@Michael Srite He is from the Kerala just like me. Most of the state of Kerala was a client state of the British Empire and not part of British India. I forget the title, but there's a full book about the Emden that I used to own a copy of. One of the things I remember from it is some of the lyrics of a song written by the crew: "Schiff ohne Hafen, Schiff ohne Ruh, Fliegende, fliegende, Emden, du Kannst ja nicht sterben Du jagdt daher, Ewig dein schatten Über das Meer..." Which translates roughly into "Ship without harbor, ship without rest, Flying, flying' Emden, you cannot die so therefore you hunt, Ever your shadow Across the sea..."
Great video Jingles! Have stopped by the HMAS Sydney's mast on Bradley's Head several times here in Sydney and its cool to hear of what it is meant to commemorate. von Muller sounds an amazing man.
I loved this episode. Seriously, nobody does anything like how you fuse history and the game. I always sink back in my chair and know I'm in for a great experience when you start covering the historical aspect of something. Thank you!
Watching these video's are great! Not only a gaining video, but a history lesson all in one. If only these were in history classes; then it would have made it so much more interesting. Thank you for the entertainment and history lesson all in one.
I feel like instead of Adding a German Aircraft Carrier line, WarGaming should have a Tech Tree Line split Dedicated to the Kaisermarine. (The Seydlitz, the Derfflinger, the Vön Der Tann, the Prinzreget Luitpold, etc.) And add a feature like with that they did with the Pan-European, and the Pan-Asian Destroyers where you have a choice to either have the Krigsmaine battle ensign, or the Black, White, and Red Kasiermarine battle ensign (Like have the Choices with the Nassau, the Kaiser, the König, the Bayern, the Dresden, the Kolberg, the Karlsruhe, the V-25, the G-101, and the G-170.)
ww1 emden, 54 years old i remember reading on her and muller too.......two kickass favs' in one, emden! and the Jingles! i was instantly all over this video....thanks!
I did get the Emden the first time, when it was a mission or whatever prize with a port slot at the NA server. I thought: A fancy Dresden with a free port slot, well let's do that and after I play the damn thing I'll just sell the ship when I need the slot. I never sold it and I probably won't sell it. It's a good ship for a warm up round, drinking you coffee or tea, greasing your club with the fat from the "special" baby seals. Those glue and snot eaters just make for a good covering. Also, I did fancy HER history after I saw the iChasegaming review and look around for more details. I'm just not sure about the colors she's flying in the game.
Jingles. Although I have followed your videos for a couple of years I somehow missed this one. Very interesting. I thoroughly enjoyed your narrative and game play. Thank you very much and carry on.
Always loved the story of the Emden. I had an illustrated book called "Astonishing Naval Stories of WW1" that told the story of the Emden and her crew. What a screenplay that would make.
thankyou for this video Jingles. me being an Australian, i'd never heard of this battle between the Emden and Sydney (shocking i know). so again thankyou for a bit more of the history of the brave men and women who served in WW1.
Nice bit of history, like you I was appalled checking the stats when I first got the ship. But I also have found I enjoy playing it. Sometimes I feel bad for the other players as I am seal clubbing lol
Even better the Captain of the Landing party was against Nazis and war in general after his experiences in the Emden and in WW1. He did get into a lot of trouble with the Nazis, because he was so outspoken against them. Ironically only his title as a war hero protected him somewhat. He still managed to land himself 2 times in a KZ, only his status as war hero protected him somewhat.
Jingles, you spoke about the emden in one of your videos, i red a lot about it after that, facinating story, thank you i love to learn stuff like that ;)
One thing we seem to have forgotten today is just how hard it is to find one small ship in the oceans of the world. Without satellites, aircraft or radar available, one ship is nearly impossible to find, especially as many merchant ships of the day did not even have a radio to yell for help. The captain and crew of the Emden fulfilled their role perfectly and must be saluted for their courage and honor is keeping loss of life to a minimum. I do object to them being called pirates. They were sailors doing their duty, while a pirate is a cowardly murdering thief out for nothing but themselves. Pirates of the Caribbean movies make them look like the good guys, which they were not. One point counted against the design of SMS Emden. The German Navy's insistence on arming their light cruisers with 4.1 inch guns as opposed to the British who went to the heavier 6 inch weapons. In every encounter the British heaver broadside served them better and led to victory over Imperial German Ships.
I absolutely enjoy the historical details you put out on these. Naval warfare and gallantry are two of my favorite things. Now I use NVSurround so after the 0.5.5 patch the game became broken for me (unless I want to get rid of the NVSurround). So your WoWS videos are currently my only fix for WoWS... Keep em coming.
I havent been able to keep up with your videos in a little while with work and that whole Stellaris being released thing but as soon as I saw there was a new ship review/education I stop everything and check it out. Never disappointed!
My grandfather, who died in the 1970s', was on a ship in that convoy that the HMAS Sydney was escorting. He spoke of seeing the Sydney leave the convoy at full chat and wondered what was happening. It was later that they found out about the sinking of the Emden.
I read the stories about the Emden and Captain Muller about the same time you did Jingles and I anxiously awaited its appearance in the game on the NA server. I was not disappointed. While the in game Emden does not have quite the firepower of her sister the Dresden she is more than a credit to her namesake. It's all about the ROF. Chikumas don't scare the Emden. The Emden feeds on Chikumas.
Thanks for the this video. When I was a kid in the 70s I read war stories too, but somehow missed out on Captain von Mueller. Great story, I love heroes. Also thanks for explaining on the Chester. I am brand new to WOWS, have maybe 20 matches in and absolutely have my worst matches in the Chester. better understanding now of why
It is interesting to note that the replacement HMAS Sydney also battled against a German raider in WWII, the Kormoran, but this battle did not end so well. The Kormoran was an auxilliary cruiser, disguised as a merchantman and due to multiple factors, the Sydney approached too close and was raked by the Kormorans' guns and torpedoes at point blank range. Set on fire and holed, the Sydney returned fire, but was forced to break off the engagement and later sank with the loss of all hands. The Kormoran was also set ablaze by return fire from the Sydney and was abandoned by its crew before exploding and sinking.
It would seem that the captain of the Sydney closed right in, unsure that the ship he was approaching was hostile. The Kormoran had the advantage, as the captain knew he was going to ambush the cruiser and had his crew ready to open fire. Caught by surprise, the Sydney suffered serious damage before she was able to respond. See: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_between_HMAS_Sydney_and_German_auxiliary_cruiser_Kormoran
+Console Peasant Much more so. I won a match by a landslide and the entire team was congratulating an Atlanta for kicking our butts early on and carrying his team pretty hard.
Yes, I would like to see an average age of the player bases of both WoT and WoWs. I am sure the WoWs community is older and more mature. You still get toxicity in chat but not to the extent of WoT
Funny you say that. There is a surge of older people on World of Tanks Blitz which is surprising given the target audience. There are two clans comprised mostly of fathers, grandfathers and veterans. It's pleasing to see given the mature sportsmanship and camaraderie that isn't as prevalent in online gaming. Even in a loss there is quite often cheering and praise across both teams.
There is an island that both the Canadians and Danish think they own, how they fight over it is the Canadians take down the Danish flag and leave some Canadian whiskey and put their flag up an the Danish will come around and take down the Canadian flag and leave some schnapps for the Canadians
You won’t see polite war when you don’t even see the enemy. Nowadays you just hit them with an airstrike or missile. None of that “sparing” or “chivalry” nonsense.
Jingles, the stories never fail to amaze me. Your storytelling is among the best and as a History Major I thank you for doing it right. However - speaking solely in terms of pixel boats: All I see here is an Albany carbon copy (tier II premium one-trick pony)
Some of us do not do the 'premium' thing. WG has yet to receive a penny from me. I know when my regular ship is up against a premium ship I am at a disadvantage and play accordingly. Usually losing the encounter, but that is part of the GAME and I don't mind.
Thanks Jingles... Now I'm kicking myself for selling the Emden... I love German warships which is why I sold it because after playing the Kolberg I didn't want to get disappointed again by a German warship but now... I WANT MY Emden BACK!
Great video! I was completely unfamiliar with real history of the Emden. I will admit, like you, the stats kind of turned me off to it. Since I won the ship playing missions I decided to give it a shot. It's a fantastic little boat and I enjoy sailing it.
+BlitztheDragon There is a German movie about the Emden, but it's more about the voyage of the landing party. The actual ship gets very little screentime. It's still a nice movie.
I was born in Penang. There's a Russian memorial on the Esplanade, right on shore where the Zhemchug sank. They had a centenary of the Battle of Penang a while back with a Russian Navy contingent visiting the graves of those who perished. It's kind of a forgotten story here, to be honest. Most people have a greater interest in WW2, mostly due to there still being living memory of that conflict. I do believe there're still pieces of the Mosquet on display in the Penang museum as well. And the old Eastern & Oriental Hotel where the unfortunate Commander Cherkassov watched his ship go up in flames is still there, refurbished and once again serving as a hotel.
I really love the story of the Emden! Also yes I agree that the her captain should be viewed as a hero and not a villain! He did his duty and did it valiantly! That makes him and his crew true hero’s!
13:34 I get what you mean, some ships just FEEL right. on paper my new york class sucked but there was something about it and the wyoming which just came through for you in a pinch.
When I finally figured out what all of those ship name prefixes meant it all started to make sense. USS = United States Ship, so far so easy. HMS = His/Her Majesties Ship, depending on the regent at the time. SMS = Seine Majestät Schiff...basically it's just a straight translation of HMS because back then Germany was still a monarchy
Dammit Jingles, now everyone is gonna want the Emden. I won it for completing a challenge a few months back and take her out when I need a break. I thought about selling it-but each time her beauty stayed my hand. Now that I've learned the history of this ship (thanks!) I'm glad to have won her and she's definitely staying in my flotilla. The AP is absolutely useless fyi.
Jingles you should look up the fate of the second HMAS Sydney, the Leander class light cruiser. Quite a conspiracy-theory ridden end, and as an Australian I can say its a rather embarrassing yet tragic event as well. Considering we only had 6 cruisers in WW2 it was an enormous loss for our navy too.
Night Train123 yep, they pretty much knew where it was, but it was only discovered in 2008. I grew up in Geraldton which is where the main memorial is. During the first sounding of the Last Post (google it if you don't know) at the memorial sight a huge flock of seagulls flew overhead, so they built a dome made of 645 steel seagulls over the memorial for each of the sailors lost
I though you'd go more into the shore party and their trek to turkey. They had one hell of a long march as well as being attacked by Bedouins for three days before being relieved by the Emir of Mecca.
hey jingles do you happen to remember the name of the book you were talking about with all those war stories...sounds like something I would love to read
I was born and have lived all my life in Madras, a city in Southern India, and have heard about the Emden from my great grandfather. It shot at and reduced to rubble the top story of the Madras High Court and terrorised the fishing villages near Fort St. George, where the important British officers and their families used to reside. Like another person in the comments says, the Emden is still regarded as a powerful and evil entity to be feared. I apologise for my poor English.
I take it you've watched the The Great War special on the Emden? Here's hoping we see the SMS Möve in the game one day. Emden really has an epic story behind it. Makes you wonder where the Emdens torpedoes went...
G'Day Jingles, Two things - 1) When they brought down the wireless mast, they missed the tennis court - but instead smashed a cache of whiskey (talk about no good deed goes unpunished :) ). 2) HMAS Sydney signaled the SMS Emden three times (by flags, by lights, and finally in plain morse) before opening fire on the beached ship. Last one, three of SMS Emden's guns are on display, and I (personally) have had a good look over the one in Hyde Park in the middle of Sydney. Later, Matt
I still enjoy the story of the Emden and have loved thisship since my Dad got me a book on ships that featured a fold out elevation andplan in the prewar color scheme that is featured in the game. I was a little disappointed that Wargaming didn't let her have her fixed torpedoes. Ithink the Eden may have been the only ship to successfully use submergedtorpedo tubes to hit an enemy when she sank the Russian protected cruiser Zhemchug in Penang.
15:03 I don't often sail tier 3 and lower ships, but when I do, I sail the Aurora! I used to defend the honor of my Yubari, but since the skills have changed and she received no compensation whatsoever - I cannot any longer say that she is in ANY way a good ship.... But as I got the Aurora for just $6 with the port slot during a special deal about 2 months back, I decided I would give her a good try! And my god was I impressed! With her 11.2km range, she out ranges all other tier 3 and lower ships, and on top of that - while her AP is not as good as the St Louis, it has FAR better HE! It has the same rated max damage, but in a direct comparison Aurora HE does more damage more often for whatever reason, THEN she also has an extra 1% base fire chance at 8% (St Louis is 7%) which means that my Kutuzov/Murmansk captain brings that fire chance to 12%! TL;DR Aurora is a more Skill-Based version of the St Louis, because her armor is nowhere near as good and she has something around 4500 fewer Hit Points. But she turns on a dime, literally! I have dodged so many torpedoes in the 5 or so matches I have played in her that I quickly lost count! Her guns turn a good deal more slowly than even the St Louis, but not so much that it ruins the ability to keep 4 to 5 guns on target at all times even when turning on a dime! And finally she is more accurate than the St Louis, with the same dispersion at 11.2km as St Louis has at 10.7 - as such you need to make use of that range and accuracy to do well in her! If you manage all that, she is EASILY a more effective ship than the St Louis! Just with a little more emphasis on support. I kinda wish WG would add a dodge stat for torpedoes, it wouldn't be too hard, anytime you spot a torpedo within 2.5 km or less, and said torpedoes would hit directly if you had not pulled some evasive action - every torpedo that misses that otherwise WOULD have hit - if you were sailing totally straight without any course change or speed change!
I was born in a little coastal town in southern india which used to be part of the erstwhile Madras province in the british India. To this day there is a word in my native tongue malayalam 'Emunden' used to describe a giant and terrifying thing. This word'd etymology traces back to the SMS Emden that absolutely terrorized the madras coast. Apparently the fear of the ship was so much that suddenly rumors would break out that the 'Emunden' was sighted and entire populations would run away in panic. Truly an impressive ship.
-Source my late grand mother, who lived through both the world wars.
However the Emden was merchant raider, not a light cruiser. Potatoes, potatoes.
Pardon but as a German I must correct that definition. Emden was a Dresden-Class Light Cruiser so thus a true and proper commissioned vessel of His Imperial German Majesties Navy as opposed to a converted merchant cruiser
@Michael Srite He is from the Kerala just like me. Most of the state of Kerala was a client state of the British Empire and not part of British India. He is from a traditional Christian community of Kerala. Traditional Christians of Kerala are socially advanced class who served under native kings in high ranking government services and in the merchant fleet for many centuries. Before Portuguese discovered a sea route to West coast of India around the Cape of Good Hope there was a thriving Jewish and Christian community in Kerala. Portuguese forcibly converted many of us into Catholic faith but traditional Christians of Kerala are Syrian Christians ( Oriental Orthodoxy)
@Michael Srite Most of the south indians speak and write English well. As he said the word "Emden" in Tamil language means a terrifying personality.
@Michael Srite It's not about the caste here, it's about the literacy of the south Indian people and the major thing you need to know is all the indian people are not shitting in the streets, there are a lot of things a foreigner can't understand about india. Who else loves storytime with Uncle Jingles?
Especially when they are of the greatest pirate captain to sail the eastern seas.
Me
I keep coming back to this one, I love the Emden, and he tells the story better than any other, in my opinion.
Great story’s always, you learn a lot.
I think it would be fair to give Emden high concealment rating, close to destroyer, to honor her raider role and compensate her other poor stats.
Still loving the history lessons Jingles. Great video. Cheers
I forget the title, but there's a full book about the Emden that I used to own a copy of. One of the things I remember from it is some of the lyrics of a song written by the crew:
"Schiff ohne Hafen, Schiff ohne Ruh,
Fliegende, fliegende, Emden, du

Which translates roughly into
"Ship without harbor, ship without rest,

Great story about Von Muller and the Emden, thanks for sharing that good sir!
One of Emden's guns is now mounted in Whitlam Square in Sydney - corner of Oxford and College Streets. Pass it every day.
wow!
i was wondering where the gun is from every time I pass while commuting
I've got to see that.
you can see battle damage on it as well been there for hundred years now
Watching these video's are great! Not only a gaining video, but a history lesson all in one. If only these were in history classes; then it would have made it so much more interesting. Thank you for the entertainment and history lesson all in one.
+Myron Metanchuk you should check out the other ones he's done on ships and tanks, way more interesting than other youtubers reviews
thesherbet I've seen them as well, thanks.
Bravo Jingles.Une reportage d'excellence Monsieur. You are very well documented as well as very enjoyable to listen to.
Oh, the Emden. This was the first ship us Australians sunk in combat! :D
The SMS Emden should be flying the Imperial German Navy's white ensign not the Krieg Marine's red war flag.
I feel like instead of Adding a German Aircraft Carrier line, WarGaming should have a Tech Tree Line split Dedicated to the Kaisermarine. It also should only have 3 funnels.
@Geoffrey Mowbray. Imperial War Ensign, rather than white ensign.
@@imjashingyou3461 Yes: although she did erect a dummy funnel as a ruse to appear as a British cruiser.
Nah she is just pretending to be a Kriegsmarine ship
Jingles, great video about a historically significant WWI vessel.

thankyou for this video Jingles. me being an Australian, i'd never heard of this battle between the Emden and Sydney (shocking i know). so again thankyou for a bit more of the history of the brave men and women who served in WW1.
I love the little history lessons you include in your reviews. Excellent vid as always.
One of these days I actually need to give WoWs a try...
MJ, wish I had you as my history teacher. Great vid. Enjoy these immensely. Thanks.
Nice bit of history, like you I was appalled checking the stats when I first got the ship. But I also have found I enjoy playing it. Sometimes I feel bad for the other players as I am seal clubbing lol
Emden's a good, little flame thrower and maneuvers nice, too. Also - if you take enough damage your fake stack can be shot away.
Great stories I enjoy listening to these war stories. It reminds me of the stories my grandfather would tell me about WW2.
He....re-provisioned and repainted the ship at Diego Garcia......more like balls of titanium.
An awesome little ship with an amazing history. Honour has nothing to do with the side on which you fight.

Frigate Emden V of Bundesmarine, left service in 2013, still wore the Iron Cross. I visited her in 2000 at the port of Barcelone, a proud crew.
Ah, I love these videos that have a good amount of history in them as well. Great job Jingles. Really loved this video!
That was an absolutely fascinating insight into the back story of the SMS Emden and her captain, thanks for that Admiral J
I really do enjoy your snippets of history and you should do more of them, maybe link your favourite war novels you read?
Great video Jingles. This really reminds me of the first Jingles WoWS videos I watched which got me interested in the game. What a man Von Muller was!
I absolutely love my emden, such a rich history and it's a rare ship and I got it for free!
Oh Jingles, you are truly the bright spot of my day. Please don't ever change.

A particularly well done video. Much appreciated.
I actually LIVE in EMDEN omg xD
I live in Emden too :D
OMG your city was named after the famous ship!
Das musste sein...
Sirion .. really xDD haha läuft diggah
+Krischaan D.
And I live in Sydney.
;p
+Sirion But Emden was named after the city?
Again, thx for the history lesson Jingles. Great stuff.
You'll never see such chivalry in war these days...
+Dominic Peakman there were people like that...
There is an island that both the Canadians and Danish think they own, how they fight over it is the Canadians take down the Danish flag and leave some Canadian whiskey and put their flag up an the Danish will come around and take down the Canadian flag and leave some schnapps for the Canadians
+Dominic Peakman Except the story in this video refers to such chivalry...?
Did you even hear the first half?
You won’t see polite war when you don’t even see the enemy. Nowadays you just hit them with an airstrike or missile. None of that “sparing” or “chivalry” nonsense.
im listening it during work. Always love the history part.
GREAT.. GREAT story thank you very much for sharing this tail
Wonderful video, my hat's off to you, Jingles. Keep up the good job
Love the history lessons, please continue them
This tale is MASSIVE
Gosh she's a beauty! I love these old turn of the century ships. Especially when they are painted white!
Jingles would make an excellent history teacher!!
was bored without jingles' videos
The captain was a true gentlemen and his crew were honorable.
Wouldn't get anything like that now.
Not a lot, but you get the occasional nice fellow
Kitsune legend Don't be stupid being creative takes intelligence.:P
wottanksplayer When was the last time ship vs ship combat has happened? Last time I can think was over 30 years ago.
SMS Emden: the light cruiser that single-handedly humiliated the most powerful Navy in the world.
I WANT MY Emden BACK!
another storytime with Admiral Jingles! thank you!
Got it, love it! I like to call these low tier ships "bumpercars" because it describes the way you play them.
Great video! I was completely unfamiliar with real history of the Emden. I will admit, like you, the stats kind of turned me off to it. Since I won the ship playing missions I decided to give it a shot. It's a fantastic little boat and I enjoy sailing it.
There's a turret of the Emden and sydney in Canberra war memorial.
Great History lesson. Thanks Jingles
RAN for the win! Thanks for telling this story Jingles!!
Hollywood pay attention, THIS should be the subject of your next flick.
+BlitztheDragon theres already a pretty good german film about the Crew & Adventures of the emden :) /watch?v=PZ_qTt0h_fY
+BlitztheDragon There is a German movie about the Emden, but it's more about the voyage of the landing party. The actual ship gets very little screentime. It's still a nice movie.
Blindanddumb
Yea that story is amazing, too :D
Cool to see they have the fake funnel on the ship in game too. Crazy story behind it too
I really love the story of the Emden!
It's a fun little ship. I like taking it out to flatten ammo against hulls at high speed.
Wow, this is the earliest I've ever been to one of jingles videos :D.
Love these vids, thanks Jingles
At the war memorial in Canberra they have a turret from the German cruiser and one from the Sydney I'm pretty sure
Another war story for you to look up: Felix Graf von Luckner with his ship Seeteufel . It is an awsome story!
Wasn't he 'D87Newcastle' just a couple weeks ago?
He's gonna be cycling through all the ship names now...XD
+Malsy Pright I believe he's changing names every now and then so he doesn't have the whole enemy (and friendly) team on his rear chasing him down :D
Halbostfriese It'll be fun to guess which name will be next.
I always wondered why my emden's first stack didn't blow smoke. Thanks jingles!
Look closely and you can see the fake stack has a top plate on it.
Great info. Keep them coming.
TL;DR
Aurora is a more Skill-Based version of the St Louis, because her armor is nowhere near as good and she has something around 4500 fewer Hit Points.
