    Franco Alfano (1875 - 1954) was an Italian composer and pianist, best known today for his opera Risurrezione (1904) and for having completed Puccini's opera Turandot in 1926. He had considerable success with several of his own works during his lifetime. Alfano was born in Posillipo, Naples. He attended piano lessons given privately by Alessandro Longo, and harmony and composition respectively under Camillo de Nardis (1857-1951) and Paolo Serrao at the conservatory San Pietro a Majella in Naples. Later, after graduating, he pursued further composition studies with Hans Sitt and Salomon Jadassohn in Leipzig. While working there he met his idol, Edvard Grieg, and wrote numerous piano and orchestral pieces. From 1918 he was Director of the Conservatory of Bologna, from 1923 Director of the Turin Conservatory, and from 1947 to 1950 Director of the Rossini Conservatory in Pesaro. Alfano died in San Remo.

    A delightful piece with a Franckian influence, yet very personal. All performers are convincing. BRAVO!

    Thank you for posting this. I am one of the performers on this World Premiere recording of Alfano's Piano Quintet, released by Naxos (8.572753). The same CD album also includes my recording of Alfano's Violin Sonata (world premiere recording of the original 1923 version) and an arrangement for violin & piano of 2 more Alfano pieces: "Nenia" and "Scherzino" (also world premiere recordings)

      Thanks go to you all for your pioneering efforts to explore the music of a composer who is only remembered for completing another man's opera. It's time his own works got their due. I was wondering about a particular work in his listing, called a concerto for violin, cello and piano. Is it a triple concerto with orchestra or a double concerto for violin and cello with a piano reduction that was never orchestrated?

      @@johannrufinatscha4210 The Concerto is a piano trio. We believe it is called Concerto because of its virtuosity. Either way it's a masterpiece.

      @Johann Rufinatscha -- Dear Mr. Rufinatscha, my colleague Mr. Samuel Magill registered the world premiere recording of Alfano's Cello Sonata on the same album where we also registered the world premiere recording of Alfano's Concerto (which, as Sam Magill pointed out, is a piano trio actually). This album (Cello Sonata and Concerto by Franco Alfano) was released by Naxos several years ago (8.570928)

      I really appreciated your effort to record Alfano's chamber music; they era beautiful recordings, so thank you!
      By the way, I have a question.. Alfano composed also three string quartets, but information about them is almost non-existent and obviously they are not recorded. Do you think it is possible that sooner or later someone (you and your colleagues, maybe, why not? :D) will make recording of them?

      @@gb-ko9bv --I am delighted to answer you question, as it so happens, that I am recording the 3 string quartets by Alfano in just 2 weeks (for the Naxos label) - with the same colleagues who recorded the piano quintet (minus the pianist, of course)

    Franco Alfano is famous for finishing Puccini' s Turandot.This is what Wikipedia is saying about him.As for me, he is as good, or even better, in writing chamber music. His piano quintet is in French style.I wonder, if his other chamber music is also sounding French?

    when this was actually composed in Alfano's life ?

    • @johannrufinatscha4210
      @johannrufinatscha4210  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It was completed in 1936. Alfano would have been 60-61.
