    An unforgettable commemoration 💗
On October 19, 2024, the "EL Retro Gunma Kiryu" ran on the JR East network in a configuration consisting of the EF64-1001 locomotive, four vintage passenger coaches and the D51-498 steam locomotive. The traction locomotive ran between Takasaki and Kiryu.
Electric locomotive EF64 1001 was manufactured by Toyo Denki and Kawasaki Heavy Industries and inaugurated on July 3, 1980. It was painted in grape n°2 and white. The paint color was changed in March 1987. Unlike JNR's other electric machines, the EF64 1000 series has an asymmetrical structure on the sides, with the large blower flap located closer to the side of cabin n°1. Unit 1001 was reproduced in standard color and H white at the Takasaki public exhibition in October 2018. Unlike other series, such as 1053, H-white accentuates the blue around the windows.
D51 498 JR-EAST, a steam locomotive retired from service in 1972, has enjoyed a fine renaissance. Until 1988, it remained frozen in time, displayed in front of Gokan station on the Jōetsu line. Specializing in freight transport, Degoichi's D51 class began its career in 1936 and ended it in 1972, with some 1,115 units produced between 1936 and 1950. The 498^th D51 class locomotive was born on November 24, 1940 in the Takatori factory of the former Ministry of Railways (city of Kobe, Hyogo prefecture), and has been used in Okayama, Osaka, Fukushima, Niigata and other prefectures. It's a joy to see this machine restored and put back into service, and promised to tourist excursions.
I wish you an excellent weekend.
