I really appreciate the rejection of the 'audiophile' mindset and all that it implies. I still have an 'entry-level' NAD amp with a Project Debut3 turntable and the setup has worked great for me for over 20 years. In the past couple years I have upgraded to some Elac tower speakers with Klipsch subwoofer and for me, the system sounds incredible. I have tried to steer clear of the hi-fi online community as there seems to be a lot of toxicity and a real competitive mindset. Your point of view is so much more in line with how I feel about music listening. So thanks!
Just wanna leave a comment to say that I love your style of podcasting. I'm not sure if this was planned but the way you explained everything felt so natural and spontaneous but still super well thought out???? I rlly relate to this, not so much with audio, but with smartphones (as a tech geek). I often have to catch myself to say that as long as it works and you can afford it - it's good enough. The foundation of as long as you enjoy the music ~ as long as you enjoy the music ~ is something that I really need to do better of instead of just focusing on the specs and the tech. I hope you keep posting on YT, Derrick!! You have a fan from the Philippines 🇵🇭
Thanks Luis!! I have dot point themes cos I don’t want to meander too much. But it’s off the cuff/unscripted if that makes sense. And exactly - specs are the hobby part. Gotta prioritise!
I like the message here. It's about the journey rather than the end result because if you don't enjoy and personalize the sound to your own tastes then maybe (just maybe) it's not being done for the right reason. Also the overarching theme of enjoying the music (first and foremost), introspection, approaching with enthusiasm and learning along the way.
Very, very, very, very good guidance. So rare in these realms. Toxic mainly by the competitive edge presenting influencers, toxic to budgets, toxic to FOMO genes, toxic to people reacting even more toxic in return. While all of it is just noice and within all that noise is some few great contributors, like this here. There‘s no honest/reasonable way through this industry. Just pick something good enough for you to enjoy the pretentious replica of music in a way that is fun, personal enjoyment. It can even be had with a Tivoli One. Yes, unbelievable, but yes, our gear in the 70s/80s was worse than that and we loved it to death, listening to our favorite bands.
I feel like this is entirely applicable to consumerism as a whole, either that being overconsumption or elitism. There must be more that I’m leaving out, but this is what I have noticed.
Idk if I agree that quality is necessarily a luxury. You can get high quality sound with very low (relatively) cost. I’ve been collecting gear for over 6 years and I’m quite poor. I make less than 30,000 a year and have a system that most people would be plenty happy with. You don’t need massive $3,000 la scala in order to have “hi end” sound. Having La Scala’s definitely is a luxury, having an incredible sounding system is not.
I’m more interested in audio fidelity and various implementations/monitoring solutions that go beyond music or even ambisonic projection. I began pouring more time into it as I wanted a solution for gaming audio that also satisfied general purpose and music/sound/foley/vo production. When you have that many categories to fulfill it becomes a part of your lifestyle.
Honestly my mate spent like 5k installing full JL audio speakers/sub and a crazy JL amp in his car and I’ve never experienced music quality quite like it. That shit is so clean. The other time was the Funktion 1 sound system at Dekmantel… unmatched. Sadness creeps into my heart whenever i have to listen to music on my shitty pioneer pa’s. Alas.
I was so stoked to hear funktion ones at a music festival in southern California but unfortunately the room had hard floors and ceilings so it sounded incredibly boomy. I know on one hand that’s how techno is supposed to sound but I couldn’t shake the feeling that line arrays sounded WAY better
One time I spent MONTHS researching over ear headphones and 1 week after I bought them my cat ate through the wire. I don’t care about the sound I hear anymore unless it’s in my car…I’m a lil snobby about that.

Thank u for sharing this! That’s it - it works great and most people have other things to care about. Do you!

Amazing comment.
epicurean elitism is a slippery slope. I’ve found the need to make effort to cultivate my gratitude toward the everyday experiences.

Derrick, you’re awesome
Love this video and the message. Similar journey. I also had the Sony record player from Dick Smith. 😄

You enjoy music first, and you’re not at all obsessive in personality. “Audiophiles” love equipment first, and music comes somewhere after that.
Wonderful talk! Really got me yearning for my old click wheel ipod and minidisc players!
Did minidiscs ever make it big in Australia or for you?
Did it make it big anywhere? Haha. I had one!!
do u watch tv with the lescalas?
How can I become a DJ? I do everything (mixes) on my laptop.

Do you have a SICK SYSTEM??
