    I think generic names for basic utilities is a right thing for user friendly distros. Most people won't need to launch anything from the terminal, and typing "files" when you need to look at your files is much more intuitive than typing "nemo" or "dolphin" for these purposes.

    • @paulg3336
      @paulg3336 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      In GNOME shell ,you have never needed to type the actual name of the application. Typing anything related to the application will show a set of suitable applications for the search term.
      i.e. Type "photo" and you will get GIMP, Shotwell, Document Scanner, Cheese etc. - depending on what you have installed.

      They could easily make it searchable by generic terms. Most distros that I've been on do that, and even Windows does it with certain things, especially Windows 11. But I do see your point. User friendly distros, and especially Ubuntu, are popular with people migrating from Windows and Mac, who are accustomed to generic names like "File Explorer". But I also don't think it's all together wrong for new users to learn Linux the Linux way with at least some things. If you're going to call Nautilus "Files", it is too much of a stretch to call it something like "Nautilus File Explorer" instead?
      I guess it really doesn't matter though. The new users who don't care to learn never will, and that's fine. And the users who do care to learn will find their way as they always have.

    Note you do not need to reinstall ubuntu and lose settings to get this version. You can tell it to do an update - which works very well. Go to software and updates - click on the updates tab. It's the drop down option right at the bottom. Then when you check for updates you will get an option to update to this version. It keeps all your settings and apps. It also took much less time than it said it would on my system which is not the fastest. Very pleased with it. Fixed a couple of annoying bugs I had on the LTS - and the whole PC runs a little faster! When prompted I selected the "remove" unused files/apps option - and also when prompted later in the install - I selected for it to keep my previous config files. Easy and it worked seamlessly. Very impressed!

    Adaptive or responsive design is actually exactly the same what web-devs do for their frontend. While it was unneeded 20 years ago, now most people use laptops with touchpads or even touchscreens, not even saying about mobile phones. Besides screens get larger and larger with higher and higher pixel density, there also screens with wacky dimensions, geometry and generally they are very different. I was sort of pissed about desktops becoming more "mobile" for no reason, but if you think about it GNOME was going in the right direction long time ago, at least in terms of being right for most average users.

      The GUI system monitor is not the same program for each desktop environment. So it's not a good comparison between one desktop and the next. For consistency, I try to stick to htop. Also, htop can be run in a tty is needed, where the GUI cannot. That's important when your graphical environment has crashed.

    Using generic name isn't an Ubuntu thing, it's a GNOME thing. Basically, all programs that joined the GNOME project officially have to change their name to generic names at some point; and new GNOME projects aren't going to have these internal codenames.
    That's why Firefox and LibreOffice have their branded names, but Nautilus and Totem don't. The former two aren't part of GNOME project, as the GNOME's web browser project is the GNOME Web, a.k.a. Epiphany. Canonical replaced Epiphany with Firefox in their Ubuntu distro, and they added LibreOffice as the GNOME project doesn't really have a first party office suite.
    The use of generic names is actually quite appropriate for GNOME, because from GNOME's perspective these are "first party" software. They actually standardized this use of generic name across all GNOME desktops. In other words, their former names are really only provided as backward compatible aliases.
    As to your point about starting programs from the terminal, these have actually been renamed too. As part of the GNOME experience, you're actually supposed to use the name "gnome-text-editor", etc instead of "gedit" from the terminal. GNOME users don't have to know the internal project codenames, "gedit", "totem", etc these names in the terminal have only been provided for backwards compatibility purpose. In other words, unlike what you've said "Totem" is no longer the real name of this program; they're now just a former name.
    (Of course, us old time terminal users are used to the branded name, and they're shorter to type as well, so they're easier to use in the terminal; and sometimes like in the case of Totem, you're seeing things in the middle of transition, as its executable name hasn't been renamed yet).
    I think this use of generic names are actually quite sensible. Just as basic system utilities like `ls` have generic names because they standard utilities, we don't call them `coreutils-ls` or `bsd-ls` or `busybox-ls`. It's just `ls`. There's no reason the same reasoning didn't apply to GUI applications.

      @yvrelna ปีที่แล้ว +1

      TL;DR you're actually doing users disservice to keep calling these projects by their former names

    Snaps took a long time but they are decent now, I use snap Firefox and it's pretty fast, have no complaints, also, other snap apps run pretty well, too, overall I prefer this new method of shipping apps flatpaks/snaps, no dependency issues, it all just works, and they are frequently updated, at least software I use, don't need to add any additional ppas.

    Kudu is pronounced with short sharp sounds, rather than the drawn out koo-doo sound. The short and sharp name pairs well with kinetic to convey something punchy and alive.

    SNAPs suck no matter how you slice it. The REAL reason for the hate is because of how SLOW they are. Most of us REAL people don't have Threadrippers as a computer. Not interested in making my computer feel like it's from 1995 instead of the era it was made from. But please go on and tell us about how fast your Threadripper is again.

    The reason vim and htop are not installed by default is that top and nano are, I think they endorse these programs, I have myself real problems to learn how to use vim on terminal, on the other side nano was very easy to learn. The new installation wizard based on flutter is already up in the daily Ubuntu image in case any of you want to give a try. One more exciting feature is the new snap store also based on Flutter, you can install by choosing the beta or alfa channel you can check the commands on the Ubuntu blog.
