Funny thing about malaysians is most of us are capable of speaking the right + proper english to engage in a conversation but still choose to use "english rojak" when speaking to each other.
It's because society deemed us to be "acah2" or "showoff" if we speak with proper english.
Very true. My father is Canadian and has been living here isn't early 90's. I speak fluent English but speaks "English rojak" with other Malays 😅 I don't know why.. just second nature I guess

In many places, despite learning the same language, the accents of the spoken language may still be different. But Malaysians have this weird talent where they can instantly pick up the same accent as the person they are talking with and most of the time the locals won’t even notice! I personally feel proud of this talent myself, but I remember reading a comment somewhere saying that they hate Malaysians because they think we are just showing off/imitating and it’s annoying. I was very upset when reading this because that’s not the reason why we switch accents. It’s just a natural instinct to us and most of the time we don’t even notice our accents have changed!
But on the bright side, I saw some replies on the comment defending us saying that they felt very welcome and at ease instead when we Malaysians do that, especially to those who are far away from home and have to face unfamiliar surroundings and deal with problems alone. The accents made them feel like they were still at home and it calms them down a lot.

As a Malay I continuously change my accent depending on who I'm talking to. Manglish around Chinese friends, Rojak English with family and Malay friends, and an international accent for class presentations 😂

Weird Chinese pronunciations help with some accent and the way of reading melayu suku kata makes some language and accent easier

Haha we Malaysian are generally adaptable and open culturally. We adapt to the people we talk to and we assimilate well. There was a time when I was a teenage when I had a close American friend. After talking with him too much a few weeks, I couldn't turn off the American accent.... And I didn't even leave the country...all our conversations happened in Malaysia
I actually noticed that malays learned the accent quickly. Like I have a friend who's a malay and then we studied korean language together and she already adapt the korean accent while I'm still struggling lmao 🤣

Filipinos and Malaysians are very much alike. We easily adapt. In the office then, we got a lot of international calls as a shipping company. Hey, was that a Briton or Japanese or Singaporean you're talking to? How did you know? Subconsciously, we were not even aware we're adapting the accent of the person we're talking to.

I'm not Malaysian but whenever I watch a historical movie or any kind of movie I enjoy, I somehow accidentally copy the accent for a short moment. It's quite funny.
Same goes for me. And, also when I wake up on some mornings I suddenly realize that my English accent is sometimes a bit different, say sometimes American, or German, Italian or even something like Australian....but it slowly wears off before noon until I'm back to my original, natural English accent.

@@2peter1v2 Its just a word malaysians/singaporeans tend to add at the end of any conversation. It depends on how you use it though. For example, let's go eat. We'll say things like jom pergi makan lah. You can use it for other things as well like penat lah (I'm tired).

There's something about the Malay people's tongue where we ourselves don't have that strong of an accent while speaking in our language so we are somehow able to pickup a foreign accent easily. Like A Malay can speak Mandarin like a chinese or at least ,with clear comprehensible sound, and speak Korean almost like a Korean without having to try that hard. And English. Oh, that one's easier. I mean, we can even fake an accent.

I have this one guy who been to China, Taiwan, Australia and UK and he’s now at Singapore.
Always find it fascinating when he comes to explaining accents across the world, he could switch his character to fit right in the local people and non of them would know that he’s actually a foreigner.

Been in England for 3 years. Went back to Malaysia for gap year. My first few months was like the accent kept on coming when I speak with my friends. And a year later, my English went back to the normal Manglish butttttt when I got nervous, lets say, when I’m trying to speak in front of a big audience. The accent came out again😑
This is actually quite common. Even in my mother tongue, sometimes I tend to change accents. My mom told me that when I was young, while watching an Argentinian show, I started to pick up the accent 🤣🤣
As a malaysian, this is extremely true as I only took 2 years to learn to speak Chinese in a way people understand.
My daughter adapt chinese language very quickly when she changed from kindergarten with mix races (chinese indian malay) to majority chinese kids in the other kindergarten. I think she took only about 1 month plus to 2 month to be fluently speaking the language and it really amazed me. But she still weak in reading, still learning.

Yes right. I joined a chinese server based mainly Malaysia, Singapore & Indonesia. Less than two weeks and I already got the singlish accent. My mandarin also improve a lot since the last time I speak it was in middle school (5 years ago) 😂

The “lah” part is so true. My grandparents live in Malaysia so when I hear my mom say “lah” at the end of a sentence it’s only when we’re in Malaysia. It’s like an on and off switch. If she hears someone say it the switch just turns on ig.
