I think it's time that is holding readers back from reading works like these. We feel the need to read as many books as possible in the time we have on this earth. I'm glad that I started realizing that reading books well and rereading favourites is more rewarding than reading 100 books a year and not remember half of what I read. This was a wonderful video. Well, this was kind of meta. My father passed and I cleaned out his library and took most of the books and have this set. I was thinking about reading it recently. I remembered the time he told me about his favorite part where Proust is stuck in a waiting room for hours and is watching the shadows change on the floor. He said it was such a little scene, but was written so magically. I guess Proust succeeded in what he was doing.
I’d like to make a book suggestion of my own: “The Book of Disquiet” by Fernando Pessoa. It’s the strangest book I’ve ever read and at the same time the most beautiful and brilliant, written by an even stranger person. A book that has absolutely no structure. You can open it to any page and just start reading.
I was actively searching for reviews on Proust’s great novel when I came across yours. There are numerous reviews on TH-cam including television productions but none of them come close to the quality of your video. You presented the case of why we should read this novel in a really convincing way and I shall. I started reading Swanns Way on ebooks but I think I will get a physical copy of the entire novel-a hardcover. Thank you.
Glad I found your channel! I've nearly finished reading Samuel Richardson's Clarissa, one of the longest English novels, and one of the first. It's staggering to think one person wrote something so rich, and explores so many characters at such profound depths. I read his earlier novel, Pamela, earlier in the year, which has fine writing but doesn't reach the heights of Clarissa. I plan on reading the entirety of In Search of Lost Time soon. Like you I read Swann's Way many years ago, but didn't commit to the entire novel. Anyway, enjoyed the video!

The first line of Swann's Way unexpectedly brought me to tears despite having never heard of Proust or In Search of Lost Time. Recollection is such a universal feeling...I have fallen in love with Proust's prose because of this video. ❤

Beautiful video. For me too Proust is an author that I am peripherally aware of but the conversation around his work always made him seem kind of hard to read and unappealing because of it. You've convinced me to give the book a go though. Also that big illustrated edition is absolutely gorgeous, looks a bit unwieldy but really pretty nonetheless.

Sadly, Heritage press did not make an illustrated edition for the following volumes, and Swann's Way is the only one we have with Lamotte's beautiful illustrations. Perhaps that is alright, though. My mantle piece probably couldn't hold all 7 volumes that size!

Interesting copies you have, I prefer the Lydia Davis translation, but those are surely the coolest looking. *whoa, and illustrations???? Cool I have his collection, second hand, book 1 is mangled, book 2 is 95% intact, 34567 are 1000% perfect condition😂
Very good introduction! However, it is NOT an autobiography - it is very important not to confuse the Narrator with the author. Proust templates his novel on a variety of people, incidents and places but it is a work of fiction, albeit philosophical fiction.
"Proust was an incredibly prolific and beautiful writer who inspired the likes of James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, and Fyodor Dostoyevsky." Except that Dostoyevsky died 15 years before the publication of Proust's first book.
At last a useful TH-cam video - focused, specific, clear, measured, prepared & thought through - not just some deluded stay-at-home unboxing vinyl or proffering ersatz 'knowledge' of crap music, their favourite records .... cheers!
