I’ve been using a system like this for over 10 years for my internet use in my pole barn. Can watch my smart tv and use TH-cam with my ROKU STICK. Can also use it to stream music to my Bluetooth speaker in my overhead led shop light. The unit I use is manufactured by TP-link and doesn’t require Ethernet cable. Speed is a lot slower than inside the house, but works great for what I need.

Thank you! My husband just built his garage a month ago, and I have been trying to find a way to get wifi in there for him for his birthday 8/9. Just in time, thanks again!
Built my shop in 2004 it's a metal building had Wi-Fi till I got to the door. This video was very helpful and that we have a lot of games that are played and things that are internet. Thank you sir for your video I'm going to try this if it works for you as good as the video shows. I will be doing cartwheels in the yard thank you for your video.
I learned to wrench on stuff with my Dad on his various car and bike projects over the years. The idea of picking up junk to gather misc hardware is genius. Can't wait to give my kids stuff to tear into that i'm not worried about them destroying haha. Thanks for the info, you've gained a sub!
Fantastic video! Thank you for explaining the power coming from different meters. I have my barn on a separate meter. I was able to understand quickly that that wouldn't work for me! I bought ethernet cable and dug it in the ground to my barn and hooked to a new router. Great video!
I had problems with wifi in my garage. I bought one of the AC outlet receiver kits. It works fine with an old router. I thank you for the advice on this Item. I'm glad you found this item our I would be without service. Again I thank you very much.
Thank you for making the exact video I needed to see to solve my problem of poor wifi to my garage/studio! The equipment was less than $80 total (I have the TV already).
this is brilliant for home automation/monitoring. I have the same one service-> child panel setup with a metal building... don't feel like laying conduit and cable. This makes so much more sense. EVEN BETTER- I can finally put that baddy security camera on top of the light pole next to the coop! and watch chickens/control heaters/lights etc inside the coop. Sorta too cool. Love you got young ones wrenching. How I spend my years any chance I got- still do.
We are 135 miles away from our other home and keep an eye on it through wifi cameras. All it cost was the purchase of the camera system, and internet service. Nothing else in several years. Already paid for itself by stopping a burgulary.
I head to TH-cam for just about everything. Mostly auto/appliance repair. When I saw this video, you got another sub. I need something in the shop. Plugin wifi extender doesn't do it. I just spent over a half hour on the phone with 3 different people, besides the first robot, asking my internet provider how much to run a cable 100 feet. I hung up after the fourth transfer. Thank you.
Good deal! If you decide this is the right system for you, please use the links in the description and I’ll earn a little commission from Amazon. Good luck! 👊
Thank you Sir for this video. Just bought a new house with a pole barn. Wife’s business will operate out of it and our home wifi didn’t reach. Was going to do a mesh system but said let’s try this instead. Within 10 mins it’s up and running.
Awesome video. I am buying that setup. My tip for you is put your TV remote in a zip lock bag to protect it. If you have the right phone you can put a air tag in the bag too. ( My remote fit in a snack bag, I zip locked and taped it shut with clear packing tape )
thanks for the info and idea. these things are great and i have the tp-link version in my shop. a big gotcha is that besides not plugging the powerline adapter into a surge suppressor, it also will not work in a GFCI. the tp-link docs say it has to be on the same electrical circuit, ie breaker and that is not the case. they never mention the gfci part. it works on a non gfci, non surge processor outlet off my shop subpanel which is about 130ft from my house panel. i get about 15mb up/down which is good enough for my needs. and ya, trying to watch how-to vids on a cell phone with greasy fingers is not fun.
I tried a powerline adapter and that didn’t work for my shop. Our well house is a secondary shop that it worked for for a short time but when it stopped I needed a new plan. For the garage shop that has metal carports that block the signal I ran cable for an access point device. For the well house shop I was able to use a mesh service. Those linked with my Starlink internets service has given me fantastic service all over the main part of our property 😊
I wish I would have watched your video 3 days ago. I had not Wi-Fi in the metal building. I would have to walk outside just to get a call. Yesterday, I mounted my new flat screen. I bought one with basic functionality. I didn't want to spend too much because we had no Wi-Fi. I just hooked up a HD antenna. I did get a good picture on 35 channels. I also depend on having the computer in my shop. So, I bought a TP link Wi-Fi antenna, I also picked up a usb extension so I could run the antenna through a small hole in the side of the garage. The antenna works great. I mounted a small plastic box on the outside of the garage for my cell phone. No cell service in the metal building. I use a bluetooth speaker to answer my cell. Next weekend we will work on the stereo. I will be waiting for your next video. An outhouse fit for a king.....
I found a power line wifi extender with wifi. Tplink tl-wpa7617 kit. I am getting 36-40 mbps in my barn. Barn is about 100 feet from main panel in the house. Barn is fed by an 100amp breaker off house panel. Data rate is good enough for 4k viewing in my barn.
Heads up: the speeds you get through powerline can be slower (but still useable) especially if your house is old. And you can sometimes use these on surge protectors, some surge protectors work with them, some don't. It's worth a try.
I so excited to find this video !!! I am going to copy your setup almost to a T. The links provided for the amazon items dont work they link to similar items but not the exact same ones you have. I purchased the Zyxel kit and it seems to be working, I just wish I could have got for what you said you paid. I'm in Canada and it cost me $115.00 but at this point I'll live with it
Thanks. Just what I wanted to know. I’m my house is limestone brick and my studio is concrete shingles. Only enough signal gets through to make me want more.
Great & informative Video, thanks 👍🏼 Did you have to do anything to the 2nd router like somehow connect it to your 1 in the house or was it just plug & play..?? Thanks in advance (anybody) 👍🏼
Wow, what a fantastic idea Lucus! Unfortunately, our cable company charges you for every TV hooked up on your property. Our cable bill is already far to expensive, so this won`t be very wise for me to do in my garage. I do have a very powerful WiFi unit set up in the house. I get a great signal on my lap top in our metal garage, which is approximately 75ft away from the house. I suppose i could stream it to a big screen TV in the garage, but the cable company would find a way to cheat us for having it.
I think part of my problem is my brick house blocks a lot of the signal too. That’s interesting that your cable company charges per TV. I’ve never heard of that. Thanks for stopping by!
We dumped cable years ago. Using OTA antenna for CBS, ABC, FOX and NBC. Movies we have prime , roku, netflix , paramount + not counting Prime membership we are paying $20.00 a month for add ons.
We have a remote rural location, and have starlink. We want wifi out in our studio/ workshop 200 ft from the house. Thanks for a straight forward video this helps.
How do you connect you router to the power line adapter? I get you plug it in but I can’t get my router to work with the adapter and broadcast the signal…
My metal building is about 300 feet from my cabin wifi source, and they share electrical power with a subpanel. Was there a distance limit mentioned with this equipment?
Is your shop heated? If not how is your router holding up in the winters? From what I'm reading below freezing can adversely affect routers and my shop is only heated if I'm working in it.
Been wondering everyone else push bridging , and external antenna. I wonder if i can use this to get service wifi from starlink router to barn by plugging one into router and other in garage to starlink node?Think ill try it.🎉Thank You
You didn't need another router as you will now be double NATed, you just needed a Wi-Fi access point. It will work but you will probably run into issues getting devices to communicate or port forwarding in the future.
Do you know if it’s possible to continue the chain on this (so to speak)? Like you, my husband wants wifi in our metal building shop (about 100’ from house, router/modem location), and I need wifi in our barn (about 300’) to monitor animals on Wyze cameras. I have no idea if you can extend the chain with a third box, and I assume that would require another router? Ugh. But if it worked, I would do it!
Hi Pete, I am working on finding a solution to my metal shop. Have you tested the speeds in your house vs in your shop? Do you think I could run a personal office off of the speeds that it delivers in a metal shop? I am really hoping that I could use this solution and scrap the Enthernet cable. Great vid 👌 👍🏻
I did do a test one day and the speeds showed about half as fast in the metal building. It is still fast enough to stream video fine. I also know they have higher speed units for more money.
I have the same unit. *Did you have to configure the AC100 for the home router for internet access outbound?* I also purchased a Wavlink directional antenna that sits on top of this for higher power in one direction.
the router you installed in the shop, if you connect to it on your phone is it the same network as the one in your main home? or do you have to disconnect from your main home wifi and connect to the shop one? asking because i want wifi in my shop but i want it to be the same network so when i walk out of my home it stays on one network once i enter my shop. im hoping your idea works for me
That’s a great question. So it requires a separate wifi router inside your shop so it would be a different network. That being said, my phone loses the house wifi signal when I walk in the building and automatically connects to the shop so it works pretty seamlessly.
Great info, I have exactly the same issue with my shop, it is a 25 X 50 metal building. I have to keep the door open for any wifi at all. I wonder if you would be so kind as to post the name and model number to the extender you used? The link was to Powerline a subscription.
Hahau damn it inshouldnhave watched this before i bought a extender to put in my garage will see of it works 😁 if not i definitely be doing this thanks 🙏👍🤘🤘🤘
I have a question?… please help 🙏 I live in a rural area and have internet in our house with a powerful router and it reaches to our garage which is all metal ! One thing the garage is about 75’ away from the house so I was wondering if I should use this system you are using to get internet in it? They don’t want a tv in there just the Wi-Fi.
If they are powered by the same electrical system then it would work. It does require a separate wifi router so my phone connects to the shop router while I am in there. Hope this helps!
Can you access the shop from the house or house from the shop without having to change networks? Or do you have to reconnect to a different network when you go from shop to house or house to shop?
I have a question ? The small black router , did you have to do any special set up on that ? I have my old Netgear & I haven't reset the unit so it still has the old password in it , do you think I have to reset it to the original password it came with ?? Help would be awesome & greatly appreciated thanks !!!
I don’t know that I can say for sure. I had a new router I set up in the shop. I don’t know why that would be affected though. I would think the original setup and password should work.
So if my electricity is on one meter but I have separate panels for the house and shop then this will work? Im assuming yours is the same set up? Thanks
Did this setup interfere with any of your devices inside the house? Since I hooked this up to get internet in my garage, one of our iPads isn’t working on our internet. The iPad IP address and router IP address changed on that iPad. All other devices in the house work perfectly.
@@PeeksPeakHobbyHomestead If you dont use extra router,Will the cell phone still work on wi fi..I clicked on the product and it said the ZYXEL Powerline Network is not available..I'm not sure what to buy now..Please advise
@@darrellvansell862 I tried the links and all of the items are still available. If you need wifi inside you building for your cell phone then you would still need a router as well. That is why I went with these products.
How far away is your garage from your house I have a house shed I don’t get a signal at all from my house and it’s not that close to the house but it’s using the same power line
So, I want to be able to get wifi in the garage at my apartment complex but I doubt my apartment shares the same electricity as my garage, right? In this case, this approach wouldn't work, right?
I put links in the description of the video. Distance doesn’t matter as long as they are served by the same electrical service…at least that’s how I understanding.
next time, take the TV's plastic protector layer last. you took it off firstand then laid the TV screen on your bench. hmmm BTW great video, entertaining and very informative. good job
Great video, just a couple of questions. Does your garage run off of a subpanel? In the garage, did you plug the ethernet cable into the WAN or a LAN port on the router/modem? Did you set up the modem as an access point or just as a second SSID?
My garage is a subpanel from the main house. As far as the internet, I don’t know much about the other stuff. I simply plugged the Ethernet cable into one of the ports on my existing router in the house and it worked.
I have the same exact problem, BUT, I have one electric meter that then splits off to two different main panels. I don’t think this system will work for me.
Greetings: A cheap "surge protector" should B OK 2 plug in the cient unit. Most cheap"Surge protectors" and strips that do not disply notice of EFI / RFI protection should pass the RF signal 2 the client. The voltage surge components have nothing 2 do with EMI and RFI. I would not trust cheap "surge protector" strips. They R generally a 1 time use and not effective on many types of surges. Thx 4 the share.
If for no other reason than you’re passing along wrenching to the next generation, I’m subscribing. Thanks for the Wi-Fi info.
Right on! Thanks!
I just added this setup for my home shop that is about 200 feet away from my house and worked no problem!!! THANKS!!

Does it matter which Port you plug into on the back of each Router..?? as in the 'WAN' or the 1, 2, 3 or 4 Ports..??
There are also adapters available that convert ethernet to a 2-wire feed, and then back to ethernet at the other end.
I am in same situation, and this will be perfect.

Sorry basic question. Do you connect the Ethernet cable to the WAN input of that router or just a regular Ethernet input?
I believe it connects in the WAN input.
Thanks for the reply! Trying this setup myself
Can you access the shop from the house or house from the shop without having to change networks? Or do you have to reconnect to a different network when you go from shop to house or house to shop?
You change networks, but for me, once I set it up on my phone it just changes on its own.
Thanks for the help!!!!
So you didn't have to do any computer configurations , so you just plugged in power cord & Ethernet cord & turned on ?
@@johnbart8454 I did not use a computer at all.
Ok awesome thanks for getting back super fast ! Really appreciate that very much !! Have a great day !!!
Is the router needed if the TV being placed in the shop is a SMART tv?
If the smart tv has an Ethernet port then you could bypass the router. We wanted the router for our phones as well.
So if my electricity is on one meter but I have separate panels for the house and shop then this will work? Im assuming yours is the same set up? Thanks
Correct one meter two panels is what I have.
Thanks!
@@PeeksPeakHobbyHomestead
thank you so much for this video.
Did this setup interfere with any of your devices inside the house? Since I hooked this up to get internet in my garage, one of our iPads isn’t working on our internet. The iPad IP address and router IP address changed on that iPad. All other devices in the house work perfectly.
I didn’t have any issues like that. Good luck.
Every thrift store usually has at least one router for under $10. I found five this week for $7 or less.
If the Smart TV you used would have had a ethernet plug in. Would you still need the extra router or could you just plug into the TV.
Great question! I believe I could have wired direct!
@@PeeksPeakHobbyHomestead ...Thanks I'll look again.
Will you also have wifi in the shop for other devices in your shop
Yes, we connect our phones and tv to it mostly…
What kind of internet speeds are you getting from the Powerline set up in the garage
I haven’t ran a speed test, but I regularly stream TH-cam and never have any issues.
Great video! I have the same situation, I have a metal building that's approximately 200 feet from the house. How far is your garage from your house?
Mine is close. Only about 100’ of wire, but I had someone comment that they used this setup on a building 200’ away and it worked for them. Good luck!
Great idea and cool product Lucas. I used the same thing many years ago before we got high speed/fiber optics internet. 🙂🙋🏼♂️👍🏻
Thanks, Luc! I was thrilled to find it!
Would this product work with my fibre internet?
My shed is about 500ft from the house
Same question my shed is bout 500 foot away also will this work
Man i loved this set-up, fir about 2 weeks rhen it stopped working, is your setup still running?
I hate to hear that. Mine is still doing great. 🤷🏼♂️
@@PeeksPeakHobbyHomestead I'm guna return for the same item, maybe it's just a bad unit maybe, thanks for the response and take care.
How far away is your garage from your house I have a house shed I don’t get a signal at all from my house and it’s not that close to the house but it’s using the same power line
My garage is pretty close, but I’ve seen replies from folks having success as far away as 200’.
Oh, just realized you aren’t using Starlink. Will this set up work with starlink?
I can’t say for certain, but I would think so…
And what do you do when your house is the metal building along with your shop
It doesn't sound like you have a problem at all and if you do then connect it in the house like he said and connect in the shop like he said.
What are your current speeds and what is the drop between locations?
I think the drop is around half. I don’t have any trouble streaming video I. The shop which is really my only use for it.
So, I want to be able to get wifi in the garage at my apartment complex but I doubt my apartment shares the same electricity as my garage, right? In this case, this approach wouldn't work, right?
I am going to doubt it. I’m sorry I can’t say for sure.
Great video. Can you provide the product links? How far can the home be from the garage for this to still work?
I put links in the description of the video. Distance doesn’t matter as long as they are served by the same electrical service…at least that’s how I understanding.
@@PeeksPeakHobbyHomestead Doesn't work for me at 133 feet
So do the router go to the tv for cable ?
I use wifi to stream on the TV.
see i want to do this but im worried my shed might be on a different circuit to the house so will it work?
It is my understanding that if they are fed by the same electrical panel, then it will work.
Does anybody know if my home router only has LAN ports, will the powerline adapter work?
next time, take the TV's plastic protector layer last. you took it off firstand then laid the TV screen on your bench. hmmm BTW great video, entertaining and very informative. good job
Didn’t work for me, I guess my shop is too far away at 700 feet. Sending it all back 😢
I tested it in the house first and it works good.
Sorry man, I didn’t know the limits.
In the router in the garage though which port is the Ethernet cable connected into? Thank you!
@@tuckedinshirt it would connect into the WAN port in the garage.
I have the same exact problem, BUT, I have one electric meter that then splits off to two different main panels. I don’t think this system will work for me.
@barnabasranch5415 I have the exact same split at the meter. It's been 9 months, have you tried it? Does it work? I hope it does.
Bro, I've been trying to figure something out like this for months.
So just to make sure i just plug them in i dont need to set it up on a laptop at all?
I have the same problem, except my metal building has solar power and not connected to the house at all
Well. My shop has its own power meter. Didn't watch long.
Where is the meter getting its electrical source from.
