An Oxbridge college still regularly wins despite this and so would likely be unbeatable if they could field a team of the four best from the whole uni.) The questions are exceedingly hard and the contestants are some of the brightest people at each university. Jeremy Paxman hosts and he was a UK journalist widely known as being very tough on the people he interviewed, particularly UK politicians. He now basically just hosts this. Hope this helps :)
Additional: all answers for the questions where the team can confer have to be delivered by the team captain (2nd from the right), which is why the man answered for the woman.

University Challenge is notoriously difficult, and Jeremy Paxman is just one of those Oxbridge people who know everything, so it’s not surprising to see him irritated :) As someone who’s a fan of the show, to me the clips that TwoSet has shown are actually easier than the average classical music question they ask.
Also, these are below average contestnats. Not to mention that many of the contestants perform just as well/better on equally obscure questions in every other subject >
It's kind of like if for modern music they showed them an original and a cover and they guessed that the Beatles covered a song by the Backstreet Boys or something. It doesn't make any sense in terms of timeline.
A.H Just search for WAP on TH-cam. I think it stands for Webern and Puccini. Someone else claimed otherwise. My hunch is that figuring out which of us is right will answer all of your questions. 😼
Note: The guy answered instead of the woman who clearly knew because he was team captain - sometimes the captain nominates another member of their team to say the answer, but in this case I guess it wasn't necessary Source: I'm English and my family watched a lot of University Challenge :) And yeah, Jeremy Paxman is suuuper condescending and mean
Paxman is hilariously condescending when it comes to subjects he knows about e.g. classical music, literature, politics, history etc.. but he is amazed that anyone can answer the easiest of questions when it’s about science subjects or maths because he knows next nothing about these things himself.
also this is especially ludicrous considering most competitors are mid twenties at most, how many 22 year olds (unless it's literally their field of study) will even know all these composers let alone recognise them
as a physics-math student, that's what I was wondering about. like, how can you get so condescending about knowing subjects that are specifically relevant to YOU... and I actually love classical music, I just don't have the time nor the reason to differentiate between different composters and pieces. and I commend those who do, any bit of knowledge is beautiful. but its the same as if I started asking him random questions about electricity and wave model and got snarky cause he doesn't know subjects that matter to me as a tudent who learns these things daily.. all of these contestants are students who are knowledgable in their own fields. sounds impressive to me
@@noone-gf5op Im not exactly sure of the level of knowledge these students are expected of so i may be wrong here, however based off my own observations of their knowledge on other fields I would expect someone on the teams here to recognize Beethoven's 6th. In my opinion, Paxman's reaction is completely warranted because he's seen the contestants answer much harder questions on classical music correctly. It was so shocking to me that Britten's music was recognized but not the opening melody of Beethoven's 6th.
Come on... You'd expect the four quickest students of a university to at least recognize Beethoven's 6th. Such an easy question and both teams messed it up.
@@lavamatstudios Yeah if it was only on the most well known of the pieces they showed sure and I do understand that for the backgrounds the contestants are supposed to have it's a little pathetic that they're having trouble with the questions but I doubt he himself would actually be able to answer any of those questions without the answers in front of him, hence why I think him being condescending doesn't make sense.

@@iodeleon1440 not really opera is usually regarded separately. It's like calling musicals modern music. They share a lot of similarities but the bulk of opera time wise is not played by the classical canon orchestras. Just some overtures
@@charlietian9843 I disagree. Operas (especially orchestral accompaniments) were written in classical styles like all other classical music. Plus the classical composers composed the operas. Yes, they’re a different branch, but they’re still classical music. Are you saying William Tell Overture and Ride of the Valkyries aren’t classical pieces? Because they are from operas.
9:52 That guy answers because he is the team captain. The person, who is second from the right, is always the team captain. The classical music round is just a tiny section of the entire show. Basically, the premise of this show is that 4 students are selected from many British universities and they are all extremely intelligent and are generally strong in most areas of study, from maths, linguistics, history, chemistry, to architecture, physics, art and music. The universities all compete against each other to see who has the cleverest students each year. The winning university wins nothing but a trophy and bragging rights over the losing universities.
The reason why the answers all pass through the captain is because it's an open question and you don't want two or three people shouting their answers on top of each other. Nothing difficult about it.
In bonuses, the captain has the option to nominate their teammate to answer instead. In this case, if Pugh Ginn wanted Warwicker to answer, he could say "Nominate Warwicker" and then Warwicker can legally answer. Nomination is usually done when the team member insists it's an answer that's hard to pronounce like a technical term or a non-English name and the captain does not want to risk a mispronunciation. However, good captains will usually nominate teammates if they are the primary source of the answer in order to give them credit and improve team morale. Captains who are good team managers will usually nominate Warwicker in that situation
@@hugnboba afaik BBC cant give cash prizes by laws there, but the rest can. Also this is produced by ITV Studios (or Granada, Gasciogne's era) so i guess the cash is there but just dont say it. Unless someone can confirm

Man I would like to encourage two set to explore the world of opera, I play the piano myself and before quarantine I wasn’t really into opera, but man when u get into it, it takes u to a whole other world of emotions, its the most powerful form of music in my opinion and it shouldn’t be neglected
Tony Ping something that people don’t really get is that the voice is actually an instrument itself, I encourage u to listen to bel canto (Bellini, Donizetti, Rossini) and verdi operas that are preferably performed by maria callas, every phrase has a meaning and emotion in it, but if u want to get into it, u have to know the plot because then it doesn’t make sense, I suggest that u start by watching rather than just listening but then slowly get into just listening to the beautiful and powerful music that comes with the premier voice of Callas, I mean it also depends what genre u are into, there are baroque operas that are pretty powerful, there’s the mozart operas which are sublime, the bel canto and verdi which are the best, wagner which is absolute drama and heavy, and finally the verismo (puccini, leoncavallo, mascagni) which have the most powerful and emotional impacts, the operas I recommend are Tosca, La Traviata, Norma, Il Trovatore, Cosi Fan Tutte, Don Giovanni, Il Barbiere, Madama Butterfly, and Lohengrin
I actually danced to rite of spring (I'm sure it was spelled like that). The dance theme was literally a sacrifice and we all "fell" at the end. It was quite interesting, it was a performance for CDI. (California dance institute, thank you for reading!)
Music is all about sharing the love to others, let’s spread classical music to the world!! I’m a bit glad they know a lot though. Love you TwoSet!! I hope to meet you in person...
I can see one reason someone might confuse the Rite of Spring with Beethoven 6. Their knowledge of classical music comes from having watched Disney Fantasia when they were 10, but now it's 10 years on and they can't remember which piece is which.

Sometimes its a challenge to even understand the questions let alone the answers
@@grant4468 Wouldn't put it past them for that to be a question
No the reason he's irritated is, he's a dick.

me: YEAH LMAO WHY WOULD THEY GUESS THAT, SO STUPID.....
Me too. I know music, but only just learning, and I laughed at them, when I didn't know any more than them.
It's kind of like if for modern music they showed them an original and a cover and they guessed that the Beatles covered a song by the Backstreet Boys or something. It doesn't make any sense in terms of timeline.
The only one I got that TwoSet missed was Offenbach. Those questions were brutal.
I got that one also. I remember his surname because of a joke by Victor Borge.
I only got Stravinsky, but I must say I just guessed
I got Wagner also

And yeah, Jeremy Paxman is suuuper condescending and mean
By all accounts Paxman is perfectly pleasant off camera.

2018: saCriLegOus
2020: lAmEntAblE
Perfect word for 2020: LaMeNTaBle!
You spelled 'sacrilegious' wrong, mate. That was lamentable
Paxman is hilariously condescending when it comes to subjects he knows about e.g. classical music, literature, politics, history etc.. but he is amazed that anyone can answer the easiest of questions when it’s about science subjects or maths because he knows next nothing about these things himself.
based
also this is especially ludicrous considering most competitors are mid twenties at most, how many 22 year olds (unless it's literally their field of study) will even know all these composers let alone recognise them
as a physics-math student, that's what I was wondering about. like, how can you get so condescending about knowing subjects that are specifically relevant to YOU... and I actually love classical music, I just don't have the time nor the reason to differentiate between different composters and pieces. and I commend those who do, any bit of knowledge is beautiful. but its the same as if I started asking him random questions about electricity and wave model and got snarky cause he doesn't know subjects that matter to me as a tudent who learns these things daily.. all of these contestants are students who are knowledgable in their own fields. sounds impressive to me
@@noone-gf5op Im not exactly sure of the level of knowledge these students are expected of so i may be wrong here, however based off my own observations of their knowledge on other fields I would expect someone on the teams here to recognize Beethoven's 6th. In my opinion, Paxman's reaction is completely warranted because he's seen the contestants answer much harder questions on classical music correctly. It was so shocking to me that Britten's music was recognized but not the opening melody of Beethoven's 6th.
I wonder if he'd be so condescending without the answer cards in front of him...
To be fair, Paxman was condescending on questions which you'd expect the average UC contestant to know e.g. Beethoven 6.
He's always like this, unfortunately
@@ViceroyoftheDiptera but then the person answers by name without skipping a beat an obscure ass piece’s name and he takes it for granted, its kinda lamentable

Wozzeck is seriously one of the most F'd operas. His mom didn't drown, but was killed by her husband, and HE later drowned in the pond. That ending where he's obliviously playing when his mums body was found was just... *shivers*
@Gracie Wtf are you talking about? We definitely should, you didn't even give any argument for it
@Gracie Why the hell not?
I'm no musican, just a casual classical music fan and I feel soooo damn good, knowing who composed Can Can whereas Twoset didn't know 😂 Anyway, the quiz is high quality, I'd love to see it in Poland (but would be afraid of the outcome 😅).
I was so confused, because the presenter said bavarian born. In my mind, Offenbach is just French.
It's funny that TwoSet didn't have a clue about the easiest opera (or operetta) questions, like Don Giovanni or Offenbach's Orphée.
You should change the title to, “does twoset know opera?”
exactly, this was really an opera quiz, not a "classical" quiz
james friel opera is classical music ...
the answer is clear; they don't lol
"The winning university wins nothing but a trophy and bragging rights..."
I just...LMAO
"The winning university wins nothing but a trophy and bragging rights..."
as someone who used to compete in regional programming competitions, this hurt but yeah, only bragging rights all those efforts and you only bring home the medal. the trophy goes to the school.

I laughed so much at the "eine kleine". Im german and I didn't knew this is how people call it. Guess it makes sense though, Nachtmusik really is a difficult word.
Nooooo.
English-speakers often abbreviate the title.
Also, it's easy to say "Nacktmusik" instead, which would mean something slightly different.
It's just weird to hear that you choose "eine kleine" though, which means "a small ..." instead of the noun.

Man I would like to encourage two set to explore the world of opera, I play the piano myself and before quarantine I wasn’t really into opera, but man when u get into it, it takes u to a whole other world of emotions, its the most powerful form of music in my opinion and it shouldn’t be neglected
Oh really??? How so ???
It was the same for me I started interesting in opera during quarantine .

Love this crossover. Grew up watching University Challenge and it's always a good week when you get things right that the contestants don't. :)
I can see one reason someone might confuse the Rite of Spring with Beethoven 6. Their knowledge of classical music comes from having watched Disney Fantasia when they were 10, but now it's 10 years on and they can't remember which piece is which.
Interesting conjecture, that. It's possible, though the Rite is pretty damn far soundwise from the Pastoral!
