I'm very conservative, and I love helldivers. I don't feel attacked at all - the parody doesn't make fun of soldiers so much as it makes fun of surveillance states, political lies, and a government that cares very little for its soldiers. The soldiers themselves are so cool and heroic that people love playing as them!
It's a satire/parody on the american political climate, particularly about the War on Terror. Some might call it "neo-liberalism" but that doesn't really have any coherent definition. I think conservatives can understand how much of a shitshow and nonsense it was. HD2 is just a very exaggerated comical take on it.
I honestly feel like the satire is just meant to be a bit of comedy and flavor on top of the rest of the game, which is a more serious combat shooter. Like the over-the-top patriotism is something you’re supposed to see through as a tactic to bring in recruits and keep them motivated, but you’re also supposed to take the war seriously, as if you lose, Super Earth will be overrun and humans won’t survive. 🤷🏻♂️
It makes fun of the military industrial complex and the idea of “making the world safe for democracy” (which absolutely deserves to be made fun of) not individual soldiers.
True. Also modern western liberals are very pro war. Most of my friends (i'm liberal) support funding ukraine and forced conscription of their dwindling population. 30 years ago liberals did not support the draft by large.
As a former serviceman, (Uncle Sam's Misguided Children, or Marines for the less stupid), I never feel like the developers are laughing AT me, but WITH me. There's a lot of truth to the notion that the higher ups are screwing you and underinforming you and your brothers, the guys stuck in the mud with you are what matters. I have heard and used the phrase "I hate the Marine Corps, but I love Marines" often because it's true
The most fun thing about playing Helldivers 2 is fighting *with* the guys next to you. Sure, we're fighting for the cause and the flag and all that jazz, but blowing shit up with friends and surviving wild battles by the skin of your teeth is where the rubber meets the road. Whether we're fighting the bugs or the bots, our only goal is to complete the mission, destroy the enemy, and get everyone on that extraction bird alive.
Haven't seen this Walsh play videogames, but Klavan really struggles. I get the point of 'trying to be hip,' but the only trash gamer I'll ever give attention to is Asmon. He's
Klavin is going to help me bring Virtual Reality to Greater America and seniors as new gaming therapy and to save them money from overpriced, unclean, and dangerous Biden reality. Gaming is no longer for NERD Klavin and I are making video games cool again 2024!
Klavan didn't do that bad considering that's how everyone starts playing shooters. You just got to keep playing to get good. Hats off to the editor, too.
Yeah, everyone falls every now and again... and again... and again... That's the point of the game: To keep going, stand strong, and bring home the win with your teammates, no matter the hardships.
Honestly if this is klavan's first fps this gameplay makes soooo much more sense, he panics and doesn't take time to aim. As you said he just needs practice and I sign up to help teach him !
I have so many games and now VR i looked over this but i'll take gaming news from Klavin. The writing on this game and gunplay look stellar. The bullet damage is crack
Klavan needs to talk to Carl Benjamin about the Starship Troopers movie. It's definitely not terrible, and the director utterly failed at making an anti-military movie.
@9606 Nah. Play Halo instead --as if everyone who gives a rat's ass about this game hasn't already played through the original trilogy at least once.--
Makes me think of Shirley Curry, a sweet lady who streams herself playing Skyrim. Quite a niche, I think a lot of people appreciate seeing people you wouldn't normally see interacting with games do so. It's always fun to see how their takes on different things in games vary.
There's something so interesting about watching someone who doesn't play video, play video games. The best way I could describe it, is like watching someone interact with a group of Indigenous people who are cut off from the world still in the hunter gather stage. Fascinating I love it
Dear Klavin, first let me say that I am older than you. Been gaming for 25 years. I went through the same experience with this game. Once you "Git Gud" the game played with friends becomes a very fun experience. Dont feel alone and give it another shot. Public games are a little less fun because there are some gaming Trolls but over all a very popular experience this game.
Thanks for giving us this. It's always fun and interesting to see a generation that didn't grow up with video games play them. Watching the expressions, and the inner emotions coming out as you struggle with the fundamentals of controls and what you are experiencing is a treat that takes me back to my youth. Also, with practice you can not only enjoy this hobby but actually be good at it. There's a Veteran grandpa older than you on TH-cam playing WarThunder and Battlefield... and he makes some pretty amazing plays. His hands are numb, and still pulls off long range sniper shots and strafing runs with planes.
Very few games I can recommend in the last several years. This is one worth the recommendation. Having a good squad makes the game more enjoyable. What platform do you play on?
I've been playing Helldivers 2 A ton. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT. This entire game is satire. its a joke. I've been gaming for YEARS and its extremely rare when people from xbox, playstation and PC are demanding to play with each other. its bringing people together in some pretty extraordinary ways and honestly even though its weird its really heartwarming. the other day I played with a brit an Aussie and a French guy and I, the American of the group felt welcomed and we all worked together to kill the enemies and we worked together as a team i felt like i was apart of this Super United Earth from the game and it was truly a humbling experience.
The great part about starship troopers, and Helldivers, is that the parody is so effective that it wraps back around to being 100% serious. The game (and movie) dont make fun of the military, they actually end up making them look fun and effective.
Tbh Starship Troopers is one of my favorite movies of all time, I’ve seen it countless times. It’s a cult classic and I love it. This game is amazing and I’ve been playing it for a week can’t wait to play it again

Starship Troopers is why I love this game even more. Love killing bugs with my team, hate the ones limiting our reach to make us look like traitors later on just because we left their scope for a little bit.
Helldivers 2 is amazing! Never before have I been online with a bunch of random people, all roleplaying and screaming about saving freedom and spreading democracy.

Fun fact, there was some roughly Klavans age in the Mobile Infantry in the Starship Troopers book. Rico’s dad. He surged the meteorite and out of both vengeance and inspiration by his son, he had a change of mind and enlisted into the military, specifically to Rico’s unit.
