RAC offer mobile mechanics as well. Did my alternator, belts and a wheel for £405 and took less than an hour. Had to wait a day for them to order the part but an excellent service and was cheaper than the quote I got from my local garage.
You can get reconditioned alternators for about £120 to £160 depending on the type. They're easy enough to fit yourself, mate. Some car spares places offer a trade-in of your old alternator with a surcharge.
Your split charge relay has a little red led that lights up when the relay is open and the current is flowing. If the starter voltage gets up to the number on the relay it will open the switch and charge the leisure batteries (it doesn't make any difference if you have one, two or three batteries as long as they are connected in parallel) as a bonus if you have solar charging your leisure batteries and they become full, the relay will open and trickle charge your starter battery. It's definitely worth upgrading your alternator the wiring will take another 30 to 40 amps as the manufacturers always over-spec the wires for safety. I do this on every vehicle I own. Ask your friend to check the condition of the belt that drives the alternator they do wear out and they usually drive the water pump and steering, so you don't want one snapping on you. You would know if this happens as your battery light would come on and your steering would go heavy. Have a Kraken Christmas
Magic, some o best time's in life happen when we breakdown. We learn at the them times so much. Never had any breakdown recovery. Love n hugs The dafthermits.
If your connecting your two batteries in series that will create a 24 volt output from them. You should connect them in parallel and this will keep them at 12v output. 👌👍
I'd recommend you to get the highest amperage one for your van, especially if you intend to fit the bluetti charger 1, as you will need the extra amps to cover charging your power banks. Good luck, & have a good Christmas.
Buy the biggest alternator as the standard one is only designed to charge the van only, you have leisure batteries now so the bigger the better it will charge your home much quicker mate 👍🏻🇬🇧
I'm a marine electrician. The brushes are stuck on the alternator. Giving it a bash frees them up. They might possibly stick again mate. Best to get it rebuilt. Its cheaper than replacing it . If you upgrade it then you need to upgrade the wiring too otherwise you will overload the wiring and set your van on fire.
When I go after parts I use a variety of methods, vehicle make/model/year/version type, part numbers, manufacturer part numbers and cross reference numbers (as the same part may be made by more than one company), workshop manuals/repairs guides, online research, visually examining the part to ensure match etc, always good to have a spare of as many things as possible.
@ Hi Mark, the 180amps is peak, so when at idle it will be a lot less. This is why some have larger alternators because of the high draw at lower RPM’s. Might be worth having a chat with an Automotive Electrician and see if they can source an uprated one. They may even have a twin alternator kit? Remember to update the wiring as well, both positive and earths. The idea is to keep resistances as low as you can. Mains charging may be helpful in winter if you are not driving enough. You can get 240volts out of type 2 EV chargers. Take care M.

Just one suggestion. Be sure there's a way to turn ioff the alternator charging. Even though I've the proper DC-DC charger, i made sure I've got a witch to isolate the alternator charging to protect the alternator.
Your battery is probably under the floor in front of the passenger seats. Them booster packs generally only work when u connect them to the battery not the points under the bonnet..
21ft of van , all that roof space , fill it up with solar panels to charge your leisure batteries look at eco worthy they do lithium batteries too, good deals at the mo 😊
400 pound for a alternator , what is it gold plated 😮 you will get one much cheaper than that . Try gsf or euro car parts .. Auto electrical motor factors etc
Mark, I mention to you before, never connect your leisure batteries to you alternator. They have no current limiting built in. The DC to DC chargers do. Get a bigger alternator if possible. Mine is a 250 amp type.
Hi Mark. Don't be using any of your electrical appliances until you get the new alternator on, if you just use your battery for lighting and heating you might get through till the alternator is fitted. All the best.
My guess is your alternator has gone because of the split start relay not regulating the current being drawn into the leisure batteries. I think you should be getting a dc to dc charger if your alternator has gone otherwise it will just do it again. That’s my guess mate.
He is 100% right Mark. Even if it hasn’t caused it, a dc to dc charger will prevent this. You can get a decent one for £130-£175. My suggestion would be a 15 amp one as this won’t put too much pressure on the alternator. It will take longer to charge the leisure batteries than a 30a one but once again, keeping the pressure on the alternator at a minimum has to be the priority for someone so reliant on their vehicle. That’s my 2 bobs worth me ole mucker 👍
You have to get a new alternator asap...euro parts will ensure the correct one is ordered too... they also have a ' book the fit 'service , listing various garages in your area...trouble is time of the year ... 🤞it gets sorted asap
I told you to get some skyhooks. Now you just have a long wait. The RAC have skyhooks, they will hook you up. I'm in the AA but they only meet on a Thursday.
Hi Mark just a little heads up. I am not sure if you connected those leisure batteries correctly. If you are running a 12 volt system then you need to connect them in parallel positive to positive and negative to negative and then draw ang charge off the positive and negative. if you are running a 24 volt system then you connect them in series the positive on 1 battery to the negative on the other battery (usually with a short heavier gauged cable if the batteries are close together) then your draw and charge are connecter to the two unused terminals. I hope that makes sense and helps. My guess is that your van is a 12 volt system. God Bless have a very Merry Christmas
Been waiting all day for this Mark you have not disappointed the positivity out of a negative is everything you're about, excuse the pun, see you soon buddy. ♥
It'll definitely be just the brushes worn down and giving it a whack has freed them off a bit in the brush guides, try not to overload it until you get sorted snd should be ok for a short time, could also spray some wd in the right place as well just to help things a bit.

Hi Mark, I've been watching your last few videos, I see you have had your leisure batteries go flat. It's the usual problem of using more power than you are getting from your alternator, especially in winter time and using power when you are stopped without the engine running, you will always be chasing power so to speak. I was going to say upgrading your alternator would improve things, I am doing this to my VW T6, the standard alternators are 140 or 180amps, there is also a 250amp alternator for the crafter but the one I am looking at is for a smart alternator, I'm not sure which type your van is so you would need to look into this. Also I am not sure how your batteries will be from now onwards, they will have deteriorated after running them completely flat, it is not good for batteries. Hope you get it sorted out and running properly again.
@@MadMarkvanlife That's it, you can easily get a 180amp from anywhere, they do make a 250amp, Bosch for example but it depends on the exact model of van. also depends how much you want to spend on an alternator as it's a lot more expensive.
