Great video! I've heard something similar on a number of motorcycles, 4-strokes though. It's called spark "knock" but it's hardly a knocking sound. On my Harley it sounded like an engine rattle when under load that would come and go based on throttle position, which I thought nothing of, and ended up smoking the motor from the bad tune.
Which harley model and year ? I have a 2017 low rider s and noticed its dependent on throttle position and does it starting 4,000 rpm only twice though sounds like little rocks.

I heard this in my car too but it wasn;t a spark knock, It was the windshield wipers plastic cover that kept flapping or vibrating whenever I accelerate. That's when I knew that the whole plastic cover was loose, put some windscreen sealant in and couldn't hear it anymore.
Noticed it when I used a lower octane gas. I used 87, because the station I regularly used was out of 93. Could have been a transmission issue that was solved by new belt, weights, and rollers as scheduled mtc. Who knows?

My kymco scooter 2 stroke does the same thing sometimes. To me it's more like a grinding, rattling sound, based on throttle position and rpm. Thanks for the video, it helped me find my problem. I don't know much about your specific application, but the oil could be things like a bad valve guide seal, piston ring or piston issues or a head gasket. A leakdown test may tell you something. You could always check to see if there's any reason that the PCV system could cause more crankcase vented gases to make their way to #6. I would try to figure out that cylinder first and then see if the ping is still there and work on that.
Hey, it’s drawkward from your forum, many years ago. I didn’t know you had a TH-cam channel. You came up on top for detonation sound search, awesome job. Subscribed!
so what is the solution/repair for this. been having this sound on my 250cc 4 stroke. very typically on gear 1 and at 28km/h exactly. it doesn't sound anymore at higher speeds/gear.
Many potential issues could cause it. If specifically at one speed in one gear, I'd wonder if it really was spark knock. If it is, then I'd wonder about ignition advance at a specific RPM and throttle position, but I wouldn't think that should be so specific to only happen in one gear at one speed.
mate I've been scratching my head for a years, the symptom on my cbr150 just like yours I thought mine was worn out crankshaft bearing housing it turn out to be preignition, adjust timing & using petrol with correct octane solve the problem. thanks mate.
A bad setup could cause spark knock. High compression, large squish clearance, poor cylinder head design or maybe even flow throughout the cylinder. It could certainly cause poor running, but if it's backfiring and spark knocking I'd make sure it's not lean and running hot because of that.
Depends a lot on the situation. If it's a new build or new mods you'd look different places than an engine that has been fine and suddenly knocks. #1 in any case is always to be sure the fuel is good with a sufficient octane rating.
Using the wrong spark plug could also be the case, im using a BR8HS instead of B8HS plug (The R one has 5000 ohms resistance) on stock ignition. Which might be the cause for potential detonation in my engine...
@@epickinesisk1112 Is that the highest where you are? At 10,000km you should probably take a look at the owners or service manual and see what is recommended by then.
Easiest prevention is to use higher octane fuel. Beyond that, it's very application specific. Things like compression ratio, carbon buildup, ignition advance... It's possible to damage a whole lot of things. Anything from just peppering the ceramic of a spark plug to major internal engine damage.
not sure if this is the right place but if I have two identical taotao50s and one is much faster than the other where do I start to figure out what's causing the difference?
Knew i forgot something! Yeah check the CVT out like belt thickness and the weights of the rollers to make sure both are about the same. Should be able to find all this in your repair manual assuming its stock of course.
Pls help! I'm also experiencing this fuel / engine knock whenever I go full throttle I boosted the engine of my 110cc yamaha scooter and now experiencing this even though my gas is 95octane
If you're generating boost, you may need to lower compression, decrease boost or decrease ignition timing to alleviate knock... or use a higher octane fuel. Excessive heat, lean tunes and other things can make it worse.
@@gokulrajg3251 It's got a lot of load on it at lower RPM in the highest gears. With only 3000km, can you take it back to the dealer? That would be the best bet. Let them make sure all is well.
I just raised my compression today, and it turned out to be a bad idea. The 95 octane fuel can't handle it, so I'm switching back to my lower compression. Today I've heard what it sounds like. In 2-stroke engines atleast, it sounds like if there were small rocks rattling inside your engine, or as I've seen some other comments here saying it sounds like a geiger counter, which is exactly how it sounds. Mine did it consistently only when the engine was at it's operating temperature and in mid-high throttle. Though on long coasts (closing throttle at high speed and decelerating), the way the usual 2-stroke goes (pom-pom-pom-pom) at closed throttle, was sounding more metallic, very noticable actually.
If your timing is advanced, you may be able to back it off enough to get rid of the knock and keep the compression change. May not make much difference either way.
It's usually somewhere between what you hear in the video and more of a dull sound like if you could imagine marbles being in the engine. Sometimes they knock without any obvious performance symptoms.
Thanks! very thanks! I noticed that in my four strokes. ¾ throttle opening goes well, bike can do the job or load... but there is not difference on engine power between ¾ and full throttle but sound appears just like your. You say Poor octane much advance timing overheating In the practique, how can you deal with it? this video was in 2016! what have you learned all this time to adjust on engine that sounds like ping? very very thank to you and regards from south america.
A lot of it depends on what the engine is. Mods and such. If it's a stock engine, then the easy solution is usually to use higher octane fuel. If it's modified, then you have to think about what those modifications will affect and go from there. There isn't one right answer.
Happy New Year do you have any research on how to add a 2-stroke to a Honda Ruckus I have a 150 Ruckus already I want next built to be a 2-stroke thanks and keep making those great videos
It should be quite similar to how the 150 went in. A Minarelli/Jog engine may not require much fab work, since it's also a top mount. Here's a build thread on my forum from a guy that did that to his Ruckus : 49ccscoot.proboards.com/thread/110/ruckus-project
I remenber that sound coming from a 70cc witch I was tuning the Carburator and was a "little" to poor. Next time i hear was from a Tzr 125 witch the idle jet was to little for a new cylinder. You know it is bad when you hear it.
There are multiple possibilities dependent upon the exact situation and setup. #1 for me is always to try the easiest thing, which is switching to premium fuel if currently using regular or mid-grade lower octane choices. Retarding ignition timing and lowering compression are common possibilities. Sometimes, especially with two-strokes and air cooled stuff, enriching the tune may stop it or just making sure the engine cooling is sufficient.
@@49ccscoot i use 95 octane fuel its the best here Idk how to change the timing it's stock like always So i will try to move the needle clip 1 step up because i mived it down one time in past?

@@zizo0 The 44mm may be increasing compression too much if no other changes were made (like cylinder head, checking squish). Moving the clip down was likely a good call, as that will actually raise the clip and deliver more fuel. Taking fuel away is not going to fix this.
My 125 is only making a noise when accelerating in 3rd gear. It does sound similar to this but is it possible this could only happen in one gear range? 100% only when I accelerate in 3rd...
Number one is always to make sure you have adequate fuel octane. Consider any modifications that can alter compression and timing. Make sure the spark plug heat range is correct. Look for any cooling system issues.
@@49ccscoot yes we have some modification we used a little bigger piston. It is only air cooled... it runs smooth on plan but in mountanious area when the bike gets hot then it starts knocking and loses all power

@@rahimullahkhan164 If the head doesn't match up to the profile of the piston crown, the best way to solve this may be to recut the squish band and combustion chamber as needed. Try to make the squish area match the crown's angle. If you can get a good shape and maintain a tight squish clearance, with combustion chamber volume changes as needed for compression, then it should be a strong runner and a proper squish band helps to reduce detonation.

A bad setup could cause spark knock. High compression, large squish clearance, poor cylinder head design or maybe even flow throughout the cylinder. It could certainly cause poor running, but if it's backfiring and spark knocking I'd make sure it's not lean and running hot because of that.
How do you fix the rattling ? I have a bmw r nine t and it knocks like crazy
Depends a lot on the situation. If it's a new build or new mods you'd look different places than an engine that has been fine and suddenly knocks. #1 in any case is always to be sure the fuel is good with a sufficient octane rating.
Great job!
This guy. Thank you.
does this happen when reved on neutral or if theres no load on tires?
It's most common under load. I'd expect the problem to be very severe if happening in neutral or without the tires on the ground.
Is changing then spark plug can help?. We have the same problem. I've been using it 5-6 years.
Using the wrong spark plug could also be the case, im using a BR8HS instead of B8HS plug (The R one has 5000 ohms resistance) on stock ignition. Which might be the cause for potential detonation in my engine...
Spark plug heat range (too hot) is more commonly the cause.
I get this at around 8000 rpm on my TGB r50x moped, is there anything I can do?
Is it stock? The easiest thing to do is to use a higher octane gas if you are currently using regular and see if that does the trick.
90GTVert Yes it is completely stock, but I just bought it and it has run almost 10.000 km, and I am using 95 octane I think
@@epickinesisk1112 Is that the highest where you are? At 10,000km you should probably take a look at the owners or service manual and see what is recommended by then.
90GTVert yeah, we've only got 85, 95 and diesel
90GTVert dont have the manual tho, do you think i can buy one somewhere?
Is it very loud? Because mine just makes a tiny tiny rattle when i let off the throttle
It's noticeable, but not usually loud.
However, how to prevent the detonation/spark knock? And what possible to damage?
Easiest prevention is to use higher octane fuel. Beyond that, it's very application specific. Things like compression ratio, carbon buildup, ignition advance...
It's possible to damage a whole lot of things. Anything from just peppering the ceramic of a spark plug to major internal engine damage.
not sure if this is the right place but if I have two identical taotao50s and one is much faster than the other where do I start to figure out what's causing the difference?
jose joubert Maybe a compression test mate. I'd start there
Compression test,
New Fuel,
New Spark plug,
Valve clearance,
Air Filter,
Carburetor jetting/mixture.
MLG M8 gave good suggestions IMO, and I'd add checking the CVT.
Knew i forgot something!
Yeah check the CVT out like belt thickness and the weights of the rollers to make sure both are about the same.
Should be able to find all this in your repair manual assuming its stock of course.
thank you all...riding season is practically over up here north of Boston, MA but I know this will be my project come spring...thanks
@@49ccscoot thanks I've checked my sp and its color is rusty brown, I'll also try 95+ octane on gas stations, may scooter's from 110cc to 160cc
Very helpfull!! Thanks man!
What's solution for fuel knocking?
is it possible to detect knocking while in neutral gear position, and pull the throtle? i mean detect in what rpm
It may happen, but just because there is no knock in neutral does not mean there is none when under load. Not a terribly useful thing to do.
Test under load
I am hearing the exact same noise while accelerating my continental gt 650. Whats the fix for this issue
If it's stock, then #1 is to make sure you're using premium gas or whatever the owner's manual calls for and that the current fuel isn't old.
@@49ccscoot iam using a premium fuel and my bike has done only 3000 kms. Please help.iam hearing the sound mostly at 3 to 4000 rpm in 5 and 6 th gears
@@gokulrajg3251 It's got a lot of load on it at lower RPM in the highest gears. With only 3000km, can you take it back to the dealer? That would be the best bet. Let them make sure all is well.
@@49ccscoot I'll do the same thank you
I just raised my compression today, and it turned out to be a bad idea.
Does 450cc 4 stroke sound kinda similar if it knocks? Knocking will noticable ruin how smooth the rpm goes up am i right?
It's usually somewhere between what you hear in the video and more of a dull sound like if you could imagine marbles being in the engine. Sometimes they knock without any obvious performance symptoms.
Good video, safe driving to you
Thanks! very thanks!
I noticed that in my four strokes.
¾ throttle opening goes well, bike can do the job or load... but there is not difference on engine power between ¾ and full throttle but sound appears just like your.
You say
Poor octane
much advance timing
overheating
In the practique, how can you deal with it?
this video was in 2016! what have you learned all this time to adjust on engine that sounds like ping?
very very thank to you and regards from south america.
A lot of it depends on what the engine is. Mods and such. If it's a stock engine, then the easy solution is usually to use higher octane fuel. If it's modified, then you have to think about what those modifications will affect and go from there. There isn't one right answer.
My ktm 2 stroke has a lot of comp, theres a ticking sound , doesnt sound like a normal ping, like you would hear in a car. So hard to diagnose
Spark knock sounds like a loud Geiger counter. That's how I describe it.
You know it is bad when you hear it.
that's what I always called "bogging" but good to know that it's actually spark knock
How can i solve that?
There are multiple possibilities dependent upon the exact situation and setup. #1 for me is always to try the easiest thing, which is switching to premium fuel if currently using regular or mid-grade lower octane choices. Retarding ignition timing and lowering compression are common possibilities. Sometimes, especially with two-strokes and air cooled stuff, enriching the tune may stop it or just making sure the engine cooling is sufficient.
@@49ccscoot i use 95 octane fuel its the best here
Idk how to change the timing it's stock like always
So i will try to move the needle clip 1 step up because i mived it down one time in past?
@@zizo0 Sounds like a good start. If you haven't changed anything physically with the engine, then it's probably some sort of tuning/ignition issue.
@@49ccscoot the only changes is that my 49cc 40mm became 44mm and neeldle clip is 1 step down i will move it up and see its the only thing i can do
And my stator is weak maybe it can make the problem too?
@@zizo0 The 44mm may be increasing compression too much if no other changes were made (like cylinder head, checking squish). Moving the clip down was likely a good call, as that will actually raise the clip and deliver more fuel. Taking fuel away is not going to fix this.
My 125 is only making a noise when accelerating in 3rd gear. It does sound similar to this but is it possible this could only happen in one gear range? 100% only when I accelerate in 3rd...
Could just be under a lot of load there.
Does Carbon deposit cause Pre Ignition? Im having the same problem and its Barely 18k km running...
It's possible. Could be causing a hot spot.
My trail also have this problem... plz tell me how can i solve this issue?
Number one is always to make sure you have adequate fuel octane. Consider any modifications that can alter compression and timing. Make sure the spark plug heat range is correct. Look for any cooling system issues.
@@49ccscoot yes we have some modification we used a little bigger piston.
It is only air cooled... it runs smooth on plan but in mountanious area when the bike gets hot then it starts knocking and loses all power
@@rahimullahkhan164 See if it will take more fuel to help cool it. 4Ts are pretty forgiving, so you may be able to increase main jet size a little and lower CHT without seeing much difference in performance.
@@49ccscoot i have 2 stroke dt 100.. replace the piston with Rx115 becoz Rx piston is a bit bigger than Dt. The head of the piston of Dt is flate but Rx piston has a little hump on its head... so i think too much compression may be the issue.... thanx for ur video its extremely helpful 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
