment. Well done. I like it. (There are a couple of Hardy's on my site).

Avery Herbert have*
Avery Herbert Alas I have not Avery, but this poem is amply covered should you wish to explore more on the Internet. Best wishes.
Too puritanical for me; there's damp moss on the base of all his unvisited churches. He goes too gently into that goodnight.
Yes slips gently away without a fight but perhaps it is better that way as death is inevitable.
