    Moldvay Basic (BX) page B61:
    PLAYING SURFACE: Combats are easy to keep track of when
    large sheets of graph paper, covered with plexiglass or transparent
    adhesive plastic (contact paper), are used to put the figures on. The
    best sheets for this use have 1" squares, and the scale of 1" = 5'
    should be used when moving the figures. With water-based
    markers or grease pencils, an entire room or battle can be drawn in
    just a few seconds. When the battle is over, the board may be
    wiped off, leaving it ready for the next combat.

    5e measures everything in feet. 1e measures movement in feet within confined spaces such as dungeons. However its measured in yards outdoors. If the base movement of a human is 12 feet in a dungeon, then it is 36 feet outdoors.
    In 5e the range of a longbow is up to 150 feet indoors, or outside. 1e the range is 70 feet indoors, and 210 feet outside. 5e uses a disadvantage attack rolls for maximum range of 600 feet. Meanwhile, 1e uses a -5 to attack roll modifier. When firing to hit a a target from a maxium range of 210 feet indoors, or 630 feet outside.

    Nothing wrong with House Rules. It's what makes the D&D world go round.

  • @Parker8752
    @Parker8752 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    It's always worth remembering that AD&D was intended to be played as an open table style of game, with more players playing the campaign as a whole than can necessarily sit at the table in any one session, with multiple parties in the same world potentially adventuring in the same places at different times. It was expected that most players would eventually have two or three active characters, so while one was spending time training for a new level or healing from injuries sustained in the last adventure (or even just out of play until other characters catch up with them chronologically), another could be played.
    Of course, how a game is played and how it's intended to be played are different things.

    • @Classic_DM
      @Classic_DM  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      AD&D changed everything, despite some of its goofy numbers for movement and combat time.

  • @doctorlolchicken7478
    @doctorlolchicken7478 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    The AD&D advice is great, the house rules not so much.
    “Spells are really powerful in AD&D”
    “Assume everyone (including magic users) have max hp. “
    “Make all spells require 1 round to cast (except the ones that take turns)”
    In other words, take the system where the biggest flaw is how powerful magic users are compared to everyone else and make them even more powerful.

    • @Classic_DM
      @Classic_DM  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Magic Users are powerful but only when they have spells they can cast that express that power, in my opinion.
      Many times, the MU is relied on for utility spells and damage output, but thus is very limited even at level 10+. This means a MU's first instinct is to not cast and hold back until casting turns the tide of the battle. Spell recovery is quite long for all casters which is probably why every subsequent edition fiddled with this.
      Lsstly, like the monk, 1d4 H.P. per level, often with no CON bonus, bad AC, useless martial abilities (darts, daggers, staves, can't land a hit etc) makes MU/ILL feel like a black powder musketeer on the battlefield surrounded by Vikings, Knights, or Apachees.
      Imagine being level 14 in the Vault of the Drow and your H.P. on average is 20.
      Even so, AD&D is perhaps the most creative, content robust, original, and magical game system ever created that changed everything.
      Thanks for watching and I'd love to hear your thoughts on the Classic Traveller videos and the 4E Design and Features video too!

    The hardest part of getting new players to play 1st edition AD&D, is getting them to realize "this is the game" (show them the 3 books), and make them understand, they only need the PHB. And there won't be any other books (for the players). Not many races, not many classes but most importantly 1st level is very dangerous. They likely will die before 2nd level. Only the skilled gamer makes it to 3rd level. There is no mercy in real AD&D. Protect your magic user, do as your cleric tells you, and make sure the fighter gets the best weapons and armour.

    The mean value for the ability score checks appear to be wrong. Rolling 3d6 has a mean value of 10.5, not 7.5, the same as for a single d20. 4d6 has a mean value of 14, while 5d6 has 17.5.
    I would rather go with 2d6 (7) for easy, 3d6 (10.5) for simple, 4d6 (14) for difficult, and 5d6 (17.5) for extremely difficult. Just remember that the chances are all on a bell curve, that is most rolls will fall at or near the average value.

    Great video .
    I dropped 5e because the setting material felt pretty weak. Paizo is generally better, but PF2e feels too much like playing a card game with all the abilities and features that classes get.
    I generally don’t like rules that codify with special abilities and actions what players should just be able to say they do. It creates lazy players, and at that point I’d rather just play a video game.
    I struggled a bit starting with OSRIC as the layout felt a bit weird and there’s some general ambiguity built into 1e.

    I think you are bringing a lot of stuff that takes the fun out of AD&D, by using a lot of new rules from 5e. 1e/2e are so much different than 5e, if you start bringing a lot of rules from 5e into the original AD&D, you are really taking away the joy of the older games. Just not a fan of the later editions. I started with 1e, and we brought some things in from 2e, but mostly kept the basis of 1e in one campaign and used mostly 2e in a second campaign. The uniqueness of 1e/2e is really, really destroyed by just one or two 5e rules. I hate to hear is someone is killing the old time game.

      Also, I think it's strange that you talk about tactics and strategy near the end (running instead of fighting or, as we used to do... PARLEY!), but the first house rule is max hit points. We had max hp at 1st and 2nd level. After that you rolled and lived with what you got. That created MORE, not less, strategic decisions and made it that much more fun.
      For initiative, we always rolled a d20.
      Critical hit and flub were in our campaigns also.
      Finally, we had a temple we could go to for raising the dead. The cost was staggering and often required the individual to be in DEEP debt and/or do something ridiculously difficult for the church IMMEDIATELY. It was like casting a wish spell. Anything could happen, and usually did. So it wasn't something we did often unless someone was VERY tied to their character or their character was a major plot motivator/mover. One time a player had to change sex (from a she to a he), another time a player had to change class and become a cleric of the God, and once a fighter was only allowed to use hammers as weapons (by being raised by a cleric of Thor). Lots of interesting stuff, lots of interactions with the Gods themselves, being given choices of life or whatever. Fun times.

      I don't even play 5e.
      I think changing the melee round to 6 sec (from 60 seconds) and adjusting the movement rate to match makes the moment-to-moment combat more engaging.
      Everything else stays the same.
