Paul, just FYI, we've found a hiccup in the plan when we pre-scanned. There are so many boats moored in the harbor that they block the lighthouse! If you actually want to join us, we'll instead be trying to shoot the William E. Dever Water Crib. from the lake shore north of Ohio Street Beach, right about where E Superior Street meets Lake Shore Drive.
Hey Ian, great explanation of your plan! Are you going to use any filters on the lens? I'm guessing the relatively low angle of the sun at that time likely won't damage the camera sensor though, but just wondering.
Good question. You're right. Because of the low-angle of the sun in Chicago, I won't be using any filters. If I were somewhere in the world where the eclipse would be higher in the sky, a solar filter like this: bhpho.to/3fzikOu would be necessary!
I always enjoy the insight. Thank you. I very much appreciate the comment about using a solar filter, or in this case not needing one. There doesn’t seem to be too much info out there if you are trying to shoot a foreground subject with the sun low in the sky.
Hi nice video!!! Just For Info: the “Size Of Sun/Moon” indication has nothing to do with the FoV option. On Planer, tap the layer icon. Tap the Arrow icon (right side on screen) at Sun or Moon. Here you find the toggle switch for “Show Sun/Moon size”
Durul, Because the eclipse is only visible in Chicago right after sunrise, I'll not be using any filters... the low angle of the sun dims it dramatically at sunrise/sunset so it's "safe" to shoot it without a filter. If I were in a place where the sun was higher in the sky, I would use a solar filter like this: bhpho.to/3fzikOu
Waiting for watch next ep.
It's up!
All the very best!! Hope you’ll be able to make another video during the actual eclipse 👍🏼
Awesome shot Ian!
GREAT to see you back.. this was AWESOME.. I am going to give it a go...thank you!!
Good luck and looking forward seeing the result :-)
Ian, I want to thank YOU for this video.. I was able to capture the partial eclipse because of the awesome information you gave …THANK YOU again!!!
This is so weird. I was just watching an older video 2 days ago thinking "I sure wish Ian would start uploading again" Glad to have you back!
Awesome planning Ian, hopefully you'll get bright skies where needed. grtz to Diana \o/ looking forward to the Epic shots
Thanks Rob! We're hoping for clear skies!
Great video. PhotoPills is an amazing app, but as I dont use it often, I get very confused. Keep up doing videos like this.
Great planning and good luck!

Thanks Paul! We wouldn't mind some company.

Great tutorial Ian! Thanks for posting. Too bad I'm 2000 miles away.

That is a very good point that I missed! Thanks Peter. I have the Sun and Moon size on by default so I forgot about this detail.
Nice planning. Good luck with the weather! May your sky be blue....nah, other channel
As others have said- thank you and nice job.
Thanks Pat!
Amazing Plan...
Brilliant, cheers
What kind of filter will you use for solar eclipse ?
