    My bedroom is a deep red and a really deep green - both on the walls. At first, I was hesitant, because... Christmas. But it doesn't feel like Christmas, it is so satisfying and rich with all the houseplants. In fact, one of the walls where the plants are, would make a fun painting to paint. Thanks, as ever, for being the most amazing channel, community and resource. I put you all on in the background when I am painting, rollerskating and cooking. Current activity is all three of those things, on rotation. Using gouache for a landscape.

      Aww, thanks so much! :) And yes, there are some really lovely and cozy red and green palettes that successfully avoid the Christmas connotation. We'd love to see you make a red/green painting of your bedroom! -Lauryn, Art Prof Teaching Artist

    Idk if during the video someone says this(I'm at the start): the three primery colors are essentially the atoms of the color world in that they are the fundumental units of color, that's why you can't create them by mixing other colors.
    Red blue yellow are the original primary colors (I think from the renaissance), it was later found that you can mix red by using magenta and yellow, so the current primary colors are Magenta Cyan and Yellow.
    It's not that you cannot use the red,blue,yellow model- it works perfectly well for 99% of the cases, the only thing that you need to be aware of is that you cannot get magenta by mixing red and something else, so you'll have to buy it specifically if you want to use it.
    The other point to be aware of is that using the red,blue,yellow model will not let you mix colors with the same level of saturation as the magenta,cyan,yellow, but again you don't need that in about 99.999% of the cases.
    It matters more in printing, where getting the exact color is super important,I think.

    The question about magenta and yellow to make red, didn't explain the difference in "primary" colors for physical/mineral pigments and projected light, like when you mix primary color pigments, it goes dark/neutral, whereas with printing, digital colors, and light, primary colors are magenta, cyan, and yellow. When projected all together as light they make white light. For printing colors there is also the factor of scale. When you get super small dots of magenta and yellow then we will perceive a primary red color at the level we see it. Also in nature there are weird examples of microscopic black next to white actually create what we see as blue. It's complex when you really get into the details, but the guidelines in this video work for painting.

    What brand of Naples yellow do you use Alex? In Gouache, its difficult to find a light fast Naples yellow in the brands I have (Lukas and Schmincke).

    Magenta and yellow makes like... orange right ?

    • @artprof
      @artprof  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup! You could try making a color chart mixing red and yellow and then magenta and yellow to compare the oranges with each other, because they have pretty different characteristics. -Lauryn, Art Prof Teaching Artist

    For me, it's too formulaic. It's literally most artists that would put an orangey/warm shirt on the hypothetical figure against a blue background. It makes me NOT want to do it, because it seems like what 90% of artists would do, and maybe the percentage that wouldn't do it would be those who are ignorant of color theory/complimentary colors.
