- Michael is seeking 40,000 for 10% for his company Van Guardian. A tool to deter criminals from breaking into vans.
Season 20, Episode 5.
An international sensation, Dragon's Den features entrepreneurs pitching for investment in the Den from our Dragons, five venture capitalists willing to invest their own money in exchange for equity.

Peter really doesn't understand, breaking into a van causes massive damage before the alarm goes off and this will deter the casual burglar and get them to move on.
How many of these have you bought? Or anyone you know? They are out there?
Have a simillar product, for me and my family, also you can controll it from a remote, if you want to turn it off or on, such a great thing to have.
Obviously you don't think Peter is right when he's 100% right.
What credentials does Peter Jones have in the security industry? None, he has no idea what he's talking about.@@joewas2225
@@joewas2225 except he isn't....
The guy pitching is absolutely right, detecting a break-in before it occurs makes a huge difference - once someone is in, even if the alarm is triggered, they'll just grab what they can and make off. If I were him, I'd be approaching the insurance companies to see if they were interested in partnering somehow.
I can just picture you sitting in the waiting room of an insurance executive all day wearing your dad's suit, til the receptionist eventually tells you he can't make it today
@@MF_JONESWell the insurance executive would be foolish to ignore this opportunity to really improve the van's security. It's a game-changer, theoretically. 🤔👍✌️
I like your idea. What can insurers do with this, though?
Agreed. Once somones in, what’s the point of stopping? You’ve already committed the crime. Stop them getting in in the first place and the chance of them leaving the van is much greater.
@@ceterisparibus8966offering discounts if having it installed
I don’t usually leave comments on TH-cam but I brought these for my new van around a month ago and they work great, my van doesn’t have a factory fitted alarm and van crime is a big problem where I live.
They only took 20 minutes to fit and now the whole back of my van is protected.
And the side? I've seem door peeling onnthe side door
Have you considered leaving liverpool?
the problem for you is thieves will now leave the back of the van intact, and the rest of the van will be gone.
@@Professional_TH-cam_Commenter : You REALLY need to leave Liverpool.

well said. we all know someone who's van was broken into by low-lifes. this looks like a good effective deterrent so the dragons should have supported him.
This is the only time I’ve watched of these and thought “brilliant product” but it’s crazy none of the dragons can see it!
He could not answer a straight question.
It was almost unwatchable
We drive twin can high spec transit customs and VW transporters at my work and we are being forced to have these on our vans. The alarm is about a 3rd of the volume of the standard alarm and all this does is advertised that I have tools worth stealing in my van. Terrible product.
@@Dadaadad268he’s an electrician he’s never had a business conversation like this before. He knew he was inexperienced and he was trying to overcompensate. Totally wrong profile of investor for him and his product, but again he doesn’t know enough about business to even consider that. He needs a mate or family member to give him some coaching because this is a really good product
I think this is a great product tbh; can imagine most work vans getting one installed
It wasn’t Michael’s failure to explain his ‘IP or Patent’ to Tuker, rather Contrary, it was Tuker being ‘thick’ to understand when Michael explained 3x !!
A dragons ability to imply your stupidity because they can’t understand? Really you would wonder how they have succeeded?

I have to agree. I even understood what’s going on in the first time.
He should've explained how this is like having timed lights, fake cameras, or a bike lock, but for van theft. A cheap, but very effective deterrent that keeps all but the most determined thieves away
Agreed! Most thieves are on the fence or first time offenders. They are opportunists. It will never stop desperate people but will ABSOLUTELY give people a second thought about breaking into a car
Another fine example of the Dragons being uneducated but thinking they know everything...
They know everything. About rich people life
Not enough thieves around when they were young.
People knock on the window for direction and then grab whatever they can from either the front seat (hand bags) or even the glove box - while you are at a red light.
You can't get out and you can't drive off.
it is a telly show......
Well its their money and their opinions so even if they are wrong, its their loss if it hits big.
Unfortunately a lot of people think wealth = knowledge.
DeWalt have installed these VanGuardian alarms on their bright yellow trade vans and it's already prevented the break in of several vans at the Sandown Park Toolfair when they were targeted by criminals. Good luck to Mike. 👍🤩
I know nothing about owning a van and I know nothing about being an investor, but even I can see the massive difference between a van alarm going off before and after a break-in. I'm sure it was the guy's very indirect manner of communication that blew this for him in the end, not the product, because this is genuinely a really good idea for vehicle security and I'm sure Debora would've made him a deal if he had been more direct with his answers.
The other girl said this is a product she would buy for her vans but she can’t see it being able to make enough profit to make them money
Remember brewdog also got turned down by the dragons and they are now huge
You can't work with someone who can't give a straight answer to a simple question
The Dragons be like “if you don’t want your stuff to get stolen, don’t have stuff then?”
Legend 😂
Definitely a great idea. I reckon a thief would leave instantly if the alarm went off on touch. If those door don't come open thousands of pounds would be saved in tools
My dads a builder and I would love for him to of been there to have a word with these dragons. The damage they do to these vans is very expensive and the theives often know how to not set the alarm off.
And yet, even if the alarm is set off it's too late! They're in! They'll just grab what they can. Tools are never cheap and often a builders best tools aren't easy to replace.
Honestly, their lack of understanding is baffling. Tthis setting off just by any touch can be enough for the sods to run off (and sadly try a van that is a easier target)
Really think this is a great product.
Forget about the pitch......
How did they bring that van up those stairs 😮
Stairs? It's a ground-floor studio.
Maby they got the fake lift to work
They remove the roof of the Warehouse and a helicopter drops it in
Hidden under Deborah’s turkey neck

Why were they acting like he was talking another language? it was really easy to understand what his patent was for and why his alarm system was better than ones that go off after the doors are opened 😂
He was waffling on instead of just answering the questions asked.
@@BenjaminGoose he definitely wasn't
@@BenjaminGooseNo he wasn’t waffling he was explaining very clearly. The dragons were impatient and rude.
@@BenjaminGoose He answered 3 times. Touka didn't understand. Not sure why, I thought it was easy to grasp.

tbf i think this was the most successful pitch in which all dragons went out. All of them said they understand why the product exists and why it will sell, but that it's not investible.
I know loads of people who have had vans stolen, this looks a great product to me. Touch the van and it goes off, nobody going to try and break in once that goes off
I’m from Leeds and I’ve just had my transit drilled. Nothing stolen thankfully . You see so many vans now with plates on the doors were they have been drilled
Tool theft is out of control in England. Crime isn't being dealt with.
@@RossKempOnYourMum01 is like the police don’t even exist at the moment . I know a few people who’ve had their house broke into or car stolen and the police haven’t even come out they were just given a crime reference number.
What a lovely bloke, I think they were a bit harsh on him here
I felt the same about them but Sarah and Steven were ok, they don't know what it's like to lose your livelihood 💯
There are creators and there are investors, not everyone can be both, sometimes you need to guide a great creator and have big rewards! Dragons you just missed a big oportunity of something that can be great.
Our whole fleet of vans use these now. The fact that the dragons couldn't understand why the alarm going off BEFORE the burglars get inside the van was so important, shows that they weren't the right people anyway.
The dragons need to bring their asses to America and see from his POV. Brilliant product. It would be great for vans here in America especially for businesses like Amazon etc.
Is this guy from America? We already have like 6 similar products on Amazon for under $50
@@GuessTheSongMSyes, can't you tell from his accent 😂
I’ve fitted a sensor connected to an alarm to my pick truck up after a break in. It works like this one. Only cost me £18. Works great.
Its annoying that all the dragons bowed out. He was really clear when explaining his patent. He should have corrected Touker when he kept asking about the patent. He answered him several times. Surprised that none of the dragons noticed
How did they not see what a brilliant idea this is? Huge huge difference between waiting for the thief to get access already then start the whole securing process, and between you being notified literally before they even start working on unlocking your van !
I think this demonstrates how out of touch the dragons are with all their money. A lot of people are tradespeople with a van. Many of those vans are much older and in need of better security than is built in. Not just but also people with campers etc would benefit from this.
I also think that the way he was talking was reminiscent of someone with ADHD, in which case it's pretty unfair that the dragons don't consider it's just the situation which is sending him off track a bit.
All that said! I'm not entirely convinced by this execution. I have an old vw bus with no alarm and thought 'oh yeah great' until I saw it was stuck on the outside with adhesive. The more effective alarm system would be on the inside where it can't be nabbed, I also don't like the idea of glueing things onto my vehicle
I was thinking the same, if it’s adhered to the metal of the van and it sets off an alarm by touch, how would it differ from being inside away from eyes ?
Dragons lost , Mike’s gain , I have this vanguarian alarms and I cannot express how important to have these fitted , I wish Mike all the success he deserves
Agreed that this is an underrated product by the Dragons standards who would never use such a product because they are too rich! Confused why Touker was so confused when he explained what the patent was. They seemed to ask too many questions.
Car alarms that go off when touched or even coming near it were on the market in 80s and 90s and they stopped making a lot of them because they didnt protect cars they just annoy people when they go off on accident
Debra at 11:36 "My problem is that you can't tell us really straight and simple questions without chucking words out there" she means "answers" not "questions". Ironic. 😅😂
Not massively ironic there champ. More Allanis Morissette irony
This would be a great investment for gigging bands and musicians too. Hear so many stories of bands having their vans broken into and their livelihood taken away.
The quote in the title is wrong. He didn't say "I don't want to invest in your side project". He said "I don't know if I want to invest in your side project". Clickbait much?
I understood what he meant about the IP straight away.
"It's a side project"
"I don't want to invest in your side project"
"Its not a side project"
_Now, Deborah “Juggz” Meaden wants to drill down into the details of the business_
To deter the thieves it might be a good solution to install a flow system that goes away from the van stopping the crime in its tracks.
I just purchased a 2 alarm bundle from Van Gaurdian, very quick and easy to fit and they work a treat. Great product Michael, I hope you sell loads of these great alarms.
This product is amazing! I've got friends in the trade that have had their vans broken into numerous times. At hotels, on the worksite, at home. Something like this is genius and will save so many tools from being taken.
"Can't tell me questions" continues to criticise his ability to speak accurately when she's not making sense herself
Great idea for someone in the trade
I'm sure this can be adapted for a normal family car. I think he is onto a good thing personally. Shame he doesn't have any backing to help him on his way.

The floor is creaking with the van on it but saying the egos in here are far heavier
I think the product is very clever is it life changing? no however it’s better than existing products
Peter “I was unable to embarrass you on live TV so for that reason I am out” 😂
The answer is better built vans with built in security
I want to know how the van fit inside the elevator
Peter really doesn't get it and is probably making soo much money he doesn't care or even hear about how much he's losing from his vans so fair enough. But its the same reason people leave a downstairs light on or have a security automatic floodlight... they do work. They don't stop 100% of break ins... they are a deterrent. There was a study that airport security has an absolutely terrible record when tested. Its just for show and yet it still works and is a deterrent, even though physically it doesn't stop anything, mentally it does.
Peter doesnt seem to understand that no one really pays attention to car alarms that much anymore.
How did the van fit in the lift and how do I invest in the technology involved?
peter trying to say that it wont help is silly I had someone and steel from my van and once the door is open they just throw everything in the back of their car those extra seconds or minutes are massive for you to come to the defence of your property
Guy is right about damage being extensive before theft, but a hockey puck that can be torn off and thrown is a bit useless. If it’s inside the van, it’ll be muffled too much.
In Argentina this would be highly demanded. It's a brilliant idea!
There are two inexpensive bicycle alarm systems installed in one housing
Not show how they got a patent of a moulded panel that moulds onto a van panel where the van manufacturer had a patent for
I think the dragons missed out here. He just struggled to talk and sell his solution clearly.
The key is in the quality of it. If it's good then at £150 it's a bargain and will sell well. If it's got loads of false alarms etc or it doesn't last very long etc etc then it'l go on the heap with the rest of them.
What a great product! I will look into this and see if I can fit it on my garage doors. 👍🏻
Gobsmacked thought Sarah or Deborah would have invested -just needs the door opening -great bloke 😢😢😢😢
Peter is talking about his fleet of vans, that's a very different story to a self employed plumber who carries their livelihood in their van.
Got them on my van and it’s brilliant
Perhaps the alarm should be fitted inside the van door instead on outside more secure...
Brilliant idea
I’ve got them - they are great!
I wonder how he fitted the van in the lift...

Sometimes the damage to the van from scumbags breaking in, costs more to fix them replacing the tools , I think it's a great product , the dragons clearly out of touch on this .
His alarm company is still operating in May 2024.
It seems great. However, there is a limitation on market size, in my opinion. The problem is that if the market's security level is high, it is useless. On the other hand, if the market's security level is too low, it is also useless; whatever the alarm sounds, thieves can ignore it. (For example, flash mob robbery in the US) Nevertheless, when I tried to find these types of products in Australia(possible market) for my future campervan plan, I could not find enough information on the internet about them. Which means they did not try enough to sell their products globally. One of their problems is the branding. There is another corporation named Vanguardian, which is an IT service in Australia, and a logistics corporation in the US, etc. How could you sell your product in both possible markets for your product with that brand name? He developed what some people needed but did not have access to them.
All a person needs to do is get some vinyl lettering from a sign writer's
All the sign has to say is
Van Watch
Which is a visual deterrent
And if enough Van owners put a sign on their Van saying
Van Watch
Every Van owner will be part of a van watch scheme
Dragons missed out on this one.
What a great product I really hope he’s sold loads
Great product but I agree with Deborah, he needs to hire a CEO quick so that he doesn't waste time with waffling to simple straight forwards questions.
It's a damn good idea. Unfortunately...he didn't do a great job of explaining why it's a damn good idea. There's a couple of details there that need to be described the right way...and he's a tradesperson...not a salesman. That's too bad. The dragons should have made more of an effort to understand the product, and the potential.
I love dragons den
Really surprised this didn't have an investment. Great idea
Could it be used on a peddle bike ?
A simpler knock sensor siren installed under the bonnet powered by the vehicle battery, and cannot be ripped off.
100%
Why not make the whole van out of the part that cannot be ripped off? No battery or sensors needed.
Think I'm the only person that understands and agrees with the Dragons on this one. He overcomplicated answers to simple questions and this came across like he was not confident about it. The product is great and the Dragons could understand that but the patent was only for the Base of the unit. I think the Dragons understood that likely wouldn't stop someone creating a competing product. Also the Dragons not investing doesn't mean they don't understand how bad having your van broken into is. At the end of the day the Dragons are looking for businesses that will turn their £45k into millions. They couldn't see that with this product. They all agree he will sell some and it is a good product but it's unlikely to be a product that will have a 10x return like they are looking for. I'm sure this exposure was great for him though and increased his sales so I'm sure going in the Den was a great move for him.
Great product. A slightly better pitch may have got 5 offers
i want one. what a great product
The dragons are clearly all tired, most likely this is the final pitch at the end of a long filming session.
its junk a screwdriver at the back and it will pop straight off

Peter tries to break his alarm, then when he cant he goes back to his seat, looked like a sabotage intent to me.
You have to be able to sell your product no matter how good it is.
He is clearly a good engineer, but a terrible salesman.
He should have bought someone with him who could have explained it.
400,000 volts would be more effective.
Very good idea, the Drags didn't really seem to get the concept.
This is a great invention. I know people who have had this happen to them and their entire means of making a living is gone instantly which is invaluable, and a few grand's worth of tools with it.
The Dragons don't live in the real world ...
They did not do there homework!
I really hope he does well! 💪🏻
Isn't the alarm going to do body work damage with that glue? looks like it could rip paint work off if you try to remove it.
What would rather all your tools missing or some paint come off if you decide to remove it?
@@valtros2k10 I don't know, I like the invention but the glue part, must be a better way of installing it, like a clip that goes inside the door or something.
Fit a decent alarm/immobiliser with a proximity sensor that would be a lot better than just a stuck on box imho
He’s made this point, his product can be self applied, and is considerably cheaper
