I was sixteen when I first read the Secret History - a pretentious kid living in a London boarding school who was too haughty to admit how lonely she was. I was the only one in the whole school taking Latin classes (this was early/mid 2010s and dead languages were already very much out of fashion) and I say Tartt's novel altered a fundamental part of my soul back then: it was more than an event, felt greater than any person I've ever liked or even met in my life. The appeal of the story, to me at least, was the flight from what my younger, pretentious self used to call 'the evil of banality' - I saw the modern world as an ugly, vapid thing and the descriptions of the students in the novel being nonchalant aliens to their own world, existing on a plane of alternative reality through their cold, magnificent minds drenched with that strange, distant breath of the ancients fascinated me. Just like you wanting to be like Rory (or other characters in the Gilmore Girls) I wanted to be one of them. So I've read Classics in university, been staying in the same postgrad school, and currently am procrastinating from preparing Phaedo/Meno supervisions for the first-years whom I need to teach tomorrow. Needless to say, I've been burnt-out and jaded by the academia after all those years. I came across your video by chance and you remind me of the time when I first read the novel, when I too was a wide-eyed fresher, eager for sense of belonging and intellectual excellence....I wish you the best of luck for your new chapter in college, and let me second someone else who suggested Franny and Zooey for you. Ppl usually praise 'Franny' part and don't have the patience for 'Zooey', but I do think Zooey is what keeps Franny grounded, what completes and elevates the whole work. It is a heartbreaking piece, in and of itself. Persevere till the end of Zooey, if you ever decide to read it :)
Thank you so much for this masterpiece of a comment; I am so glad that you stumbled across my video! I love seeing how much of an effect a book can have on a person, and it looks like The Secret History affected you to an incredible extent, even if it was reinforcing ideas you'd already started to have. It is so cool that the course of your life was so determined by this book, and judging from how academic and well-written your comment is, you've definitely kept up with that trajectory! Franny and Zooey is absolutely on my TBR now, and I am absolutely making a video on it, and 'll make sure I stick around for both parts, too. Thanks again for taking the time to write such an eloquent comment for my silly little TH-cam video; this is definitely going in my comments hall of fame. Good luck in postgrad!
I was actually going to pick this up next for a Fall read! I really appreciate how he summarized the book in contrast to what he (and I) originally thought the book was going to be like. The video was so calming, too!
@@hannaisab Thank you so much!! This is like the number one comment ever lol. The book was definitely not what I expected, but I’d say it’s still worth the time (even if you want to wait until the winter/spring to read it)!
The is the worst feeling is when you really like a youtuber then realize their subscriber no. doesn’t have a K beside it. He rlly deserves more hype lol.
I watched this video and thought you were a famous TH-camr until I checked the views!!! This is so high quality, and the shot at the end is so cinematic. I must admit I was slightly heartbroken by the three star rating since this book is one of my favorites, but opinions vary :)
Thank you so much!!!! Nicest comment ever. I do think I broke quite a few hearts with my review lol but I can totally understand why people love this book so much.
@@atticusfina Ofc!! And yes, I can also understand what you were saying because parts of it definitely do sort of drag on (especially the part where Richard is literally just freezing to death lol)
The secret history is one of my favorite books and i have to say that your video about it is the best i have ever seen. I love the way you structured everything, your thoughts and just the entire video!!
Hey I really liked the video. But I wanted to know further about the story...I hope you incorporate more about the plot in the vids. It was fun though💛
@@atticusfina that can certainly be a tricky thing. If you're still looking for pretentious books to read, consider reading The Name of The Rose by Umberto Eco.
i love this! and youre cute oml. everything you referenced i have read and watched including the secret history itself! to note what you said about how you were disappointed the book didn't make you feel more "prestigious" i had felt the same way- though the book provided great passages of description, I had difficulty imagining some of the overall vibes of some scenes. honestly, pinterest helped with visuals and idk if guys use pinterest but i do recommend it lol. good luck with the rest of your channel, i have a feeling its gonna take off soon :)
i think you'll really like franny and zooey by jd salinger. i highly recommend it for extremely pretentious, gifted kid burnout vibes. one of my fav books of all time, much better than the catcher in the rye imo
I really liked Catcher in the Rye when I read it, so I can only imagine how good that one is! Maybe I can find my true pretentious self there. Adding to tbr 😎
heavy on the bad love interests of rory💀
dean will never be forgiven
The Richard mention was crazyyy, tell your friend watch out if he gets an invite to go hiking..
So true, and the craziest thing that wasn’t in the video is that he also had a friend named Henry 😳
this is my favorite book. i'm sad about the 3 starts but i can forgive you when you look this good and adorable
I am thinking of becoming a booktuber, fr.
We can start our journey together 🥲
@atticusfina Yes, of course.
I hope to make my start by November. Couldn't have picked a more complex book; Don Quixote.
Race you to finish line!
