  • This player was acquired by me as part of a collection that belonged to Gunter John, the Head of Mastering at RCA's Rockville Road factory. It was open and appeared to be new in the box. After a full service it roared to life. It looks and operates fantastic. It has everything that would have came with it new from the factory. It is a SKT400, the last player that RCA produced. This specific player was built Monday January 9th 1984. It was most likely purchased by Gunter from the RCA Family Store, where employees could purchase RCA items at a discounted employee price.

With no skipping it is possible that was a demo only model of the player. They were produced with a heavier stylus pressure against the disc. This made them play really well but had the disadvantage of wearing out the discs quickly. I worked in a video store in the early to mid 80's and we had a demo model of this player, 10 plays was about the most you could get from the disc without degradation of audio and video quality.

Hello Kenneth, this player doesn't skip because it is fully serviced with a new stylus and a disc in good condition. If properly cared for the player and disc will produce flawless playback. The demonstration model you speak of is the SJT101. Please watch my other videos on how to service and maintain the players. Thanks.

Can one pump the players AV through a receiver? I'm curious as to your assessment of the sound quality. It being uncompressed on vinyl, I imagine it sounds great if the dolby stereo discs can be decoded via Prologic.

Good clean discs don't skip. Skipping is caused by either the silicone that is coated on the disc to protect it from the stylus has settled in the grooves and the stylus has to push it back out, usually this clears up after a play or two, or the disc was stacked and the grooves got crushed, there is no fix for this.

If you have good discs it won’t skip. The tricky part is getting good discs. Even then sometimes it helps to pre-play them.

Did CED have letterbox, or were they all pan and scan?

99% sure that they are all presented in 4:3 aspect ratio. I’ve never watched one that was letterboxed.
