17:24 What a bunch of pretty girls. I can't help wondering what became of them. I just hope they got through the war all right and lived long, happy lives.
This influenced me so much. It takes me out on many rainy nights and tells me to just walk alone with an umbrella on some dark streets with a lot of trees.
Come to think of it, rainy early morning walk is great, especially somewhere with a lot of water and mist. But in my city there's only lights reflected in puddles at night, which is also nice.
in the mountains of Vietnam I walked through clouds and the mist was like a fine spray of haze that was not only intoxicating but brought fear within as you cannot see for a few seconds and you can easily fall off the winding road but the fear is only a few seconds as you feel the softness of the rain while the clouds slip by like wafts of white smoke it is then that the rain starts splashing and the clouds are gone and you feel the sky is breaking under the pouring rain ... then the sunshine breaks through and it is all calm once again.
EHH? I'm Vietnamese. I know your fear. Take your eyes away for a moment to look at the valley and in the opposite direction, some containers or trucks will come out of the mist with blaring yellow eyes. Walking is nice, riding a motorbike like me is scary af. Everytime I go there I just want to ride on the most horrible dirty rocky roads cuz there's no big traffic.
oh you from Viet? I was speaking about Sapa and the land of the dancing clouds I only mentioned fear for a few seconds as everything vanishes in the clouds and you are neither here or neither there.. lol
This is another wounderful movie as very interesting with good story as many of Japanese pre-WWII movies had very interesting stories and actors and actresses were well respresented.
20:48 - This scene is one of the strangest and most erotic in 1930s Japanese cinema. The beautiful Mieko Takamine (who was only about 19 at the time) portrays a character who is playing "hide and seek" with the blind hero. But he can *smell* her and knows she's there, even though she refuses to speak or even acknowledge her presence. The use of subjective camera (ironically involving a character who can't see) and the general air of ambiguity is fascinating.
erotic ? i think that is the wrong word, I would say romantic or sensual. The movie is well directed although the blind men antics at times flirt with annoying unrealistic level like kabuki theater where abstract exaggeration is expected but not here. This lighthearted humor counterbalances the darker themes of this movie ingeniously and paints a picture of strangers getting to know each other while travelling. We never know what the man with the adopted boy troubles are, and we barely get to know the beautiful Mieko Takamine shady situation. But all this feels all too familiar, unfinished issues, cruel life (if you think about the blind man unrequited love for the hopelessly beautiful tokyo lady, she never even gets a name), things not happening (the tokyo man clearly not finding a way into the lady's heart, gives up), and at the end nothing is resolved. This is very realistic even if the blind men antics aren't. I am not sure i understood the last scene, are those policemen escorting her or is she simply travelling to the next city. There is a lot of saddness, tenderness, in this movie, also resignation and escape through light comedy.
Thank you very much for the movies you have uploaded. I have really enjoyed them. Please try to find some of Tamizo Ishikawa's films. Please take care of yourself.
The english subtitles are totally out of sync. But it's really hard to tell exactly for how many seconds... I couldn't even tell if they come too early or too late...
A truly beautiful and touching film. 12 yrs have past, but thank you for making it available to all of us.
I mean how? How can this be so beautiful and moving and with such understated performances and be from 1938.
I would not ask that question of any Japanese movie made in the 1930s. I'd be asking that question if the movie had been made in the last 10 years.
this is a very beautiful film. if only all restorations of 1930s Japanese films were this crisp.

Magnificent movie considering the era....
All the Japanese movies are wonderful.. whether its black and white..or colourful..its always with full of emotions..😍
British movies are better..
I like the natural scenes shown in the film. Besides, people spoke more meaningfully then. They were sincere when they communicated with each other.

Mieko Takamine was uncredited in this movie. She should've been given top billing!
And if you think she's beautiful, you should hear her sing.

Interesting movie! The boy I'll admit was pretty annoying!
it's not his youth, this is a typical Japanese boy behavior. Abrupt and direct but also dilligent.
Interesting that only the blind can be masseurs
Touchy but no looky
Others could be, but the blind excelled at it for obvious reasons. That and the fact that the career offered them gainful employment.
