Thanks for doing this vid, painful watching for those of us who love Blackpool. The town's been in decline for decades and was exploited and used by large companies such as Trust House Forte and many others, for cheap labour and fast profits. None of those large companies which were here for decades, reinvested in the town's infrastructure and probably paid little or no taxes which benefitted the local communities. The tide went out on Blackpool a long time ago, and what's been left behind are the poor, the damaged and the unwanted. Don't blame the poor for Blackpool's poverty, ask what happened to all the money the town and its workers generated during the golden days.
its a real shame to see the difference from when i was a young kid around 2004 to now. i dont go into town, theres nothing, i just go to manchester or liverpool, preston is almost as bad. you have to leave the town to get anywhere and you can never come back if you want to keep a good career!
Me personally I try to avoid Manchester but as you say you've got to go there for travel or career, what I'm going to do a few videos around Manchester should be interesting
It has lost its way. It once used to boast THREE railway stations to cope with the demande of holidaymakers, now it has one and a bit. My first hotel holiday was Blackpool and that building has been demolished ( The Balmoral Hotel/Argosy ) Hotels knocked down everywhere now and others stand boarded up and empty. The rest looks SHABBY at best. Nothing but a cess pit, to be honest. I'd say Blackpool has a problem, then I look around every town and city in Britain and see the same. The disease is within us all and especially made worse by that brought from abroad. We have a nation of slobs, who gaze at their mobiles all day, which is why everything is falling to bits.
I was brought up in Blackpool. Never went beach or lights. Went to Our lady’s school and lived in a dead end road called chestnut avenue. Then we lived in ash st. Then we moved down south. Best thing my mum ever did , it’s a seasonal dump.
@@Randomanddesperate we used to have a back field next to shell garage on common edge rd I think ! And I just to swim at the ivy leaf out door swimming pool in the summer as it was literally a hop across the road. You may know of the family I’m on about if you local born n bred.
It needs to accept that times have changed and demolish the derelict areas and landscape them, like they did in Sheffield city centre when Meadowhall shopping centre was built was built, 3 miles from the city centre.
Same in liverpool council spends millions in the city centre tourist areas yet go out side the city centre and the council do nothing for the poorer areas.
Sad but annoying with such a housing shortage to have so many derelict properties. I’ve never been to Blackpool as I’m a London but I’m aware of other areas like for example Jaywick in Essex which was a holiday resort I remember visiting as a small child staying I. A caravan it is now poorest place in Britain and nicknamed Soweto on sea…but only 65 miles from the great Metropolis of London with its 8 million residents…
Thanks for you comment, you're absolutely right they could do some of these properties up and given for affordable housing for the young people, there haven't got chance now
I'm 17 and I grew up in Blackpool, moved away now, but it's weird reading these comments and seeing the worst street names listed and they're the ones I would walk to my dad's house through, some of them just being a street or two away from where I lived for 12 years. I love going to towns and exploring them and I always felt it was strange that I lived in Blackpool for so long but I couldn't find my way around, really, because obviously I wasn't allowed out to play. So it's cool to see you going down all the streets I'd get lost trying to find despite formerly being a local, it is sad about the shops. But I don't think Blackpool has had a golden age since pre-90s. It's always been tacky, but it was just so much more charming back in the day, I suppose. It feels so strange that I'm from there when really, there's nothing at all to say about it. It's just a sort of shell of a place. Though further down the town away from the beach, there are some nice streets, older houses. Most people have nostalgic memories of holidays in Blackpool but for me it's a sort of bittersweet fever dream of streets full of rubbish and my dad's bike always getting stolen, lol.
Thank you for sharing this story a very interesting read, you put a lot of passion into to that statement. Blackpool has certainly changed over the years and it's very sad to say it could be so much better than it is
I love Blackpool even more because of how raw it is, I am fortunate to have travelled internationally but I've only been interested in Blackpool for the past year. I've been through poor parts of south east Asia and it was a similar level of disrepair along the back streets by Central pier except it was more familiar. As a photographer I find the contrast that you see just by going one street in from the prom fascinating but I guess it'd be pretty brutal actually living there, I don't think I'm that tough truth be told.
I love Blackpoo, and go there every year with my childrenl it's just quite disturbing that all the revenue over the years goes to money-making tourist and they forget about the good people of Blackpool the locals
Great video I'm glad you filmed this 👍 My wife and I just returned from Blackpool yesterday, we had a great time but it breaks my heart when I see the back streets of Blackpool , Lytham road , Bond street, Central drive , Waterloo road , Coronation street are in such a state it's like something from a end of the world movie , I love Blackpool and went as a child and took my kids there , now my kids want to go abroad, Blackpool is expensive, our hotel was expensive for what we got and the breakfast was cheap produce , not value for money , I think Blackpool is getting worse every year , we visited Lytham the town next to St Anne's and it's beautiful compared to Blackpool , Lytham is full of rich people and it's another world compared to Blackpool yet it's right next to Blackpool . The council in Blackpool must be lining their pockets over the years they are not putting the money back into Blackpool it's such a shame , I can see Blackpool becoming a ghost town it will become like Morecombe, the Blackpool prom hotels are all empty and are becoming run down and dirty , I can't figure out what the council want to do with Blackpool , such a shame as I have great memories of Blackpool, but no wonder people go abroad for holidays it's cheaper and cleaner , I also noticed the backstreet's of Blackpool are dangerous at night , they are talking about redevelopment in Central drive with a new entertainment theme park attraction costing 300 million but why would any company invest 300 million in a town that is on its knees ? I'm glad you have shown the other side of Blackpool because there are TH-cam channels that don't want to show that side , What do you think Blackpool will be like in 10 years ? I hope it gets better but I cant see that happening, look forward to your next video 👌👋
I dread to think what it's like in 10 years but I will still be doing doing TH-cam lol and you can follow my story if I'm still around, I really enjoyed reading your story about Blackpool and yes you're absolutely correct the younger generation don't wanna go to Blackpool unless it's for stag, everyone goes abroad because it's cheaper
great vid. I'm 55 and originally from Wigan so visited Blackpool many many times growing up. it's always been a bit run down but obviously got worse. last time I was there was 2016. I'm now a US citizen and living in daytona beach Florida, pretty much the same here, you have your nice areas but do a little exploring and you see a lot of deprivation. Noticed it in other places over here also, for example, Atlantic city.
This is the reality check needed. Thankfully there has been more investment recently but more should be done for the local community. Great number of views, this is proof of how much videos like this matter. Thanks Random 😊
As a coach driver who used to do tours to Blackpool for years, yes the coach got broken in to. Years later nothing has changed and now the council letting the coach companies park for free this year, but no drivers are keen on parking on the coach parks. Sad it has come to this, because it was once a great place
@edwinturner1149 I don't think retail parks are needed, what is needed for the council to look after the homeless and vulnerable people in b/pool. The town is ok, it needs life put back into it
Thanks for uploading this very raw and interesting video. It's certainly an eye opener and proof that there's always two sides to every coin. Keep up the good work 👍
I just came home from Blackpool yesterday. I stayed at Tiffanys, but thats another story. I saw some of the back streets of Blackpool and I couldnt believe it. Its so sad to see it in this state. I was told by staff at tiffanys not to gout out to the back of the hotel to the smoking area at night because there are alot of drug addicts and undesirables hanging about around there. Such a shame.
Yes very sad story indeed I had holiday there in 1978 It was a magical place to go it breaks my heart to see this video I really hope that things will change in the future I sincerely do
Glad you pointed out, that most of Blackpool’s issues arrived from out of town. Unemployed down and outs from all over the U.K., arriving in their droves, to occupy cheap former B&B’s and other suchlike properties.
Daytrips to Blackpool as a kid growing up in the 1970s and 80s was such a magical time , I loved the excitement of it it all , the noises , the smell of burgers and hotdogs wafting through the warm summer air,..candyfloss and fish and chips,...the golden beaches and the donkey rides,....the hustle and bustle of the pleasure Beach,...it was such an exciting time , and as a kid it was the best place in the world ...Great times, wonderful memories
I was the same when I was a kid it was so exciting to go to Blackpool or the experiences and it's so sad to say how things have changed I hope it gets the magic back
I have a bucket list to visit Blackpool when I come over to the UK next year. I have watched countless videos from vloggers on how bad this city is. It’s not stopping me from visiting this beautiful seaside city though. I grew up in poverty and know how hard it is to get out of and it can be generational if you let it. We have quite a few here in Australia as well so Blackpool isn’t the only one.
My wife and I always had a few days in Blackpool when the children were young in the 1980s, we all loved the atmosphere and the buzz. I went there 2 years ago and could not believe how the place had deteriorated , with drunks etc.
Years ago it was proud to be a family vacation a good old British holiday unfortunately Blackpool has gone down hill in recent times due to drunken behaviour stag do's and the unfortunate ones
I used to go on holiday in blackpool every year , havent been for a good few years now unfortunately, but I loved walking through the side streets as I found it a lot quieter than the seafront and I cant cope with crowds of people. loved the little shops and cafes little indoor markets .such a shame a lot have closed down .
I grew up there in the 70s/80s and was shocked on my last visit. Lived just off Central Drive, went to school in Lytham rd and spent so much time in South Shore. I could have cried at how ti had changec.
My wife and I use to love a walk around the back Sts. Between The Viking hotel and Blackpool FC were some great little bargain shops. Last time we visited most of these little shops had shut down, very sad. Visiting in October for the lights.
Yup ,same for all small towns in the North of England, 70s and 80s were great ,late 90s and the neglect from government and mass immigration turned us into a clown show.
Blackpool has deteriorated so much, streets where nothing is done and no investment the place is just going down hill, such a shame having had many a happy time there when I was younger. Thanks for uploading but, unfortunately, I can’t see any hope for it now.
Many tourist cities have this issue of having a council that only care about the façade, Gloucester is similar.. a lot of money is spent on the area around the cathedral and less so the docks and the rest of the city gets neglected. Those that can afford it move to Cheltenham What's the point in paying council tax when it's spent disproportionately
That building site you walked past has been empty for months, The developer went bust and no one else wants to pick up where they finished off, I lived in Blackpool down the other end for a year. No employment in the winter, low employment in the summer, It's like there's that small window in the summer where everyone rips each other off in order to go and hide in the winter, Blackpool has a zoo but you could call the whole town a zoo and in winter all the animals contained within it go into hibernation.
It's very hard to hear that Blackpool is struggling And thanks for sharing your story very interesting especially interesting especially about that everyone rips each other off And goes hiding in Winter
@@Randomanddesperate well it depends where you are in the country. If you’re in the west end of London your main cost is the land, the construction materials are a small percentage of your costs. If you’re in Blackpool or South Wales then building materials become a major part of your costs. This is partly why you see empty derelict buildings in poor areas, the banks won’t lend developers money if the end product is worth less than what you spent. I know someone that converted a building to flats on Topham street, it took almost two years and he just broke even. So two years of work for nothing. All the trades got paid though, so that’s something.
To be honest it’s not a “Blackpool problem” it’s uk wide … many towns have town centres that are now boarded up, with drug gangs and anti social behaviour a huge problem…. I think Blackpool has so many great features including its fab people and the huge investments that are being made should help it … People don’t go shopping the way they did, so new uses need to be found for all the town centre vacant units. I ❤BLACKPOOL.
Blackpool used to be a great place to be when i was a kid back in the early 70s. I was there only 2 years ago and sadly i just couldnt believe how bad the place was talk about urban deterioration.
Went down bond st 1 year ago thought I was in Beirut dreadful place. What's happening in Blackpool is what happened to ryhl the place is bankrupt and being filled with over spills from Liverpool and Manchester
You are 100% correct about Blackpool Council I returned to Blackpool after leaving the Army in 1977, went to Town Hall ref Council House, I was asked where I had just come from explained I had just left Belfast, I was offered my fare back ,,I had only left home to join the Military, parents still did my vote by Depole,,Sir Peter Blakeney ( think thats how his name is spelt) was contacted ( Conservative MP) he wrote explained that Blackpool Council was one of a few Councils in UK, who didn't give any help to Ex Servicemen returning home, that was in 1977 apart from odd weekend ( to see Mum),I have never returned to my home town, & always told holidaymakers not to go as all Blackpool Council is intrested in is tourism, the local folks count for nothing ,yes Iam still very bitter towards Blackpool Council today , I do watch your videos about Blackpool out of intrest, & the Local Police all know my car as there is a sticker, DONT FOLLOW ME, FOLLOW BLACKPOOL FC bright orange sticker) still follow them, always found Blackpool's Council PROGRESS bit of a joke ( has it changed)
I grew up in Salford and used to get the train from Manchester Victoria back in the late 70's & early 80's. I have happy memories of a lively vibrant place. Hadn't been for many, many yrs so decided to take my kids a few years ago. What an absolute shit hole it was... we lasted about ½ an hr in the place! The best thing about Cackpool is the M55 out of it.
Just came back from visiting today, I couldn't believe how run down everywhere was! It was a bittersweet kind of nostalgia as we used to visit every year as kids and hadn't been there in almost 7 years. Its crazy how much of a front it is. It seems the council only invest in what the tourists put money into, unfortunately I don't think it will be long before the tourism stops 😞
My sister have just returned after spending a week in Blackpool, I ended up emailing the Council to complain mainly about the traffic light at the Manchester pub, the pedestrian lights didn't work, we had to take a gamble and cross. We were both in mobility scooters cos were walking impaired. I was emailed back & told that they'd get the electric co E O N onto it, whether they did or not I don't know as we came home a few days later. I also said that Blackpool has gone to seed, with all the derelict buildings & beggars, nothing was said about beggars or buildings.
I'm afraid we've gone past that point of no return for Blackpool They're starting to invest on the front thought as you said this beggar's Homeless drug addicts alcoholics all Roaming round the streets of Blackpool
COUNCIL for years in the pockets of those who own the seafront events, Golden Mile and one particular Family. Refused DisneyLand coming 30+ years ago. No investment in Industrial Parks etc. etc.
Blackpool used to feel like a magical place when I was a child. We used to go twice a year living in Preston when I was little and now I take my kids there and its not the same. You can see the deprivation and its only one block away from the golden mile
I first went to Blackpool summer 2000 and the backstreets were decaying then - I’ve been several years since and noticed the further decay - hotels that use to be so grand 20 years ago now being demolished- it holds a lot of sentimental memories with my mother and father , I’ve not been since 2018 but I am thinking of going this year
Dylan Thomas said this about Swansea, his home town It's appropriate for Blackpool too - “An ugly, lovely town ... crawling, sprawling ... by the side of a long and splendid curving shore. This sea-town was my world.” I love the beach in Blackpool, the lively pubs, and "interesting" nightlife, but I was shocked how run down was when I first visited.
My late husband and i, lived in Blackpool for 19 years. We went to the now sadly demolished Hartes Crimbo shop, on Bond st, when we first arrived there, to get kitted out with tinsel @ baubles and of course our tree! Another place i used to frequent which appears on your vid, is a clothing shop on Lytham rd, where i used to buy some beautiful striped jumpers for myself. That too is now sadly closed, i see. The whole place is looking like a rubbish tip! ..... Thank you for showing us all, this video. xxxx
My freind money and greed is the killer of life and its rife if you have nothing you are nothing where has the human kindness gone. One word greed😤 keep up the good work m8 luv ya 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Cheers pal I agree with you 100% the big corporations drain all the money from the local people to feed their wealthy lifestyle on the backs of working-class people normal people.
I am from Blackpool, yeah it's not great and has some of the worst poverty in the UK. But would rather live here than London/Birmingham hands down. With the right investment and a lot of time it could be a great place again
Yes, the town has it's problems - as you say, worst poverty in the UK. Despite staycations, UK holidays loose out compared to overseas, so less tourists visit Blackpool than used to. It is the tourists who bring the money in. But with less tourists, less business for Hotels/shops/etc and if theres no business, they will close. The council does invest in the town, but theres only so much money. One of my former schools has been massively expanded and the other totally rebuilt. There are some smashing areas of Blackpool - but no town is paradise all over.
Yes I agree 100% all round the UK there is towns and cities where it is forgotten and it's only pumped money into the rich and wealthy areas and the council's and the government forget about the people the working class people who make this country great.
Thanks for posting this video, I was strongly considering a trip to Blackpool as I have a lot of nostalgia from my childhood and many happy memories of holidays there. I think I will make my holiday plans for elsewhere though.
Shame about the streets behind.I stay at the Travelodge Blackpool Football ground or a B/B near Central Car park.Often walk those streets on my walks when in the Town.Going back to the 60's 70's those backstreets were where you walked to avoid the crowded front. Great shopping areas too.
Its a shame and rightly called out for what is really happening in the Uk not only in Blackpool. The Government we have had for several years as got to be changed hopefully with Johnson gone things will get better. As you say our homeless and veterans is a disgrace for this country how they are left while thousands of illegal migrants are being let in the country going to 4 star hotels and then finding accommodation. This is the main problem over population Councils up and down the country are to blame feather their own nests and money not going where its needed for the people of Blackpool. Cheap labour being brought in Government and councils and do gooders who think more of migrants and foreigners than their own kind. Its not only Blackpool in decline its a lot of areas in Britain and if something doesnt change and fast Britain will be a third world over populated country and god help the next generation. You are right to call it out like it is, and I also follow "Walk on the Wild Side, Stephen" who also tells it like it is, The Truth.
I love Blackpool. I witnessed back streets like on your video. I didn’t think there was so much dereliction. I stay at a place called The Park House hotel it’s lovely for anyone wanting a change
It is a real shame how the council have let certain areas become so run down especially the areas between Lytham Road and the Promenade and around Waterloo Road/Bond Street and also the areas behind the North Shore and behind Talbot Road There are numerous causes of this including decline in tourism especially weekly/fortnightly stayers. Focus on the promenade to the detriment of places like Bond Street which even 10 years ago was still bustling. Most seaside resorts are the same. Blackpool was always fortunate in that there used to be a lot of industry as well, however that has declined increasing levels of poverty.
We were in Blackpool just a few weeks ago. And we sadly agree with you that the places we once liked. Such as the shops in Lytham Road. And Waterloo Road. Are so derelict, fire damaged, and boarded up. It will very likely put future holiday makers to stop having any more holidays in their hotels, and guest houses. We remember the Wakes weeks holidays that we used to enjoy. What is Blackpool Council doing to rejuvenate their Town. So we can return to enjoy more holidays there. Because at the moment our answer has to be NO!!. thank you.
Sadly I agree with you and it's sad to see all the shops closed down especially all the cheap £1 till the shops I'm spent hours in there in, I am planning to go round Wales next year. Thanks for watching
Blackpool has always had a reputation of being cheap and tacky and i guess when thats all that is on offer people can easily find better places to go and spend their money. You can get far better value for money in so many other places than in what appears to be a town that never left the 1970's
Whatever happened to the clubs. The Pelham mount, the no1,the central club, the catholic club and the Leyton institute. There was a time if you weren't in them by 7oclock you couldn't get in
I brought my family down for the first time in 3 years, and I was really upset by the changes I saw. We spent an actual fortune while there, and have nothing to show for it. It was a huge money grab. And it's hard to see where the investment goes...shops etc that were boarded up and derelict last time we came down and years before that, still derelict and even more run down. The front has gaping wounds in the shape of derelict hotels. The back streets are awful. I work in the third sector and deal with poverty in my home town on a daily basis. Seeing it in Blackpool had me reading council reports and strategies on day 3 of my holiday to see what the fudge had gone wrong. What hit me hardest was seeing all the placques etc in memorial to people who had enjoyed blackpool and had sadly now passed on. It made me really sad for a Blackpool which is now gone. I have so many good memories.of visiting every year with my family since I was very small. Bringing my own children was an experience we sadly won't be repeating.
Great reading Genna and I've heard similar stories from similar people it's so sad to see of a once glory childhood memory destination going downhill rapidly and it's not just Blackpool it is starting to filter on in other parts of the UK
Thanks for the video it’s like everyone you got nice area’s and Ruth parts yes when me and my partner come for a weekend in Blackpool we like too Drive round the back parts seeing where people live.it’s not nice seeing houses empty or business hotels shut. it’s sad.
I think it’s so sad I’m 74 years and we always went to Blackpool for our holidays what great times we had every bank holiday and the factory fortnight the golden mile it seems like the hole country is going to the dogs glad I was born at the right time ❤
I think these shop that are closed with goods still in them have went bankrupt, however council's up and down the length and breadth of the country are experiencing the same problems, so its really not alone.
It's happening all over the uk the decline in retail the decline in the old shops, Everyone buys everything online now and loses a magic of purchasing something in the shop
The problem with those new houses unfortunately is who can afford them? The social housing needs to be done up to make people not feel disenfranchised and left behind. Instead private property gets built and filled with people who often hold prejudice against those from a lower socioeconomic background and the divide just continues to widen. Blackpool's homeless issues need addressing too. However having one government after another who don't care about social investment makes my wishes feel pie-in-the-sky. Thanks for this great video as it was honest without being at all stigmatising 👏🏼
The big earner for Blackpool was every autumn, the TUC and one of the major political parties would hold a conference, book up all the hotels and keep the pubs and restaurants busy. I notice they seem to prefer the big cities and by pass Blackpool.
It was worse 15 years ago when I first visited. I’ve been back 3 times this year and all I see are improvements. My town in Hampshire is far worse for empty shops, it’s just a lot cleaner.
What help to kill off Blackpool are the cheap package Holidays abroad as it now cheaper to spend a fortnight in the sun abroad then it is to spend a week in Blackpool especially with all inclusive holidays
We're woolworths used to be is a total shambles now can't believe how dilapidated that street is nicknamed steel city Street now, a nice buffet chinesecat bottom by church
@@Randomanddesperate Hi best Chinese is Happy House coronation street and Jade Delight on Bond street that's were we go everytime we are in Blackpool 👍
Hartes, which moved in after Woolworths, was my favourite shop in Blackpool, and yes, your are right. It's such a shame that the council concentrated on the front and forgot about the back streets. The real Blackpool.
Gonna be honest im moving to Blackpool soon and i knew about the backstreets of blackpool but coming from 1 bad place in Lancashire to another at least theres stiff to do in blackpool nothing to do where i am
Great video Random showing Blackpool as it is. Agree that we don't do enough for our veterans suffering PTSD and our homeless our tax payers money going elsewhere to support others... Some of those closed hotels could be utilised for them. It is a shame about Blackpool but great video Random.
I liked the permanent Doctor Who exhibition there, in the 1980's. As a kid, I remember it being a bit grotty, but didn't mind it - the annual switch-on of the lights was always amazing. Shame to see it now though, it looks desperate.
If. Nobody does anything about it there's not going be anything left in Blackpool it's sad to see it as it is all b&b s are turning into just bed for night no food me and my daughter went Blackpool in August the hotel was full of Ukraines we wasn't told this I like meeting other families wen we go away they were banging doors all night long it wasn't a holiday it was a nightmare it's going end up like Rhyl nothing
Unbelievable they don't do anything to the British tourists anymore that's why they all go abroad, l I'm thinking of going abroad and doing some youtube vlog s and leaving black blackpool behind
We took our Grandaughter to the Zoo a few years ago ,I was really disappointed 😞. It was not as we had expected run down and dirty. Why don't other vloggers show this side of Blackpool maybe they're ashamed.😞 Thanks for showing us the other side of Blackpool.☹️
As an American I can tell you I would definitely travel there! I love the grit of a city, I have no use for movie theaters and arcades. I want 1 pound burgers and have a laugh with locals in a pub.
We go to blkpool every year..we know what the backstreets look like. Sadly we can't do anything about it. It is sad to see but if we as tourists stop coming would it not make the problem worse?
I have not been to Blackpool since 2000/2001 and it wasn't that bad, me and my family always used to walk down the back streets to avoid the busy prom and EVERYTHING was open, shops, cafes, hotels and pubs? The backstreets were always busy. It is sad to see what's happened to Blackpool
Live in blackpool on back road and blackpool government what holiday makers stay where tourism stuff areas. When trip over the dark side of blackpool they what to run away
I was born and bread in Blackpool but after 40 years in the Armed Forces, there was no way i would ever return. Its run down and scruffy and las lacked investment for years. It attracts the wrong people.
little shops and b&b all suffered when council tried to rinse the tourist with all the parking charges i got a ticket unloading the car for minutes outside double tree in north shore, london got 20 billion pounds of the government last year, guessing blackpool never got a penny ☹️
My first holiday was in Blackpool. David bowie life on Mars was in charts. We used to go to bond Street fish n chips put bowie on . Great days . Still come down regularly for northernsoul . Now I go to zest of India for a treat . Fantastic restaurant been 50yrs so seen decline bigtime in Blackpool. Plus for me is soulsuite
It's a cheap and a tacky place, when u go into some shops u will realise what I mean, some people are rude including traders and people on the beach, poverty doesn't blame for attitude! Never spending a penny there again. Just been to Dorset Yarmouth, people were welcoming, money goes were its most appreciated! End off.
I'm at Blackpool on holiday & it's really, really got depressing, it's full of beggars & borded up shops. The shops that are open have put there prices up 10 fold to recoup what they lost in lockdown. A gingerbread man cost me £3:25 today in a coffee shop. I got told it cost £42:50 to enter the pleasure Beach but mobility scooters are excluded. I sat in my scooter outside the Manchester pub for 30 minutes waiting for pedestrian light to go green, it didn't so I had to take a gamble & cross the road.
Unbelievable 😁 the pricing people out of Blackpool, where's the good old days where used to have go to Blackpool lots of fun and excitement and it was cheap

Respect to your dad I bet he has a lot of stories to tell
All the money was snafffled up by the government and invested in the capital.
It has lost its way.
It once used to boast THREE railway stations to cope with the demande of holidaymakers, now it has one and a bit.
My first hotel holiday was Blackpool and that building has been demolished ( The Balmoral Hotel/Argosy )
Hotels knocked down everywhere now and others stand boarded up and empty.

Well what statement and very true, It's not just in blackpool it's everywhere, And my pet hates are mobile
I went to the air display tgeir and the rds were disgusting rubbish everywhere hotels shut down on the front
Unfortunately it's a sign of the times but have faith
I was brought up in Blackpool. Never went beach or lights. Went to Our lady’s school and lived in a dead end road called chestnut avenue. Then we lived in ash st. Then we moved down south. Best thing my mum ever did , it’s a seasonal dump.
There is some nice things about Blackpool but not many lol, I know it's lovely down south I need to go there some videos thank you for your comment
You have a valid point I don't know why they don't knock down these builting some of them been there centuries it looks like
Same in liverpool council spends millions in the city centre tourist areas yet go out side the city centre and the council do nothing for the poorer areas.
Absolutely disgusting council and politicians are completely corrupt
Sad but annoying with such a housing shortage to have so many derelict properties.
I’ve never been to Blackpool as I’m a London but I’m aware of other areas like for example
Jaywick in Essex which was a holiday resort
I remember visiting as a small child staying I. A caravan it is now poorest place in Britain and nicknamed Soweto on sea…but only 65 miles from the great Metropolis of London with its 8 million residents…
Thanks for you comment, you're absolutely right they could do some of these properties up and given for affordable housing for the young people, there haven't got chance now
Soweto on sea.. someone's got a sense of humour lol
Blackpool has certainly changed over the years and it's very sad to say it could be so much better than it is
Yes is ban now but was absolutely great in the 90's
@@Randomanddesperateit was great in the 90's and yes everywhere is going this way. There is a lot of wasters around
Great video I'm glad you filmed this 👍
My wife and I just returned from Blackpool yesterday, we had a great time but it breaks my heart when I see the back streets of Blackpool , Lytham road , Bond street, Central drive , Waterloo road , Coronation street are in such a state it's like something from a end of the world movie , I love Blackpool and went as a child and took my kids there , now my kids want to go abroad, Blackpool is expensive, our hotel was expensive for what we got and the breakfast was cheap produce , not value for money , I think Blackpool is getting worse every year , we visited Lytham the town next to St Anne's and it's beautiful compared to Blackpool , Lytham is full of rich people and it's another world compared to Blackpool yet it's right next to Blackpool .
I'm glad you have shown the other side of Blackpool because there are TH-cam channels that don't want to show that side ,
What do you think Blackpool will be like in 10 years ? I hope it gets better but I cant see that happening, look forward to your next video 👌👋
I dread to think what it's like in 10 years but I will still be doing doing TH-cam lol and you can follow my story if I'm still around, I really enjoyed reading your story about Blackpool and yes you're absolutely correct the younger generation don't wanna go to Blackpool unless it's for stag, everyone goes abroad because it's cheaper
@@Randomanddesperate not anymore
Thanks for the comment really appreciate it's like anywhere now in the world, looks like I've got another USA subscriber😁👍
I still don't understand why Blackpool got rid of two thriving markets , abingdon st and bonny st .
Exactly some of these old markets to really well but the counsellors don't like that they only support corporation giants
Same everywhere.
This is the reality check needed. Thankfully there has been more investment recently but more should be done for the local community. Great number of views, this is proof of how much videos like this matter. Thanks Random 😊
Super comment alerts, yeah I like to show the truth what's going on.
As a coach driver who used to do tours to Blackpool for years, yes the coach got broken in to. Years later nothing has changed and now the council letting the coach companies park for free this year, but no drivers are keen on parking on the coach parks. Sad it has come to this, because it was once a great place
Blackpool was a great place years ago but as you said it's certainly going downhill and I bet even coach drivers don't like going there
large retail parks and leisure facilities needed, bring industry back
@edwinturner1149 I don't think retail parks are needed, what is needed for the council to look after the homeless and vulnerable people in b/pool. The town is ok, it needs life put back into it
@@edwinturner1149 Large retail parks are community killers.
In some areas there is a big regeneration project happening in Blackpool ,but it will take time, slowly but surely it will be back on track I'm sure
There are some improvements which I noticed but overall and it's not just blackpool things are going down here
Very eye opening
Thanks for uploading this very raw and interesting video. It's certainly an eye opener and proof that there's always two sides to every coin. Keep up the good work 👍
I just wanted to show people the tube Blackpool what is Hidden behind closed doors
What is happening to blackpool, It's one of the staff said that to me what scare me
Yes very sad story indeed
I had holiday there in 1978
It was a magical place to
go it breaks my heart to see this video
I really hope that things will change in the future
I sincerely do
Glad you pointed out, that most of Blackpool’s issues arrived from out of town. Unemployed down and outs from all over the U.K., arriving in their droves, to occupy cheap former B&B’s and other suchlike properties.
Blackpool is a wonderful place and I have met plenty of great locals but as you say there are lots undesirables come out of town and spoil it.
I remember Bond Street being a hive of activity back in the day so seeing your video of how it looks now is a complete shock!
Very sad
Sign of the times unfortunately
great chippy restaurants, fresh food to order, sad they have gone
Good on you to support Blackpool, there still is some nice places in Blackpool to visit and it's not all doom and gloom
Go to Whitby, Scarborough or better still Bridlington instead.
Will add it to my list thanks
@@lyndarichardson7276 I have been to all 3 of those. Whitby is incredible and it’s our family holiday location when I come to Yorkshire.
Yes go to whitby where captain Cooke set out and found Australia it a nice place.blackpool is full of drunk yobs
My wife and I always had a few days in Blackpool when the children were young in the 1980s, we all loved the atmosphere and the buzz. I went there 2 years ago and could not believe how the place had deteriorated , with drunks etc.
Years ago it was proud to be a family vacation a good old British holiday unfortunately Blackpool has gone down hill in recent times due to drunken behaviour stag do's and the unfortunate ones
it was an Amazing buzz in the eighties in Blackpool
Sad. Morecambe is the same. Thank you for sharing. It is important for people to be aware the problem.
Thanks AM interesting name
Morecambe was run down 25 years ago
I used to go on holiday in blackpool every year , havent been for a good few years now unfortunately, but I loved walking through the side streets as I found it a lot quieter than the seafront and I cant cope with crowds of people. loved the little shops and cafes little indoor markets .such a shame a lot have closed down .
There is still some nice places at the back street of Blackpool but not many and you gotta be careful where you go now
I grew up there in the 70s/80s and was shocked on my last visit. Lived just off Central Drive, went to school in Lytham rd and spent so much time in South Shore. I could have cried at how ti had changec.
I bet you do, absolutely disgusting, Blackpool has gone downhill lack of Investments all they do is concentrate on the tourist section
Blackpool: It's just a front.
It certainly is a front people don't go round the back streets
🤣🤣🤣
No. UK biggest theater with top shows. Pleasure Beach 1 of tip 5 🌎 theme parks. Fab ice show. Top circus & pantomimes +++
£billions of mostly private investment in year round entertainments. Space themepark with 3 hotels, 1 5*.
💯 😂😂😂😂
Blackpool has always been a dump....
It's not changed
My wife and I use to love a walk around the back Sts. Between The Viking hotel and Blackpool FC were some great little bargain shops. Last time we visited most of these little shops had shut down, very sad. Visiting in October for the lights.
I know where you mean, it's so sad to see all them bargain shops gone
Yup ,same for all small towns in the North of England, 70s and 80s were great ,late 90s and the neglect from government and mass immigration turned us into a clown show.
Miss the old days
Blackpool has deteriorated so much, streets where nothing is done and no investment the place is just going down hill, such a shame having had many a happy time there when I was younger. Thanks for uploading but, unfortunately, I can’t see any hope for it now.
You never know what's round the corner hopefully Blackpool improves fingers crossed anyway
Many tourist cities have this issue of having a council that only care about the façade, Gloucester is similar.. a lot of money is spent on the area around the cathedral and less so the docks and the rest of the city gets neglected. Those that can afford it move to Cheltenham
What's the point in paying council tax when it's spent disproportionately
Because they are corrupt anyone who wears a tie and calls themselves a counsellor are corrupt
I’m not surprised. Building materials have doubled in price since that begun. You’d have to buy the site for nothing to turn a profit.
Double how are working people supposed to make a profit
@@Randomanddesperate well it depends where you are in the country. If you’re in the west end of London your main cost is the land, the construction materials are a small percentage of your costs. If you’re in Blackpool or South Wales then building materials become a major part of your costs. This is partly why you see empty derelict buildings in poor areas, the banks won’t lend developers money if the end product is worth less than what you spent.
I know someone that converted a building to flats on Topham street, it took almost two years and he just broke even. So two years of work for nothing. All the trades got paid though, so that’s something.
Sign of the times unfortunately
To be honest it’s not a “Blackpool problem” it’s uk wide … many towns have town centres that are now boarded up, with drug gangs and anti social behaviour a huge problem….
I think Blackpool has so many great features including its fab people and the huge investments that are being made should help it … People don’t go shopping the way they did, so new uses need to be found for all the town centre vacant units.
I ❤BLACKPOOL.
I'm still a big fan of blackpool, but as you say, it's not just blackpool, it is nationwide now
Blackpool used to be a great place to be when i was a kid back in the early 70s.
I was there only 2 years ago and sadly i just couldnt believe how bad the place was talk about urban deterioration.
It's certainly changed over the years, very sad to say but hopefully one day it may turn to the glory days
100% with you on that one remember it well in the late 60s early 70s, great place to visit lots of good memories
Went down bond st 1 year ago thought I was in Beirut dreadful place. What's happening in Blackpool is what happened to ryhl the place is bankrupt and being filled with over spills from Liverpool and Manchester
I'm afraid the whole country is going downhill, it is such a shame because I love this country it could be so much better it people tried
I'm only familiar with Blackpool, British Columbia. It has "welcome to Blackpool" and "come again to Blackpool" written on the same sign...
👍👍👍
I love the back streets it's where you find some of the less busier cafes ,boozers & hotels
It does have its unique characteristic, I always enjoy the backstreet 😁😁
Respect you so what you done for this country. Thank you for your nice comments about my content
I hear similar stories like your own it's such a shame to see as we've all had so many happy memories of Blackpool and it's certainly gone down hill
loved blackpool 40 yrs ago but it depressed the hell
out me when i went 10 yrs ago. i was going to stay 6 days
but left after two.
There's certain nice hotels and certain nice areas in Blackpool if you know where to go
Just came back from visiting today, I couldn't believe how run down everywhere was! It was a bittersweet kind of nostalgia as we used to visit every year as kids and hadn't been there in almost 7 years. Its crazy how much of a front it is. It seems the council only invest in what the tourists put money into, unfortunately I don't think it will be long before the tourism stops 😞
Blackpool need to change or it will end up like Rhly a busy seaside town still 1990
All planned 😠
👍
give it 20 years,,there are nice areas around worth living, but the main body of the centres surrounds are more than dire
If your rent is paid might as well live by the sea.
COUNCIL for years in the pockets of those who own the seafront events, Golden Mile and one particular Family. Refused DisneyLand coming 30+ years ago. No investment in Industrial Parks etc. etc.
Absolutely agree
Unfortunately a lot of places are the same now newquay in Cornwall springs to mind
What is happening to the UK where are all the traditional seaside what we remember
Gone
Blackpool used to feel like a magical place when I was a child. We used to go twice a year living in Preston when I was little and now I take my kids there and its not the same. You can see the deprivation and its only one block away from the golden mile
Yes buts it's still a special place and always in our hearts ❤️
I first went to Blackpool summer 2000 and the backstreets were decaying then - I’ve been several years since and noticed the further decay - hotels that use to be so grand 20 years ago now being demolished- it holds a lot of sentimental memories with my mother and father , I’ve not been since 2018 but I am thinking of going this year
It's definitely worth going as you said have them lovely memories worth a visit, but pick your hotel carefully
Dylan Thomas said this about Swansea, his home town It's appropriate for Blackpool too - “An ugly, lovely town ... crawling, sprawling ... by the side of a long and splendid curving shore. This sea-town was my world.”
I love the beach in Blackpool, the lively pubs, and "interesting" nightlife, but I was shocked how run down was when I first visited.
I know Blackpool now it has changed if you have a fancy some sightseeing something different in Blackpool just go on street back
I feel like that about my hometown. You can always look to Dylan Thomas for human-ness.
The whole place is looking like a rubbish tip! ..... Thank you for showing us all, this video. xxxx
You're welcome
My freind money and greed is the killer of life and its rife if you have nothing you are nothing where has the human kindness gone. One word greed😤 keep up the good work m8 luv ya 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Cheers pal I agree with you 100% the big corporations drain all the money from the local people to feed their wealthy lifestyle on the backs of working-class people normal people.
I am from Blackpool, yeah it's not great and has some of the worst poverty in the UK. But would rather live here than London/Birmingham hands down. With the right investment and a lot of time it could be a great place again
You should be a counsellor of Blackpool we need more people like you for positivity 👍👍👍
What was the finger pointing at in that derelict place? Couldn't make it out.
I've done that many many videos I can't remember sorry
It's still worth a visit to be honest with you but don't stop too long 😁😁🤣
Shame about the streets behind.I stay at the Travelodge Blackpool Football ground or a B/B near Central Car park.Often walk those streets on my walks when in the Town.Going back to the 60's 70's those backstreets were where you walked to avoid the crowded front.
Great shopping areas too.
Wish I had a time capsule to see it in the 60s
You are right to call it out like it is, and I also follow "Walk on the Wild Side, Stephen" who also tells it like it is,
The Truth.
I think things are going to get worse before they get better, and I can't think of a solution what could solve the problem
that’s what you get for joining the armed forces, might as well live on the streets to start with
I love Blackpool. I witnessed back streets like on your video. I didn’t think there was so much dereliction. I stay at a place called The Park House hotel it’s lovely for anyone wanting a change
I've heard that's a good hotel might have to check it out
It is a real shame how the council have let certain areas become so run down especially the areas between Lytham Road and the Promenade and around Waterloo Road/Bond Street and also the areas behind the North Shore and behind Talbot Road There are numerous causes of this including decline in tourism especially weekly/fortnightly stayers. Focus on the promenade to the detriment of places like Bond Street which even 10 years ago was still bustling. Most seaside resorts are the same. Blackpool was always fortunate in that there used to be a lot of industry as well, however that has declined increasing levels of poverty.
Exactly 100% I am going back to Blackpool soon and will be filming with an area you recommended.
Just like Atlantic City here in the US. Seaside town with nice casinos but poverty all around. We have our Blackpool too!
Unfortunately the world is changing
Use to holiday in Blackpool, but don’t think I’ll return anytime soon
😔 it may be worth a day trip sometime in the future
@@Randomanddesperate I’ll keep away from the back streets if I do
Blackpool has always had a reputation of being cheap and tacky and i guess when thats all that is on offer people can easily find better places to go and spend their money. You can get far better value for money in so many other places than in what appears to be a town that never left the 1970's
1970 I like that 😁 I can only imagine it's going to get worse
7 pound burgers down south, 3.50 chips...better value..no way

It's called levelling up. It's happening all over the country. I spent many happy visits to Blackpool. This is so sad.
It's very sad to see the forgot part of Blackpool
Whatever happened to the clubs. The Pelham mount, the no1,the central club, the catholic club and the Leyton institute. There was a time if you weren't in them by 7oclock you couldn't get in
Unfortunate the world has changed now not for the better, they're still interesting pubs around the streets of Blackpool but not like they used to be.
Thanks for the video it’s like everyone you got nice area’s and Ruth parts yes when me and my partner come for a weekend in Blackpool we like too Drive round the back parts seeing where people live.it’s not nice seeing houses empty or business hotels shut. it’s sad.

I think it’s so sad I’m 74 years and we always went to Blackpool for our holidays what great times we had every bank holiday and the factory fortnight the golden mile it seems like the hole country is going to the dogs glad I was born at the right time ❤
Hopefully time it will get better
I think these shop that are closed with goods still in them have went bankrupt, however council's up and down the length and breadth of the country are experiencing the same problems, so its really not alone.
It's happening all over the uk the decline in retail the decline in the old shops, Everyone buys everything online now and loses a magic of purchasing something in the shop
I’m still can’t understand why Blackpool should’ve follows a brilliant seaside towns like Southport & Brighton etc.
Especially all the money it makes from tourists
The problem with those new houses unfortunately is who can afford them? The social housing needs to be done up to make people not feel disenfranchised and left behind. Instead private property gets built and filled with people who often hold prejudice against those from a lower socioeconomic background and the divide just continues to widen. Blackpool's homeless issues need addressing too. However having one government after another who don't care about social investment makes my wishes feel pie-in-the-sky. Thanks for this great video as it was honest without being at all stigmatising 👏🏼
Thanks unfortunately I am like you I have no faith in the power what governs us.
The big earner for Blackpool was every autumn, the TUC and one of the major political parties would hold a conference, book up all the hotels and keep the pubs and restaurants busy. I notice they seem to prefer the big cities and by pass Blackpool.
Yeah can't understand it as blackpool is still fantastic
It was worse 15 years ago when I first visited. I’ve been back 3 times this year and all I see are improvements. My town in Hampshire is far worse for empty shops, it’s just a lot cleaner.
Maybe a visit 👍👍👍. I still come a fews time's a a year with my children still in my heart this palce
Does anyone else remember the original Uncle Toms Cabin.
The one near the Doric Hotel near the cabin Lift queen prom
I remember when Uncle Tom was a lad.
What help to kill off Blackpool are the cheap package Holidays abroad as it now cheaper to spend a fortnight in the sun abroad then it is to spend a week in Blackpool especially with all inclusive holidays
I know I go every year to Blackpool and it cost a small fortune especially if you got kids
We're woolworths used to be is a total shambles now can't believe how dilapidated that street is nicknamed steel city Street now, a nice buffet chinesecat bottom by church
I've never tried that place might put it on my to-do list
@@Randomanddesperate Hi best Chinese is Happy House coronation street and Jade Delight on Bond street that's were we go everytime we are in Blackpool 👍
will add it to my list
Hartes, which moved in after Woolworths, was my favourite shop in Blackpool, and yes, your are right. It's such a shame that the council concentrated on the front and forgot about the back streets. The real Blackpool.
100%, I've just visit Rhyl and I could see how they have started improving the local area Blackpool needs to do the same.
If it wasn't for knocking the shops and grow houses Blackpools economy would tank
Yes a good point there but we need to stainable jobs
I love Blackpool I go there every year a few of us from cardiff it’s very sad to see boarded up buildings in a place that was once thriving
I too have a Passion for Blackpool as it holds so many memories so many good family Hopefully in the future it changes
Gonna be honest im moving to Blackpool soon and i knew about the backstreets of blackpool but coming from 1 bad place in Lancashire to another at least theres stiff to do in blackpool nothing to do where i am
How I can say is welcome to Blackpool
Thank You for talking truth to the people.
Your welcome pal
Great video Random showing Blackpool as it is. Agree that we don't do enough for our veterans suffering PTSD and our homeless our tax payers money going elsewhere to support others... Some of those closed hotels could be utilised for them. It is a shame about Blackpool but great video Random.
Absolutely Great Britain needs to wake up, charity begins at home
totally agree mate , the way we treat our service men and women is disgusting , all wrong !!
It really boils my blood how we treat our marvellous loyal royal service
I could imagine Blackpool Tower sticking up out of the water as a result of rising sea levels...
What I thought, something what nightmares are made of. But you never know no with the rising tide situation
I liked the permanent Doctor Who exhibition there, in the 1980's.
As a kid, I remember it being a bit grotty, but didn't mind it - the annual switch-on of the lights was always amazing.
Shame to see it now though, it looks desperate.
I'm still a fan of Blackpool even if it is still let's just say gone downhill still lots of history but needs improvement desperately
The guy who ran the exhibition centre, David, died in 2017.
"A Country Fit For Heroes" ? Thanks for the Upload keep up the good work.
Thanks pal, it's a shame how they treat soldiers my brother was a soldier I remember how they treated him
@@Randomanddesperate it's almost as if there's this culture of shame when it comes to having served in the armed forces
Should have asked for a refund.
Thanks Lorna that's a nice name, most TH-camrs show the fun side of Blackpool I like to show the truth
As an American I can tell you I would definitely travel there! I love the grit of a city, I have no use for movie theaters and arcades. I want 1 pound burgers and have a laugh with locals in a pub.
Well if you definitely go there you'll definitely have a laugh and the locals will always welcome you
We go to blkpool every year..we know what the backstreets look like. Sadly we can't do anything about it. It is sad to see but if we as tourists stop coming would it not make the problem worse?
I agree hundred percent that's why i'm always there
I have not been to Blackpool since 2000/2001 and it wasn't that bad, me and my family always used to walk down the back streets to avoid the busy prom and EVERYTHING was open, shops, cafes, hotels and pubs? The backstreets were always busy. It is sad to see what's happened to Blackpool
It's still worth a visit to Blackpool it's changed a lot but hopefully one day it improves
So depressing. It's difficult to imagine ever getting out of this.
Unfortunately it's not just Blackpool it's everywhere and it's gonna get a lot worse unfortunately
Live in blackpool on back road and blackpool government what holiday makers stay where tourism stuff areas. When trip over the dark side of blackpool they what to run away
Tourist is shocked when they go one Street behind the prom
I was born and bread in Blackpool but after 40 years in the Armed Forces, there was no way i would ever return. Its run down and scruffy and las lacked investment for years. It attracts the wrong people.
It's quite a shock change of scene from the seafront
It's so sad. To see how the poor and down and out Live.
Especially from a rich nation like us
My grandma lived at 142 Waterloo road. The best times of my life 💜
👍
little shops and b&b all suffered when council tried to rinse the tourist with all the parking charges i got a ticket unloading the car for minutes outside double tree in north shore, london got 20 billion pounds of the government last year, guessing blackpool never got a penny ☹️
There need to start spending money on black millions please
My first holiday was in Blackpool. David bowie life on Mars was in charts. We used to go to bond Street fish n chips put bowie on . Great days . Still come down regularly for northernsoul . Now I go to zest of India for a treat . Fantastic restaurant been 50yrs so seen decline bigtime in Blackpool. Plus for me is soulsuite
You must have some great memories of Blackpool and some great stories
It's a cheap and a tacky place, when u go into some shops u will realise what I mean, some people are rude including traders and people on the beach, poverty doesn't blame for attitude! Never spending a penny there again. Just been to Dorset Yarmouth, people were welcoming, money goes were its most appreciated! End off.
An excellent point pal will add Yarmouth to my list cheers for the tip
I should move there and open up a plywood shop.
Sounds like a good plan to me random approval
